A Look Ahead: Upcoming Wii titles of 2009

Posted by: Soriku

The Wii's best year? I absolutely think so.

To many, 2008 seemed like a disappointment for the Wii software-wise during the second half of the year. It was regarded as the Wii's worst year by many, but 2009 changes everything. There are so many quality third party titles coming, and we have yet to hear what Nintendo has in store for the year! Note that this is not a complete list and will miss some titles. Regardless, this shows off the main highlights of the year, and any gamer should be interested in any of these titles. Happy Wii gaming this year!
MadWorld

mad-world-wii.jpg

From the creators of Viewtiful Joe and Okami comes a new game for the Wii! In this game you play as Jack and you must tear down your foes in the game's over-the-top, stylish, and violent black and white setting. Impale enemies on spikes, rip someone's heart out, and slice them up with your chainsaw. For the people who like violent, over-the-top games like No More Heroes, this may seem like what you were looking for.

Muramasa: The Demon Blade

943228_20070921_screen004.jpg

From Vanillaware, the creators of beautiful 2D games like Odin Sphere on the PS2, comes Muramasa: The Demon Blade. While it's not a sequel to Odin Sphere, it seems like a spiritual successor to it. The game focuses on Japanese mythology rather than Norse mythology like Odin Sphere. You choose to play as either the male Kisuke or the female Mohime. For fans of Odin Sphere, action RPGs, or just 2D games in general, this seems like an amazing new game coming to the Wii.
Sin and Punishment 2

Not much is known about this game besides the fact it'll remain an arcade-esque shooter in the same vein as the original. For fans of Treasure, or people hoping for a sequel to the original Sin and Punishment on the N64, your wishes have been granted.
Punch Out!!

medium_2908750544_08efa57740_o.jpg

This game is a cell-shaded remake of the first Punch Out!! on the NES. Glass Joe, Von Kaiser, and King Hippo are all shown as opponents of the Minor Circuit. Motion controls have been confirmed to be used in this game. For fans of the original, or boxing fans looking for a fun new game, this looks like a perfect title for you.
Monster Hunter 3 (tri-)

medium_2928546868_52e5fc11ec_o.jpg

No one expected the Wii to steal the PS3 exclusive that was Monster Hunter 3. This game looks like one of the biggest scale - if not THE biggest scale - games announced for the Wii. The game will be similar to the other Monster Hunter games on the PS2 and PSP and will have much better graphics, a good online system, more monster interaction, a cooler control scheme (for those who don't want to use the Wii remote, classic controller support has been announced), and a new underwater aspect where you can go underwater for some fishing (read: epic underwater hunting!). The game will also support split screen so for those who have friends, a significant other, or family who are into gaming. This game should also be of interest to those wanting large scale games for the Wii, and of course Japanese gamers who are in love with the series, or just like Japanese games in general. This game is likely to come out in Japan but the NA release is still iffy for 2009. Nonetheless it's a great addition to the Wii's 2009 line up.
Klonoa: Door to Phantomile

73751520081027_140924_36_big.jpg

The Klonoa series seems to have a big following. The series must be THAT good. This game is a remake to Klonoa: Door to Phantomile for the PS1. It's also a platforming/RPG hybrid. Fans of the series should look into this game. Not to mention people who want to see what all the hype is about (like me).
Trace Memory R: Gateway of Memory

ss_preview_anotherwii.jpg.jpg

This game is a sequel to the original Trace Memory for the DS. Although this game allows to you adventure, unlike the DS game. For fans of the game on the DS, or those who are interested in mystery games, this should be a title to look forward to.
Arc Rise Fantasia

arcrisef2.jpg

From imageepoch, the creators of Luminous Arc and, comes an RPG for the Wii. The game's artist is Kenichi Yoshida. He was the artist of the anime Eureka Seven. Besides him, there's a lot of promising staff for this awesome looking RPG. The game's scenario is from the same person who wrote Tales of the Abyss' scenario, the director also directed Tales of Symphonia, and the composer is Yasunori Matsuda, who made memorable soundtracks for games like Chrono Trigger and Xenosaga. For the actual game itself, the game is set in the world of Meridian. Creatures called Contaminant Dragons cause trouble and when the empire receives word that the dragons have set their eyes on the capital Diamant, it immediately sets out an army including characters Bright and Alse. Bright is injured but is healed by a girl called Ryphia. The game's main story is said to be 40 hours with even more hours clocking in for doing side quests and the like. It'll also be turn based. For RPGs fans such as myself, you MUST set your eyes on this game.
Fragile: Farewell Ruins of the Moon

313243aaa.jpg

From tri-Crescendo - the makers of the Baten Kaitos games for the GameCube and Eternal Sonata for the Xbox 360 and PS3 - and the Venus & Braves team, comes a brand new action RPG/adventure game for the Wii. Fragile is set in a post-apocalyptic world that has lost its light and is covered by dense fog. Almost all of the world's population has vanished, and the cities have been left abandoned. Not only is the concept cool, but the art is beautiful and amazing. The main character is a boy (yes, he is in fact a guy, not a girl like many seem to think!
smiley-laughing.gif
) named Seto. In the game you use a flashlight and items like sticks, hatchets, bows and arrows, you name it, to fight off enemies. For RPG/adventure enthusiasts this game should be perfect for you.
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time

141149.jpg

Another entry in the Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles series. The game allows Wii and DS players to play at the same time. In the Wii version we know that Miis can be used in the game in the form of masks. Characters we know of are Charlotta, who seems to be the protagonist of the game. She's a young girl who ventures out of her village during her 16th Birthday, finding a massive tower, and the antagonist of the game, called Larkicus. Fans of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, or people looking for an interactive Wii-DS game should look into this game.
Rune Factory Frontier

rune_factory_frontier_wii_1.jpg

This game is another entry in the Rune Factory series. It's a simulation/action RPG, and is similar to Harvest Moon, but you can go to dungeons and fight enemies instead of farming and whatnot. The game takes place on the island of Tranrupia and there is an island in the game that takes the form of a whale in this game. The world is set to be very large, which is awesome. There are many returning characters from the game, and the most notable one is Raguna from Rune Factory: A Fantasy Harvest Moon on the DS. Fans of the series, or people just looking for a large world RPG should look into this title.
Little King's Story

57081520081009_052058_1_big.jpg

Little King's Story is a simulation RPG that seems very promising. Besides the awesome staff of people who worked on Harvest Moon, Dragon Quest VIII, Final Fantasy XII, and the composer being Yoko Shimomura, famous for her music in the Kingdom Hearts series, the concept sounds pretty cool and quirky too. The main character of the game is named Corobo Bredand, who finds a crown which makes people follow his orders. As King of the Village, his goal is to grow the village and make his subjects happy. Besides your kingdom, there are 7 other kingdoms, each with their own king.
Endless Ocean 2: Beautiful Ocean

5938723aaa.jpg

This game is the sequel to Endless Ocean also on the Wii. Not much is known, but anyone familiar with Endless Ocean and has enjoyed it should look into it.
Sonic and the Black Knight

GAM206.pre_sonic.b2_1__article_image.jpg

Another entry in the Sonic series, and releasing exclusively for the Wii. This game follows up from Sonic and the Secret Rings. Set in the world of King Arthur, a sorceress named Merlina summons Sonic to help free the mystical realm of King Arthur, who has been corrupted and is now ruling the realm as the tyrannical Black Knight. Sonic's speed is not enough to break the Black Knight's reign, so he must take up a sword to break Arthur's curse and save the kingdom. The game features sword combat with the Wii Remote and will have free movement like Sonic Unleashed.
Dynamic Slash

2534713aaa.jpg

Dynamic Slash is an action game developed by Sandlot, makers of Earth Defense Force on the Xbox 360. The game is set in Norse Mythology and the heroine will fight huge monsters. Not much else is known.
Kizuna

kizuna07.jpg

Another promising RPG, which is being developed by Jaleco. The game features huge monsters where Lian (the main character) has to find their weak point to defeat them. The game is commonly compared to Shadow of the Colossus. It'll also feature a "pencil effect" art style. The game should be pretty lengthy too - it has 100 quests, not to mention the main storyline and everything else they'll put in this game. Again, RPG or Shadow of the Colossus fans should have this game on their radar.
Tenchu: Shadow Assassins

wiiss65.jpg

This game is Tenchu 4 in Japan but they changed the name for the NA release. Players will use the Wii remote to fight, jump, dash and kill like a ninja. This game will continue the saga of Rikimaru and Ayame, elite ninjas who must use their lethal skills to keep the peace in feudal Japan. There are 10 missions and 50 side quests in this game, so it's pretty lengthy. Fans of Tenchu should look out for this.
Fatal Frame IV: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse

67619-Untitled-1%20copy.jpg

Although this game hasn't been announced in NA yet and has only released in Japan, it's more than likely to come out in NA in 2009. Whether by Tecmo or Nintendo - time will tell. The game is a joint effort between Tecmo, Grasshopper and Nintendo. The player uses the Wii Remote and Nunchuk to aim the camera and flashlight. There are hostile and non-hostile ghosts. To take out hostile ghosts you must use the 'Camera Obscura' in the game to take pictures of the enemy, which damages them. For fans of horror games, this is a great Wii title to look forward to.
Cursed Mountain

normal_Cursed_Mountain-998.jpg

Cursed Mountain is an upcoming survival horror title. Set in the Himalayas, the player controls a mountaineer who is searching for his lost brother. The souls of the people who died in the region are stuck in limbo on the mountain and he must might them off. Combat will utilize Wii motion controls. The entire game world is said to be visible from every level. Survival horror fans should check this out.
The House of the Dead: Overkill
80879_the-house-of-the-dead--overkill.jpg

This game is a first-person rail shooter developed by Headstrong Games and published by Sega. This game is the prequel to the first House of the Dead game. Special Agent G and Detective Washington team up to investigate stories of mysterious disappearances in Louisiana. Little do they know about the blood-soaked mutant depravity that awaits them in the streets and swamps of Bayou City. First-person rail shooting fans or horror fans should look forward to this.
Overlord: Dark Legend

OL_Wii_09.jpg

Overlord: Dark Legend is a Wii exclusive action adventure prequel to the first Overlord for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. Climax Studios and Codemasters seem to be doing a very good job pushing the Wii's graphical power with this game. Like the original Overlord, you play as a young, new overlord as he protects his castle and lands. According to Codemasters, the Wii remote will allow new, unique control mechanisms such as "pluck[ing] a minion from the horde, hold[ing] him by the neck and shak[ing] him around". Fans of the original Overlord should look into this.
The Conduit

the_conduit_interview_01.jpg

Ah, here is the big, hyped exclusive FPS for the Wii that will decide the fate of every "core" Wii game that will ever be released on the Wii...sort of. Well...actually not really. Anyway, the game is being developed by High Voltage Software and received multiple awards at E3 2008 for best graphics on the Wii, best shooter for the Wii, and best overall Wii game. The multiplayer aspect is very promising: the game will feature at least three competitive multiplayer modes for online play, including Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and Capture the Flag modes. There will be voice chat using Wii Speak, and LAN play is being worked on. The multiplayer will support up to 16 players simultaneously. There will also be a campaign mode featuring a story.
Deadly Creatures

deadlypic-mar10.jpg

Deadly Creatures is an upcoming action thriller for the Wii where you play as a scorpion and a tarantula and you will fight other insects and arachnids. The concept makes it out to be a 3D brawler, but the lead designer said there will be more to the game than that. The game will also feature a dark story. Looks like a promising game, and quite different from what THQ usually offers.
Let's Tap

wiiss32.jpg
Let's Tap consists of a number of minigames that require the player to tap a flat surface with their hands to play. The game requires the player to set the Wii face-side down on a flat, stable surface, with the accelerometer picking up their vibrations as they tap the surface to move an on screen character in a race, inflate a balloon, create ripples in a pool of water, or paint swirls on a canvas. Definitely different from your average game, that's for sure, but it seems fun!
Bleach: Versus Crusade

2903773701_559d4a0edc.jpg
Unlike many other Bleach installments, this game is being developed by Treasure. Scans depict a roster of characters in line with the manga storyline, featuring Neliel, Nnoitra, Ichigo with his hollow mask and Grimmjow's released form. It is a one-on-one fighter, but players pick a partner character for various team-up attacks and other maneuvers, as well as being able to switch between them. It will support Wi-Fi play and can be played with the Classic controller or Gamecube controller in place of the Wii-Remote and Nunchuk.
Wii Sports Resort

wiiss93.jpg
Nooo!!! Another casual Wii game! But wait...what did you say? This game comes bundled with MotionPlus, an accessory which makes Wii controls 1:1, which is something we've been wanting for a long time (also what we believed the Wii was capable of at launch) and will enhance games? Woah! Anyway, it's the sequel to Wii Sports and will no doubt sell TONS. Games announced so far are: Frisbee (Disc Dog), Jet Skiing (Power Cruising) and Kendo (Sword Play). 10 Games will be included in the final product.
Tales of Ten

2i745jt.jpg

We got little info, and an amazing, yet short trailer, and this is my most anticipated game of 2009 by far! It's a new main entry Tales game for the Wii a la Symphonia, Abyss, or Vesperia. This game's inspiration came from Medieval Europe. It has been confirmed for a Japan only release in 2009 (this should come over though, so no worries!). Tales of Ten is a code name for now, and will know the official name of the title sooner or later.

Indeed!
