Despite what ATI told us at our Avivo briefing last month (although ATI insists it was a miscommunication), H.264 decode acceleration is not launching alongside the R5xx GPUs. ATI is committed to bringing both H.264 decode acceleration and transcode assist by the end of the year, but for now, we have no way of testing those features.

The subjective numbers add up to pretty much summarize our experience with ATI's Avivo at this point. While neither ATI nor NVIDIA produced a perfect solution, at this point Avivo is definitely a step behind NVIDIA's PureVideo in terms of de-interlacing quality.

Something I find less charming regarding all cooling solutions on the entire range of X1000 cards is that the fans are rather noisy. Not terrible but definitely clearly audible during gameplay or when the core temperature rises beyond a certain threshold.

Conclusoes:

The basic architecture, clocks and memory size of the Radeon X1800 XT make it undoubtedly the fastest overall graphics accelerator on the planet, ATI regaining the crown they've not worn since GeForce 7800 GTX and G70 blew us all away back at the end of June. The performance crown, while not as important as it used to be, is a fine fitting one to wear proudly and X1800 XT does that straight out of the gate. The general rule is that if it's D3D9 and you're not CPU limited, it'll likely blow everything else away at the time of writing.

So what have we learned from the launch of the X1800XT? Well first off we can see that ATI have made some huge improvements over the X850XT. There are as expected increases across the board however some of the increases such as those seen in Battlefield 2 are quite astounding.

Looking next at the new features the X1800XT brings to the table there are two which are immediately beneficial to everyone. The first is adaptive anti aliasing, as you can see from our image quality screenshots there are some real benefits to IQ when you apply the new technique. The fact that these IQ benefits are not accompanied by huge performance hits is great. Also immediately beneficial is the ability to use AA with HDR. As mentioned previously there isnt another product on the market that allows this so ATI may well be on to a real winner here. That is of course if Nvidia don’t manage to release a comparative feature before many games take advantage of HDR.

In summary, the X1800XT does exactly what it should. In most applications it outperforms every other single card solution on the market whilst at the same time bringing some excellent must have features to the graphics card world. When you consider all of this comes backed by ATI's excellent software suite which provided us with complete stability throughout our testing period (and for many months previous) its hard not to recommend the X1800XT to anyone wishing for the fastest 3D performance.
http://www.driverheaven.net/reviews/r520reviewxvxv/conclusion.htm

From a pure graphics technology standpoint, the Radeon X1000 series of graphics processors doesn't break new ground with bold innovations, but it does give ATI nearly every feature that the GeForce 7 series GPUs have had over the Radeon X800s. Not only that, but ATI has added a number of worthwhile capabilities, including multisampled antialiasing with high-dynamic-range color modes, "free" tone mapping via the Avivo display engine, and much finer-grained batch sizes for dynamic flow control in Shader Model 3.0. ATI has also caught up with NVIDIA on the internal chip architecture front by decoupling the computational units responsible for the various stages of the graphics pipeline from one another, allowing more flexibility for the development adventurous variations on the core GPU architecture, like the RV530

At the very high end of the market, the Radeon X1800 XT is indeed a worthy competitor for the GeForce 7800 GTX. In Direct3D games, the X1800 XT is usually faster than the 7800 GTX. Unfortunately, ATI's weak showing in OpenGL games keep the X1800 XT from capturing the undisputed heavyweight title. I also have a few concerns about the likely extent of the Radeon X1800 XT's availability in the market, given its relatively high GPU clock speeds. We will have to wait and see about that.

There's so much new stuff in these cards that it's almost hard to wrap your head around. ATI has caught up to Nvidia with full support for Shader Model 3.0, though ATI claims it does this better and suffers less from games with long complex shaders and lots of dynamic branching. We'll have to wait for more advanced games to test these claims. The new memory controller, shader thread dispatch unit, and improvements to compression and cache are really promising. ATI has stepped up its video and display output game with this first Avivo-branded part. We'll dig into these features in more detail in a separate article, but our simple subjective tests left us with a great opinion of it. We also like the fact that ATI has a full top-to-bottom card lineup, even if there is quite a gap from $249 to $449. Unfortunately, not all the cards are shipping yet. We've chosen to focus on the two top-tier X1800 cards here.

3dmark01 numa placa destas?

Top Ultra-End:
X1800XT
High-end:
7800GTX/GT
X1800XL
(X1800pro??)
Mid-end:
X800GT/GTO/GTO2
6800ultra/GT dependendo do preço
Low-End:
X1300

Anyway, during our tests we stumbled into a bug here and there. Riddick performance was way beyond what it's supposed to be, also at one point Doom 3 rendered a black screen once, a reset fixed this though. And we did see abnormal performance for the X1600 XT with Doom 3 and 4xAA and 8xAF enabled. This test had to be done with the only beta drivers available.

The Radeon X1800 XL is impressive, but not as impressive as the GeForce 7800 GT is. Often the score is close to the competitors card yet for some reason at several tests falls behind in performance quickly up-to a level where it was close to the Radeon X850 XT series of cards. Now don't get me wrong, that's still really lovely performance. Yet you can pick up an x850 XT for under 350 USD these days. It might be driver related though. The drivers we had available were beta and what I understand from the driver team not at all optimized just yet for the new cards.
