Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), world's second largest chip maker, is planning to announce the company's 2600+, 64-bit processor for the desktop market. This microprocessor will be aimed at low-end or budget-conscious users, who can't afford the company's high-end Athlon FX and 3400+, 64-bit chips.
AMD will be launching this chip to compete with Intel's low-end Prescott processors, reported Channel Times.
The performance will be acceptable from a budget perspective and mainly it will be 64-bit enabled.
At the end of Q3, AMD announced its 2800+ Athlon 64 desktop chip to target the affordable market. The 2800+ microprocessor features 1.8 GHz clock speeds, 512KB L2 cache, and single-channel memory controller. AMD expected to compete against Intel's highly priced Prescott chips with the 2800+.
AMD 2600+ Athlon 64 processor is expected to feature PGA754 packaging, 512KB on-board L2 cache, and most likely 1.60 GHz clock speeds.
The price is expected to be around $150.00, which will most definitely make this processor a strong choice for budget-minded users. Many system integrators will also appreciate the new offering from AMD as it will attract more buyers.
AMD did not comment on the report.
