AMD FX55 and A64 4000+ systems up for sale
EARLY BIRDS subscribed to PCW mag and who have already received their latest December copy will probably have noticed the presence of two systems featuring the yet to be formally announced Athlon 64 4000+.
The first one is the Evesham Axis Xcelsior which sports the Athlon 64 4000+ and a MSI K8N Nforce 3 250 based motherboard. Two 512MB memory modules populate half of the available slots bringing the total memory to 1GB. Two 160GB Western Digital hard disks installed in RAID-1 mean that you won't lose data easily.
On top of that, Evesham has included one Sony Dual layer 16x DVD writer and the superb Creative Audigy 2 ZS matched with a Creative Inspire T9700 speakers.
Other parts include a Radeon X800XT graphic card with 256MB memory, Microsoft Wireless bundle combo and the topping, a 20-inch Viewsonic LCD monitor, the VP201s. The software pack include Pinnacle Studio 9SE, Windows XP Home, Works 7 and Etrust EZ antivirus. The price is steep at £1899+VAT. But for those who still want the A4000+ but can do without the other bells and whistles, you can get a slimmed down version for only £1061.62+VAT from their online configurator
The second PC is the Mesh Matrix 4000+ which is not yet available on its website. The latter's configuration is slightly less demanding as compared to the Evesham system. The 4000+ has the same memory configuration as the Evesham - 1GB in two modules but a different motherboard, the Asus A8V deluxe. The primary storage used is an abnormally large 300GB SATA hard disk drive from Maxtor. There are also two secondary drives consisting of a Sony 16x dual layer DVD Writer and a CD-RW drive.
Also in the box is a Creative Labs Audigy 2 ZS platinum card, better than the Evesham one, coupled with the same speakers though. The graphic subsystem consists of a Leadtek Geforce A440 6800GT graphic card coupled with a 19-inch Viewsonic LCD monitor. The rest is pretty much standard, Windows XP Home, Logitech Wireless mouse and keyboard, modem and Gigabit LAN. No difference between the Evesham and the Mesh one on the software side. Pretty much the same stuff but at a much cheaper price - £1399. Last word on the apparent presence of an Asus 802.11G WiFi PCI card which cannot be confirmed though.
On top of that, Mesh allows you to swap the 4000+ for a FX55 processor with a smaller 250GB hard disk, this brings the price to a challenging £1570.06+VAT which should allow it to grab the "Fastest PC in the World" title for at least a week.
Other system retailers like Tiny and other online suppliers in UK are yet to stock these parts. But I would guess that Athlon 64 4000+ are going to enjoy quite a good time simply because they start a new cycle that Intel will be sorely missing. What does that mean for AMD fanboys? It seems that AMD supplies are aplenty as compared to their arch-rival as they have already supplied the goods to retailers before the official launch. µ
