Compiz 0.8.0 Has Been Released

Compiz 0.8 was branched from master back in November, but only today do we now have the v0.8.0 release of Compiz. Since that point the future of Compiz was called into question and Compiz++ had emerged as a C++ rewrite of Compiz that also brings a separation of the Composite and OpenGL layers, a new plug-in design, and other changes.

It was then decided earlier this month that the Compiz developers would release Compiz 0.8 and then go on to merge Nomand and Compiz++ back into Compiz prior to reaching a 1.0 status. Compiz++ will be merged into Compiz prior to version 0.9.0 while Nomad will follow that. It was also determined around the same time that Compiz Fusion will be dropped.

Now there is a more clear future to Compiz, but today we have the Compiz 0.8.0 release to celebrate. Since the release of Compiz 0.7.8 back in September, Compiz has picked up new plug-in changes, proper GNOME 2.24 support, memory leak fixes, adjustments for KDE 4.2, and a large number of bug-fixes.

The Compiz 0.8.0 release announcement can be found on the project's mailing list. Compiz 0.8.0 will be found in the next round of Q2'09 distribution updates, including Ubuntu 9.04 and Fedora 11.

Here are the minutes of the third Compiz Conference Call, which took place
yesterday, 2009-02-02 :

About Compiz++ :
--------------
Drops multiscreen support, moves rendering out to the plugins side

About the merger :
----------------
We're already one project, we just need to fix the confusion and settle on a
single name : Compiz

Get DNS access to both compiz.org and compiz-fusion.org
Moving bug tracker to one place, close fd.o

Compiz++ / Nomad roadmap :
------------------------
Release 0.8.0 after the name change, merge compiz++, release 0.9.0, bug fix,
release.... merge nomad, release, bug fix ...

Investigate time based releases

Compiz++ / Nomad merge :
----------------------
Problem : no multiscreen support in Compiz++
Possible solution : use a separate instance of Compiz to render the remote
desktop, would allow using Nomad without running Compiz as main wm

GNOME Shell, from a Compiz point of view :
We have a flexible system, we can implement things very fast
Que parece ir de encontro ao que eu disse.

Compiz 0.9 Finally Approaches, Beta Coming
It has been a while since last talking about the Compiz compositing manager with their last v0.8 release coming some six months ago, but in fact things have remained busy and now they are finally approaching the 0.9 release in the coming months. As we reported last year and at the start of this year, Compiz Fusion is being dropped, Compiz++ came about as a rewrite of Compiz in C++ and also separated out the compositing and window management responsibilities, and then it was agreed upon that Compiz++ and NOMAD would merge into Compiz. Well, most of this work is nearing completion and soon the first Compiz 0.9 Beta will be available.

Compiz plug-ins are still being ported over to the Compiz++/Compiz 0.9+ architecture while other plug-ins in the process of being ported are not yet at a feature parity with where they were in Compiz 0.8 and earlier. Compiz 0.9.0 will not be out immediately, but it looks like we are finally getting closer. More information on the status can be found in this Compiz blog post.

Compiz 0.8.4 Released With New Plug-Ins, Etc
Compiz 0.9 still isn't out yet (though it should be coming soon) with its Nomad and Compiz++ integration and Compiz Fusion dropping, but in the meantime Compiz 0.8.4 has been pushed out this afternoon.

Compiz 0.8.4 brings two new plug-ins, many bug fixes, stability improvements, and various KDE4 improvements. Improved between KDE4 and Compiz is window thumbnails are now supported in Plasma window tool-tips, the KDE4 window decorator has been ported to KDE 4.3, and a new Compiz
configuration back-end for KDE4. The new plug-ins found in Compiz 0.8.4 are a KDE4 compatibility plug-in and title bar info.

The Compiz 0.8.4 release announcement with a full change-log can be found on the Compiz mailing list.
