ATI RD550 Details Emerge, HDCP Inside RS690

Dongle-less CrossFire, full HDCP support on both desktop and mobile platforms, and more

We've come across some ATI documents that reveal ATI's next generation CrossFire enabled chipset which will be positioned as a mainstream part. RD550 has not yet received an official name at this time but details include support for 1x16 + 1x8 PCIe slots. RD550 will also enable dongle-less CrossFire support which will be a welcomed feature by enthusiasts.

RD550 is an AMD based chipset and will have support for AMD's upcoming AM2 platform. Support for AM2 will also be included with RD580. Boards using RD550 are expected to be announced sometime in March of this year. Interestingly, during the same time frame, no new chipsets for Intel processors will be introduced but Intel users can expect to see RD600 products to emerge in June. RD600 is slated to support 2x8 PCIe slots and DDR3 memory.

Also coming in June will be ATI's RS600 and RS690 parts which are both positioned as mainstream parts. A key feature of RS600 and RS690 is that ATI will implement full HDCP support on chip. According to the documents ATI indicates that the chipset will hold the necessary HDCP keys as well as support an integrated HDCP-DVI TMDS transmitter. HD audio will also be another key feature for RS600 series. Interestingly, details are noted that a mobile version of the same chipset will also have HDCP keys integrated on chip. Both chipsets will include the ability to output full HD content and come equiped with HDMI connections.

Então a diferença entre o RD550 e o RD580 supostamente é de um pci-ex 8x para um de 16, certo? Basicamente é o mesmo mas com menos lanes ao todo?

No pci-ex de 8x "encaixam" placas para slots 16x? Eu sei que há umas DFI que deixam encaixar placas de 16x em slots de 4x mas não sei se é só a marca que fez o "corte" ou se são todos assim.

Isso não tem nada a ver com o encaixe PCI-Express, mas sim com um novo conector no topo da placa, como o SLI.

Os slots PCIe x4 normalmente são fechados, permitindo apenas ligar placas x1 e x4 (o da DFI é uma excepção, mas a velocidade ficará sempre limitada a x4 no máximo, como é óbvio).
Um slot x8 permite ligar todas as placas da anterior e as x8.
Um slot x16 permite todas as anteriores e x16.

Mas já um slot x16 "físico" pode vir de fábrica a suportar apenas x8 -de velocidade apenas-, sem possibilidade de alterar essa config., como na Epox NF4 SLI para socket 754 (ambos os slots são sempre x8, mesmo quando só há uma placa no slot primário e o segundo está livre)

Sim, físicamente terão de ser ambos PCIe x16.

Também há slots físicos x8, mas quase não são usados em motherboards de PC's normais (há algumas motherboards para servidores que os usam para ligar placas RAID ou InfiniBand, tomando o lugar das antigas ligações PCI de 64 bits a 66/100/133mhz).

TOMORROW'S LAUNCH of the Radeon Xpress 3200 is going to be mostly focused on the already available Asus motherboard with a curious name A8R32-MVP. You've been able to buy the board for quite some time.

Although the Asus board uses the ULI Nvidia south bridge, ATI used RD580 to quietly launch a small step for it, but a big step for motherboard engineers: an SB460 south bridge.

Although it is logically identical to SB450 (no SATA-II, USB 2.0 is still... Performance by ATI), the biggest change is the fact that it is pin-to-pin compatible with the upcoming SB600 south bridge chip, giving engineers enough time to play around with a production chip. The south bridge should remove the use for the Nvidia's M1575 chip and enable an ATI-only chipset. It ticks all of the missing checkmarks: S-ATA-II and Ultra ATA-133 interfaces, enhanced USB 2.0 performance and most of all - still features HD Audio, which is a real KO when compared to the relatively poor AC'97 codec of Nforce4 chipset fame.

The SB600 will launch in time with RS482 and RX485 chipsets for AMD Socket 939/AM2 and respectively. Bear in mind that the real AM2 chipset goes under the codename RX690 for discrete and RS690 for integrated graphics. What's most interesting about RS690 is the fact that it will be the first Windows Vista-ready integrated thing, featuring HDMI support and AVIVO video tech. This means, all of the HD video goodness integrated graphics can buy, probably accelerating 720p resolution. µ

O SB600 vai ser bestial ou besta, toda a gente sabe que é difícil fazer SB's. Eu espero que seja tudo aquilo que esperam dele, embora tenha algumas reservas.
