AMD Launches Puma Mobile Platform

AMD to launch Puma platform in June
33848.jpg

AMD is planning to release its long-awaited Puma notebook platform next month at Computex Taipei on June 3. The Puma platform will include a newer 'Griffin' processor and AMD's 780M chipset. The Griffin processor has two cores and is based on older Turion K8 processors. It has been specifically designed for notebook use with better power management. Features include 2MB or more of L2 cache (1MB per core), and each core can run at a different frequency.
The Puma platform will have HyperTransport 3 and DDR2-667/800 memory support. The 780M chipset will feature DirectX 10 integrated graphics. The integrated graphics will work in conjunction with a discrete graphics card (if available) to help lower power consumption; the discrete GPU will only be used when needed.

AMD announces Puma at Computex

AMD has introduced its Puma notebook platform and announced the availability of products based on the platform at a press conference in Taipei city today.

The Puma platform features the new AMD Turion X2 Ultra dual-core ‘Griffin’ mobile processors and ATI Radeon HD 3000 series graphics. AMD claims that this will enable users to experience “the ultimate HD visual performance and increasing energy efficiency.”

“There are only two companies in the world that can build and deliver high-performance microprocessors and there are only two companies in the world that can build and deliver high-performance graphics solutions. Only AMD can do both,” said Dirk Meyer, president and COO of AMD.

Puma is based on AMD’s M780G chipset, which is very similar to the desktop version that launched earlier this year – it includes the same technologies that were in 780G, such as Hybrid CrossFireX, ATI’s UVD engine and Avivo. In addition to that, AMD has integrated a technology known as PowerXpress – this allows notebook manufacturers to include a Mobility Radeon 3000-series graphics card and it’s only running when it’s required.

We’ve seen demos of this technology working on some early development notebooks and we have to say it was pretty impressive. As soon as you unplug the notebook’s power supply, a driver window pops up and warns you that the discrete graphics adapter will be disabled. The switch isn’t quite perfect because the screen flickers a little when you’re changing from discrete to integrated graphics, but it’s automatic and that is what is most important in our opinion.

Next-Generation AMD Puma Platform Notebooks Now Available
AMD also announces new ATI Mobility GPU

AMD announced at Computex today that its next-generation notebook platform is now available and features not only new chipsets, but new graphics options and new processor availability. AMD says that the next-generation notebook platform -- code named Puma -- will be the foundation for the new AMD Business class, AMD GAME! and AMD LIVE! notebook solutions.

The notebook platform utilizes the new AMD Turion X2 Ultra Dual-core mobile processor. The new processor has technology to make it more energy efficient including AMD Independent Dynamic Core technology, mobile-optimized memory controller and a new power-optimized HyperTransport 3.0.

The new mobile chipset also features integrated ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics and supports DirectX 10. Integrated graphics in a notebook usually means the inability to do anything requiring intense graphics like gaming. AMD says that its integrated HD 3200 graphics delivers up to three times the 3D performance of competitor’s products and features built-in ATI Avivo HD technology for smooth HD video playback.

ATI announced a new Mobility Radeon 3800 series as well offering the highest performance of any Mobile Radeon HD part. The Mobility Radeon 3800 supports PCI Express 2.0, DirectX 10.1, integrated HDMI, DVI and DisplayPort as well as multi-monitor support. The 3800 can support up to 4 displays natively.

The Mobility 3800 also works with ATI’s CrossFireX and Hybrid Graphics to provide more performance by running both the discrete and integrated graphics processors at the same time.

AMD says that notebooks running the next-generation Puma platform are now available from OEM suppliers like Acer, Asus, Clevo, HP and more.

HP Pavilion dv5z Review

Conclusion

As I mentioned in our First Look, there are a lot of reasons to be excited about this notebook. First, we're just glad to see HP release a new notebook chassis design since they were using the same old dv6000 series design for several years. More importantly, we're in complete awe over the performance of the integrated graphics on this machine.

Sure, you can get better gaming performance if you spend more money for a notebook with a good dedicated graphics card, but you would have to purchase a mid-range or high performance dedicated card to surpass the performance of the integrated graphics in the dv5z. For the first time consumers shopping for a budget notebook don't have to sacrifice performance in order to have a low-cost laptop.

In the end, the HP Pavilion dv5z left me more than a little frustrated. The simple reality is that this budget notebook packs the best integrated graphics solution we've ever seen inside it's sleek chassis. However, battery life was far too limiting. In fact, this notebook would have received an Editor's Choice Award if it could have managed at least 3 hours of battery life ... but 2 hours and 22 minutes is just unacceptable.

Also, it's hard to understand why HP doesn't allow consumer to purchase this notebook with a Blu-ray drive unless the system is configured with a dedicated graphics card. The new ATI Radeon HD 3200 IGP is perfectly capable of running a Blu-ray drive, so it makes no sense for HP to require consumers to purchase a dedicated graphics card.

If you can live with the poor battery life and lack of Firewire it's hard not to recommend this notebook to anyone and everyone needing a laptop for less than $900.

Pros:

* Amazing integrated graphics performance!
* Great design and build quality
* Amazing integrated graphics performance!
* Fabulous screen
* Amazing integrated graphics performance!
* Great keyboard and media buttons
* Amazing integrated graphics performance!
* Includes HDMI and eSATA ports
* Did I mention the AMAZING integrated graphics performance?

Cons:

* Poor battery life
* No Firewire port
* No built-in TV tuner option at time of this writing
* No Blu-ray option with integrated graphics even though the HD 3200 IGP can handle it
* Touchpad surface is either great or "sticky" depending on how dry your fingers are

Segundo a review:
There is also an available high-capacity 6-cell Li-Ion battery for those users needing extended battery life. It's odd that there is no 9-cell or 12-cell battery option at the time of this writing, but that may change in the future.

In fact, this notebook would have received an Editor's Choice Award if it could have managed at least 3 hours of battery life ... but 2 hours and 22 minutes is just unacceptable.

The pricing on the dv5z starts at around $699.99 ($599.99 with $100 instant rebate), and our configuration has a few upgrades that brought the final price to $849.99 at the time of this writing. Needless to say, this is a fabulous price point for back-to-school shoppers.
