AMD delays Dresden plant expansion by 'several quarters' due to financial woes

July 27, 2007: 09:57 AM EST

DRESDEN, Germany, Jul. 27, 2007 (Thomson Financial delivered by Newstex) -- Microprocessor maker Advanced Micro Devices Inc has delayed expansion of its facility in Dresden by 'several quarters' after the company reported a 600 mln usd net loss last week.

'Due to the weak results in the first two quarters we had to revise our financial position and make adjustments,' the facility's director Hans Deppe said.

No job cuts are planned, he added.

The plan to switch the site's production to 300mm wafers from 200mm needs to be postponed from 2008 until 2009, Deppe said.

AMD Cancels Fab Upgrade

According to sources a while back AMD was planning to upgrade its Dresden fab 30 to 65nm and 300mm wafers thus becoming fab 38 in 2008. That was of course prior to losing more than $1 billion USD in two quarters thus pushing AMD to cancel its upgrade. However the plant has reached the 65nm stage but the wafers are still 200mm and will remain until 2009.
