Three Intel Quad-core CPUs Coming Monday

Intel plans to launch three quad-core processors on Monday, covering two Xeons for lower-end servers and one mainstream model, the Core 2 Quad 6600 for desktop computers. The new Core 2 Quad 6600 processor will run at 2.4GHz with 1066MHz FSB. Also set to arrive are two low-end Xeons, the 2.13GHz 3210 and 2.4GHz 3220. Both are designed for single-processor servers. The chips have 8MB cache and a 1066MHz front-side bus. Intel declined to comment the story, but the three CPUs are expected to show up at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next week.

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 processor, which is expected to be unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in several days,
will cost $531 in 1000-unit quantities, not $850 as previously anticipated, several media reports claim. Its price point will make the quad-core processor just $1 more expensive compared to the current price of Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 chip, which has a bit higher clock-speed.

Nova geração de telecomandos no CES...

ricavision_vista_mce_bluetooth_remote-copy.jpg

ces2007-billgates.jpg
Bill Gates
7 de janeiro, às 19h30
Palazzo Ballroom do The Venetian

ces2007-robertiger.jpg
Robert Iger
8 de janeiro, às 16h30
Palazzo Ballroom do The Venetian

ces2007-michaeldell.jpg
Michael Dell
9 de janeiro, às 9h
Palazzo Ballroom do The Venetian

ces2007-lesliemoonves.jpg
Leslie Moonves
9 de janeiro, às 16h30
Palazzo Ballroom do The Venetian

Toshiba's 55-inch SED TV to be a no-show at CES

Posted Dec 22nd 2006 10:50AM by Darren Murph
Filed under: Displays, Canon, Toshiba, SED

If you had high hopes of seeing Toshiba's "soon-to-be-released" SED TV showcased at CES in just a few weeks, well, you can probably already read the writing on the wall. Unsurprisingly, the set has seemingly hit another snag on its journey to retail reality, as Toshiba has announced that "technical issues" will keep the 55-inch surface conduction electron emitter display from being present at the show. While another delay hasn't exactly been confirmed, in all likelihood there's yet another one behind the scenes, and it could be due to the tension between Canon (Toshiba's partner) and Nano-Proprietary. Reportedly, the two firms are in "closed-door settlement talks" over licensed technology to be used on SED TVs, and the matters at hand could be forcing Toshiba's hand to hold back at CES. Nevertheless, it's a shame we won't be getting up close and personal with the mystical display in just a few weeks, but Toshiba feels that the issue(s) should be "resolved soon," and insinuated that we'd see a demo here in the States before too long.

Proton bringing LED backlit LCDs to CES 2007

Posted Dec 22nd 2006 12:31PM by Richard Lawler
Filed under: Displays, LCD
proton_led_premier_1.jpg

Even though Toshiba's SED technology will be a no show at CES this year, Proton let us know that its LED backlit LCDs will be on display. The last time we saw these HDTVs (the 42-inch 1080p P42L1 and 32-inch 720p P32L1) at Computex they were expected to hit this year but now are slated for a second quarter 2007 release. In case you've forgotten during the long wait for this technology to reach reasonable prices, LED backlighting (like SED) promises more accurate color reproduction than current CCFL-based LCDs.
We'll have to wait until next year to see which one actually delivers.

Hybrid HDD

Gears of war

Of course, Microsoft and Sony will also be busy as they go into the first full year of competition for next-generation video game consoles. Both companies encountered difficulties launching their next-generation consoles. Last year at this time, Xbox 360 shipments dropped suddenly due to an undisclosed supply chain problem (there were alternating reports about DRAM shortages and a GPU design flaw). This year, PS3 shipments are falling short due to a shortage of blue laser diodes used for the PS3’s Blu-ray player. Sony sources and licenses blue laser diodes from Nichia, which itself reported yield problems.
Meanwhile, the Nintendo Wii has, at least in the short term, garnered the most interest in the market despite its weaker graphics and lack of DVD support. For example, the typical dollar premium for Wii consoles being resold on eBay and Craig’s List exceeds that for the PS3 despite lower availability and higher retail prices for the latter. Given this interest and the shipment shortfall for the PS3, Sony may feel pressured to take action. A bold move at CES would be for Sony to lower prices for the PS3. But this move is very risky as iSuppli teardown analysis showed that Sony is currently losing more than $300 per PS3. It is not unusual for console makers to lose money on hardware and offset the loss through licensing and content. But a price cut would make it much more difficult for Sony to earn an overall profit.
Moreover, an update to iSuppli’s teardown analysis of the Xbox 360 suggests that Microsoft may now be breaking even or earning a small margin on Xbox 360 hardware. That position provides Microsoft the option to respond with its own price cuts though rationally Microsoft may not do so since the Xbox 360 already retails for less than the PS3.

Sling to Debut PC-to-TV Box at CES

Friday afternoon at Sling Media’s HQ in San Mateo, we got a look at a prototype for one of the first entrants in the bring-Internet-video-to-the-TV race: The SlingCatcher, a sort of Slingbox-in-reverse that should hit the retail shelves sometime this summer, priced at $200 or less.
Handling it quite literally with kid gloves (OK, they were cotton gloves so he didn’t scratch the surface), Sling’s17 PR director Brian Jaquet lifted the device out of a box and showed it off — with component ports as well as S-video, HDMI and a couple USB ports, as well as Ethernet, the SlingCatcher is ready to sit between your PC and your big screen, to bring those grainy YouTube clips (or maybe something higher definition) to the living room. The unit, about half the size of a basic Slingbox, also has a hard drive on the bottom of the unit, with a USB port for local storage.

Belkin Makes iPod Into Recording Studio

TuneStudio.jpg

This is a bit of a head-scratcher, but Belkin has gone to the trouble of building a mixing board that records music onto Gen 5 iPods (those that support video). The TuneStudio is the first four-channel mixer for iPods, claims Belkin (and we're inclined to believe it, since the idea never even occurred to us). It supports 16-bit, 44-kHz audio, and each channel has a three-band equalizer.
Why you'd want to record your next indie music hit onto an easily losable, low-fi handheld with a fragile hard drive instead of onto a nice Mac or PC computer is a mystery. And if you do, make sure your iTunes is set for manual synching, or else it will erase your precious creations whenever you dock the iPod.

With its unique flying action, dual-wing design and "high-flex" crash-resistant structure, the dragonfly flutters, soars, dive-bombs and glides. The dragonfly revolutionizes indoor flight - it has the ability to take off and land from a flat surface and maneuver in tight spaces. There is a beginner and expert level, depending on your skill level and tail ribbon (included) which helps to restrict flying speed while learning to fly or when navigating tight spaces.

izenMobile's KSMT and KRMA Windows Mobile Phones

izenwm5.jpg

Taking a page from HTC, izenMobile's releasing two similar looking phones—one with a slide-out keyboard and one without. The KRMA has the "smartphone" body (right), which means it's keyboardless, and the KSMT (left, center) has the TyTN/8525 body with the keyboard.
Both devices have Windows Mobile 5 PPC edition, a 400MHz Samsung SC3 2442 CPU, 128MB ROM, 64MB SDRAM, GPS (that's nice), quad-band GSM, EDGE, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 2.0-megapixel camera, microSD slot, and miniSB connectivity. Everything seems to be level with current HTC phones, but having a GPS in a phone with a slide-out keyboard gives izen a one-up for now.

CES 2007: Garmin Nuvi 680 Links Up With MSN Direct

garmin_nuvi_680.jpg

Seems like just yesterday we heard about the Garmin Nuvi 670, and now the company will reveal the Nuvi 680 GPS navigator at CES 2007. It keeps the 4.3-inch touchscreen of its predecessor but now adds the handy ability to receive dynamic content from MSN Direct, something the Nuvi 670 couldn't do yet (contrary to our earlier report).
In addition to giving you real-time traffic reports, that MSN Direct connection lets you call up gas prices, weather conditions and even movie times. Along for the ride is Garmin's user-friendly interface and a "3- to 7-hour" battery life. Garmin will ship the Nuvi 680 sometime in the first quarter of this year for just under $1000

Seagate Boosts Storage Capacity with Laser-based Hard Drives

Spinstand.jpg

You may take them for granted, but hard drives are inside most of our favorite gadgets, from our MP3 players to our DVRs, which is why we envy the folks at Wired who recently got a tour of Seagate's R&D labs. The company is apparently working on new drives that would rely on heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR), which uses lasers to heat the hard drive platter and thus allow more information to be stored in a given area. This kind of technology could have us looking at 3.5-inch drives with a 37.5TB storage capacity. Seagate is also gunning to give flash memory a run for its money with Probe, a non-volatile magnetic-based media that will come in "tiny form factors." More storage capacity in smaller form factors, we say bring it on.

Robot Suit: Fights Paralysis, Not Crime (yet)

inflatable-exo-skeleton.jpg

Matsushita, a company out of Japan, has developed a suit with virtual muscles. While it won't help you lift semis one-handed, it will aid in the rehabilitation of stroke victims suffering from partial paralysis by moving their limbs. Slated for 2009 release, the suit will run about $17,000, but should become cheaper with mass production.
Gizmodo tip: pick one of these up before they hit stateside and no one needs to know the suit isn't powered by nuclear reactions, providing 500 tons of lifting/throwing power. Just try to avoid any real fights
