AMD Preps Partners for "Barcelona" Launch

2GHz Barcelona to compete with 2.33GHz Clovertown

During a chat with AMD’s Steve Demski, product manager for Opteron line, we learned that the company’s upcoming Barcelona processors will launch at 2.0GHz and, more interestingly, will compete with Intel’s Xeon 5345 processor, which is clocked at 2.33GHz.

When asked about the clock frequencies Barcelona will launch at, Felipe Payet, worldwide channel market development manager in AMD’s server/workstation product group, told us that “we don’t think that’s necessarily all that low.”

Payet then went onto explain the reasoning behind that statement “[AMD] tends to lag in terms of pure clock frequency, but that doesn’t mean we lag in performance. Given the fact that we use a HyperTransport and direct connect based design, clock frequency is no longer an indication of performance.”

Demski then chimed in to add some more context to Payet’s statements. “Even though 2.0GHz doesn’t sound like a lot, we will put our 2.0GHz part up against their 2.33GHz part and we will be very comfortable with that.

“If you compare our medium power part to their medium power part we think we’ll be compare very favourably. And the same is true with the low power parts. The thing we’re lacking is that we don’t have that SE high performance part, which is coming later this year,” he said.

How much later this year is unclear at the moment, but it looks like Barcelona’s clock speed deficit might not be all doom and gloom. Obviously AMD isn’t going to compete with Intel’s Xeon 5355 or soon-to-be-released 5365 processors, which are clocked at 2.66GHz and 3.00GHz respectively – that’s going to have to wait a while.

DailyTech recently spoke to partners close to AMD and has what it claims to be AMD’s launch plans for the Opteron processors (up to Q2 2008). According to the report, AMD will launch Barcelona-based Opterons at up to 2.5GHz in both 2P and 4P configurations with TDPs as high as 120W in Q4 2007 and the clockspeed will be increased to 2.6GHz in Q2 2008.

There is unfortunately no news on the desktop front at the moment. However, if AMD was to launch Phenom at 2.0GHz, it’d probably not be enough to keep up with Intel’s Core 2 Quad Q6600, and could be a reason why we will not see a simultaneous desktop/server launch. Instead, it looks like we might have to wait until Q4 before AMD launches Phenom… right in time for when Intel starts to roll out its 45nm Yorkfield processors.

Certo:
Then comes the real killer blow for AMD - While they use DDR2 modules, which have a relatively low power consumption, Intel's current server architectures require the use of FBDIMMS, which are renowned for having far high power consumption. From AMD's numbers, this leaves us with what could amount to considerable power saving using a server built around Barcelona.

Phenom X2 Dual core can hit 3.4 GHz
Top speed

Phenom X2 would be initially shipping at faster speeds than 3 GHz and the real quantity comes in Q1 2008. Still there is a light as this CPU can hit 3.4 GHz.

We are talking about Kuma DC – dual core processor that is supposed to follow the Barcelona and Phenom FX and X4 launch.

Kuma Dual core also had the same limitation with B0 who didn’t want to work faster than 2.4GHz, B1 that worked at 2.7 GHz and finally B2 that works from 1.6 to 3 GHz with 1.25V for the top speed.

B2 revision needs some 20 percent less power to work at the same speed and therefore has the lower TDP at the same clock. This is what AMD has been working on for the whole 2007.

Phenom X4 can hit 3.24 GHz
That is the top speed of the B2

According to some internal information Barcelona / Phenom X4 Quad core can hit 3.24 GHz. This is the top speed of the B2 revision of the core.

We already reported that AMD can hit 3.0 GHz at 1.38V and a TDP (Thermal Design Power) of a still acceptable 120W.

Well, the good news is that this is not the final stop. If necessary AMD can clock this CPU even higher and 3.24GHz is currently the fastest speed that AMD can hit and probably wrap in its warranty.

Clock per clock, the 3 GHz Barcelona / Phenom X4 should beat a Core 2 Quad at 3 GHZ, so this would mean that 3.24 GHz from AMD should be enough to fight Penryn at 3.33 GHz, at least in theory.

AMD to launch Barcelona quad-core on September 10

amd_launch_425.jpg

Chicago (IL) – AMD today sent out emails inviting analysts, media and industry representatives to what the company calls "the most anticipated premiere of 2007".

Barcelona will not arrive one day too early: While the company does not explicitly mention the new quad-core as the proponent of its announcement, there is little doubt what will be announced on this day. Matching a report published by the Inquirer published in June, AMD will unveil its new quad-core architecture, which the company so desperately needs to restore its competitiveness in the 2P server market and prepare itself for the arrival of Intel's Tigerton processor in the 4P segment.

If the Inquirer is right, then Barcelona will arrive with clock speeds of up to 2.0 GHz, while faster versions with up to 2.4 GHz are expected to be available during the fourth quarter of the year. If AMD keeps its promise of avoiding a paper launch, then Barcelona-based systems should be available for purchase beginning at launch or the day right after it, September 11.

The question now is when AMD will be able to follow up and bring the Barcelona architecture to the desktop. We were told by AMD representatives that Phenom will follow 60 to 90 days after Barcelona, which puts the introduction of the chip into the mid-November to mid-December time frame.

The Barcelona launch event will be held in San Francisco's Presidio, beginning at 6:30 PM on September 10

Barcelona issues

With the passable launch date of September 10 there seems two be a couple of problems with the chip and compatibility. It seems that the Dual Dynamic Power Management will not work without a BIOS update, and with a supported motherboard. This is something to be expected from knowing that some features will not be supported on former socket types.

“It seems the CPU itself is capable of engaging in CoolCore operations, but not Dual Dynamic Power Management (formerly “Split Plane,” which allowed each core to operate independently with different voltages and clock speeds). It won’t be able to handle these power saving and performance enhancing aspects of operations from the core alone. The motherboard must be brought into the mix in an active way to help reduce power consumption and save energy when the many cores are not in high use.”

The other issue while not truly being an issue is the 128-bit floating point. There simply isn't any software on the market to take advantage of it. Hearing something like this isn't new to the PC market at all. The 64Bit CPUs are just now starting to see the light after a few years of their release, and Dual core CPUs are also just now starting to be implemented into applications. It's safe to say that the 128-bit floating point technology may take some time before developers start using it.

First Barcelona chips to cost less than $400

By Cyril Kowaliski - 9:17 AM, August 13, 2007

We already know AMD intends to launch "Barcelona" quad-core Opteron processors clocked at up to 2GHz next month, but anonymous sources at server manufacturers have provided the guys at DigiTimes with a more detailed roadmap of AMD's upcoming quad-core server launches.
According to DigiTimes, AMD plans to roll out two quad-core Opterons on September 10: a 1.9GHz Opteron 2340 and a 2GHz model known as the Opteron 2350. These two processors will cost $320 and $390, respectively, and they'll both have 95W thermal ratings. If those prices are accurate, the chips will both cost roughly $20 more than quad-core Xeons with similar clock speeds (i.e. the 1.86GHz Xeon E5320 and the 2GHz Xeon E5335).

With the first batch of Opterons out the door, AMD will reportedly prep for the launch of a 2.2GHz Opteron 2354 in October. DigiTimes says that chip will have the same 95W thermal rating as its 1.9GHz and 2.0GHz brethren, but its price tag will be $610. That's about $100 more than what the 2.33GHz Xeon E5345 costs today.

|-> Stupid !

AMD's Henri Richard to step down

Advanced Micro Devices will announce the imminent departure of Henri Richard, the company's chief sales officer, later this afternoon, CNET News.com has confirmed.

A source familiar with AMD's plans confirmed the news, first reported earlier Wednesday by Hexus.net, that Richard plans to step down from his post as executive vice president and chief sales and marketing officer. Hexus said Richard's departure will be effective as of September 8.

Richard's loss is a very significant development in what has been a disastrous year for AMD. Its flagship product for 2007, a quad-core server chip known as Barcelona, will arrive six months later than expected after a number of technical glitches. AMD has lost a ton of money in the interim, trying to compete against Intel's quad-core chips by slashing the prices of its dual-core chips.

Richard has been a very public figure at AMD, where CEO Hector Ruiz and COO Dirk Meyer are much less visible. Richard presided over a question-and-answer session with reporters last month at AMD's analyst meeting, and has been one of the leading executive voices behind AMD's antitrust campaign against Intel. He has been with AMD since 2002, right before its surge coming off the launch of the Opteron processor.

An AMD representative declined to comment on the report. If the date of Richard's departure is accurate, the company will have to pull off its biggest product launch of the year with Barcelona without its head salesman.

Richard to Leave AMD Confirmed

TO: All Employees

FROM: Hector Ruiz, AMD Chairman and CEO - Dirk Meyer, AMD President and COO

SUBJECT: Henri Richard

We are sad to announce that Henri Richard has made the decision to leave AMD.

When Henri joined AMD in 2002, his primary mission was to establish a world-class global Sales and Marketing organization. It is safe to say that he has accomplished that mission, and he is now ready for a new challenge in his career. While we will certainly miss him, it’s a measure of his success that the organization he leaves behind is fully poised to succeed and capable of maintaining and building the momentum that we have built.

In the last five years, we have increased exponentially our global account footprint, acquiring customers of every caliber, including the top PC and server OEMs around the world. In fact, from Toshiba and Acer to Lenovo, Dell, Sun and HP, we have become a critical strategic partner to our customers and a key component of enterprise solutions and consumer products worldwide.

Commensurate with this growth in our business, and the strength of our corporate and product brands, we have a Sales and Marketing organization that can support and continue to grow our strategic importance to our customers. Nevertheless, we know this was a difficult decision for Henri, especially as we are poised to enjoy the successes of our acquisition of ATI, our upcoming quad-core Barcelona product and our strong product and technology roadmaps.

Henri’s official departure date is still pending, and we will communicate a leadership plan shortly.

Look for a Q&A with Henri to appear on AMD Online in the next day or two. Henri will discuss AMD’s accomplishments over the last five years, and our phenomenal opportunities moving forward.

Please join us in thanking Henri for his leadership and wishing him well in his post-AMD career.

Parece-me bem.
