NeoWin has a link up to this news story about the financial condition of AMD. While they continue to do pretty well in sales volume, their margins appear so razor-thin that they continue to struggle to make a profit. Gaining market share at the expense of profit is nothing new, but speculation is growing about how much longer AMD will be able to continue to operate at a loss. Is it possible that AMD could raise chip prices to profitable levels and still maintain market share while they battle Intel for the desktop? Will their new 64 bit chips provide them with the inroad into corporate sales that they need in order to maintain a higher-margin, high-performance server and workstation product line?
