A Glimpse of 2007
A Glimpse at 2007 When Microsoft Executive Robbie Bach assessed the final output of games in 2006, with a slimmer than expected first-party list, he had both eyes aimed at the console battleground of 2007. It's clear now that Microsoft's one-year start flummoxed Sony far more than anyone, perhaps even Sony, would like to admit. But if the launch year is one that permits a console manufacturer to settle down and do business, then 2007 is the first real year of the three-way console battle between Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony.
If you read our Fall 2007: Where's the Beef?" editorial, then you'll know we felt that Microsoft copped out on its fall launch (delaying a handful of games) and tried to pitch its ineptitude as a plus for 2007. "Hey, we're late. But it's OK! That's better for us in 2007!" (Wink!) While Forza 2, Too Human and Crackdown were indeed delayed, the reality is their arrival in 2007 will be better in the long run, whether by mistake or by design. Why? Most first year consoles experience a lull in game production after launch. They shove as many games as possible into the launch window and then exhale; usually leaving Q1 and Q2 empty. It happened to Microsoft in early winter 2006. But it won't happen for Microsoft in spring 2007. Those three games, plus Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, followed by the arrival of BioShock, the Half-Life 2 bundle, Eternal Sonata, Guitar Hero II, Medal of Honor Airborne and Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 in the spring, and Virtua Fighter 5 in the summer, capped off by the hopeful arrival of Mass Effect in later summer, will give every single on-the-fence gamer reason to buy an Xbox 360.
Isn't that enough? In any normal year, it would be. But we're entering into the beginning of the third year of production for Xbox 360 games (developers started Xbox 360 games in early 2005). Developers know the system better than before; they're no longer confused by the triple-core processors. The console has sold well, and will most likely hit the projected 10 million unit mark by January 2007 (worldwide). Publishers are taking note, and they're happy about it. Microsoft has challenged Sony on every level and, at least for the moment, has taken the market share lead in the next-gen console race. Exclusives that were once mainstay titles on Sony's platform are no longer. Grand Theft Auto IV will ship day and date on Xbox 360 and PS3. Assassin's Creed will ship on both systems, too. SEGA's Virtua Fighter 5 will now ship to Xbox 360, and even though it's late, Guitar Hero II will hit the console in spring 2007.
It's enough to turn American and European publishers around. For the most part, U.S. and Euro companies have been on board Microsoft's plan. But to turn Japanese publishers into Microsoft believers? Ha ha! We're kidding you, right? We've been drinking too much Christmas grog! Too much mulled wine. Too much damned Microsoft Kool-Aid. Right?
Nope.
We're as sober as the Pope. Watch and see how other Japanese publishers react. Mark our words here: Other publishers, other big-name Japanese publishers aside from Capcom (how we love thee, Capcom), will begin putting their once Sony exclusives on Xbox 360. And, in some cases, they'll put them on Xbox 360 first. Don't believe us? Watch for Namco and Konami in 2007. We're still not certain whether Metal Gear Solid 4 will hit Xbox 360, but if numbers (of units sold) do the talking, count on its arrival to Xbox 360 sometime after the PS3 version. What about Namco? We're sworn to secrecy, but the tide is changing here too. Prepare for some real Namco hardcore gaming love in 2007. Overall, Sony has reacted with alarm, anger, confusion, and is now realizing it must deal with this new situation: It isn't the console leader anymore. Oh yeah, almost forgot. Then there are Mistwalker's Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey, two highly anticipated Japanese RPGS exclusive to the console. And, oh yes, did somebody say something about Resident Evil 5?
There is so much more to talk about. LucasArts will eventually join in to the next-gen race, hopefully giving us Indiana Jones, that neato E3 Pre-Vis game and, please oh please, LucasArts! Where is Knights of the Old Republic III? Even if KoToR III isn't due in 2007, BioWare's very own Mass Effect itself is a big enough reason, all on its own, to buy an Xbox 360. Heck if we know when it will arrive, but it will be an awesome, must-have Xbox 360 game. Then there is BioShock. You know, the Irrational-developed first-person shooter that was IGN's best of E3 game? You had better believe that's going to scare your sox, your boxers, and your stupid goatee right off. And then who knows what Grand Theft Auto IV will be like. Will it be 10 times bigger than GTA: San Andreas? Will it be online? Will it smoke the fun/copycat Saints Row out of the water? However you figure it, Rockstar Games' next GTA iteration will be massive. Massive.
Finally, above all else, there is El Rey, le roi, de koning, der König, the king -- Halo 3. If Halo 2 was the best and fasted selling console game in history, you'd better keep your eye on Bungie's Halo 3. That will be the game to talk, gossip, speculate, and argue about for the entirety of 2006. Expect that to rule the month and the quarter, perhaps even the year whenever it ships (our guess is October or November 2007).
No matter how you slice or dice the year 2007 up, Microsoft's Xbox 360 will have more than just a little sumthin' sumthin' for you. It will have it all.
