PC Battlefield 2

As EA announces the next major title in the Battlefield series, we friendly fire some questions their way about what to expect.

GameSpy: Will Battlefield 2 retain the same core gameplay as the previous Battlefield titles, i.e. "Conquest" capture-and-hold? What can you tell us about the new Commander mode?

Scott Evans: Our goal with BF2 is to deliver a mix of what people loved about previous BF titles, what they felt should be improved, and a large injection of completely new features and technology. Conquest mode is one of those features that people really loved that will be carried forward to BF2. The Commander mode is an example of a new feature that expands on the Battlefield experience. The battlefield commander can play the battlefield experience in a different way ... he has the ability to see the game map top down and do such things as issue orders to squads, call in artillery strikes, order satellite sweeps, and communicate with his forces via VOIP. All of these activities support a greater set of teamplay activities that players can engage in. The player with the highest rank can be the commander, or teams can decide who will be the commander before the round starts.

Boa ideia no entanto

While not meant to be a hard-core military sim, Battlefield 2 has much richer and more convincing visuals and physics than its predecessors, even at this sneak peek stage. EA parked a bunch of troops and vehicles atop a massive dam/bridge to bomb the hell out of it from various angles of attack. First they drove an ordinary civilian truck through an open tunnel at the base of it, just to show off the industrial architecture; next, an Abrams tank cranked off a few shells at troops garrisoning the bridge, causing many soldier bodies to fly in glorious Havoc-powered physics.

They also called in an F-15-launched missile strike, which -- after a preliminary staged dogfight, which included seeking-missile fire and the dumping of defensive flare/chaff countermeasures to defeat it -- took out sizeable chunk of the dam, thereby also showing off the game's new semi-destructible environments.

GS: What are some of the lessons learned from the feedback from Battlefield 1942 and Vietnam? On the flip side, what can a Battlefield veteran expect to be new in Battlefield 2?

SD: As I mentioned before, if any side isn't fun to play, then the game isn't fun. One of the lessons this translates into for us is balance...in weapons, vehicles, abilities, and maps. If players feel that there is an imbalance, it ruins the experience for them. "Rock-paper-scissors" is [an important concept] for us.

Another lesson learned was that people want to be free to try crazy things. They want to do parachute base jumping off of bridges or stand on the wings of a bomber in flight. They want to be able to stack a jeep full of explosives and use it to destroy an enemy tank.

And Battlefield 2 will offer a lot more to the Battlefield veteran. Players will, of course, be able to play with modern weapons and vehicles, such as wire-guided antitank missiles, laser-guided bombs, and the joint strike fighter. They will also be able to play the game with squads and commanders. These give them some unique tools to help them play together more effectively. These tools include being able to track their teammates, use the built-in voice-over-IP real-time chat to talk to their squads, and even spawn in on their squad leaders' locations when they die. Another great feature is that the game will have built-in tracking of statistics and rankings of all the players worldwide who play on ranked servers. This allows you to build up a history with your player, unlock new weapons, and earn various rewards.

-Road to Rome
-Secret of WWII Weapons

F.E.A.R, Stalker, Call of Duty 2, NFS Most Wanted e muitos outros..
