AMD Readies “Spider” High-Performance Platform


ATI CrossFire multi-GPU technology was announced in mid-2005, but has not really gained widespread popularity since then, partly because ATI’s flagship graphics products faced delays and partly because Nvidia put tremendous efforts into popularization of its SLI multi-GPU technology. But ATI, graphics product group of Advanced Micro Devices, may be hoping to reverse the trend with introduction of ATI CrossFireX tech.

Later this year AMD plans to announced new ATI CrossFireX multi-GPU technology that will bring such benefits as 3- and 4-way CrossFire, CrossFire Overdrive, hybrid CrossFire and other features that are set to improve performance, compatibility, scalability and flexibility of ATI’s multi-GPU technology, sources close to AMD told X-bit labs.


The new technology will be supported by AMD’s forthcoming chipsets, including AMD 790X and AMD 790 FX that feature PCI Express Gen. 2 as well as various graphics cards, such as ATI Radeon HD 2600-series, ATI code-named RV670-series and, perhaps, ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT/Pro/GT graphics cards. Currently AMD’s graphics product group is mulling on exact configurations and specifications to be supported via CrossFireX.

Since at the moment AMD can hardly offer the highest-performing graphics solution on the market, it is projected that the company will push its triple and quad CrossFire configurations consisting of three or four graphics cards based on ATI RV670 against Nvidia SLI and Nvidia triple SLI configurations. Even though when it comes to 3-way and 4-way graphics processing actual rendering performance is fully dependent on drivers, ATI tells its partners that the technology will deliver benefits in key DirectX 10 games, such as Bioshock, Call of Juarez, Company of Heroes, Crysis and Lost Planet.

In addition to performance scaling with multiple graphics processing units (GPUs), AMD will also offer such features as CrossFire Overdrive and Hybrid CrossFire under the CrossFireX initiative. The former will dynamically alter clock-speeds of graphics cards in order to boost performance, whereas the latter will allow to combine rendering power of discrete and integrated graphics cores and to disable high-performance GPUs when their horsepower is no longer needed to cut power consumption.

ATI CrossFireX will be a part of AMD’s code-named Spider high-performance platform along with AMD Phenom triple- and quad-core processors, but is likely to become available already later this year, not in Q1 2008.

The most noticeable things CrossFire X will do are listed below.
  • 3/4 way CrossFire
  • Allow for two or more completely different cards to be combined under the same CrossFire Platform
  • CrossFire Overdrive, which allows for the dramatic increase of graphics clocks across a CrossFire platform, regardless of how many cards said platform may consist of.
  • CrossFire Hybrid, which allows for the combination of integrated/onboard graphics and graphics card rendering, disabling the latter when it is not needed to reduce power consumption.

Yes the X48 chipset and X38 will support it. the cfg is 100% sure for 3 cards in 16x, 8x, 8x using the Crosslinx on the Asus maximus, and for sure the 4x cards version will be release too then.( now i have no info about the speed of the PCI express in this configuration) This have been confirmed by Asus to the press today during a presentation of their new motherboards.

AMD Hybrid Crossfire

Uma espreitadela ao Hybrid Crossfire em funcionamento. Achei melhor recuperar esta thread do que abrir outra dado que não é uma review completa.

What this all means is that for around $150 or less, users will be able to purchase a platform that could power four displays, accelerate HD video, and actually play current DX10 games. We saw a system up and running with an RS780 motherboard, a Radeon HD 3450, and a 2.2GHz Phenom 9500 processor, and even with the early state of the drivers and hardware, it was able to play Call of Duty 4 at over 30FPS at 1024x768 with just the IGP, and in Hybrid CrossFire mode performance jumped to over 50FPS. We also saw Unreal Tournament 3 running on the same system. With the IGP alone, UT3 ran at about 27FPS at 1024x768 and scaled to 45FPS in Hybrid CrossFire mode. That’s very strong performance for an IGP, especially considering the games had perfect image quality. Some current IGPs don’t render cutting edge games with very good image quality, if they can run them at all.

Com placas de gama de entrada isto é interessante e já deve chegar bem para os gamers ocasionais. Mas penso que ao ser associado a uma placa gráfica digna desse nome os ganhos de performance serão imperceptíveis, se os houver. Bom mesmo será a poupança de energia quando se estiver apenas em 2D, desligando quase por completo a gráfica "discrete".
 
Ja se estava a falar de crossfireX em outra thread, mas de facto, acho que o assunto merece ser tratado em thread propria. portanto, as discussões relativamente a este tema, devem ser tidas aqui.
