Counter-Strike 1.6 Impressions

With Valve Software' first person shooter Half-Life in its fifth year of release and its mega popular team based mod Counter-Strike in its fourth year of existence, you might expect interest in both games to be waning but you would be wrong as tens of thousands of players are currently playing the mod on thousands of servers as you read this. Even as Valve Software and developer Ritual Entertainment continue to work on the long awaited single player oriented game Counter-Strike: Condition Zero, Valve continues to work on updates to their multiplayer mod. Tomorrow, Valve is scheduled to release the long awaited 1.6 version of Counter-Strike to the public and late yesterday HomeLAN got a chance to briefly play the new version.

For players, the biggest changes in CS 1.6 will be with items that were originally scheduled for their debuts in Condition Zero. Two new rifles will be added in the game, the FAMAS for the counter-terrorist good guys and the Galil for the bad guys terrorists. Both rifles are the cheapest that players will be able to buy in the new version of the mod which should make for some interesting team weapon layouts. By far the most interesting item is the tactical shield for the counter-terrorists. This item is almost purely for defensive as the player holding it can only use a pistol as its offensive weapon and cannot use the pistol when the shield is in full use. However, we found the shield to be very effective in stopping fire and the fact that both the player using it and players who hide behind it are heavily protected from the enemy should make Counter-Strike matches have a new dimension to them.

Along with the new weapons and the new tactical shield, Valve will also release a new map, de_airfield, in the new 1.6 version of Counter-Strike, along with visually revamped versions of two older Counter-Strike maps, de_aztec and de_inferno. In addition, Valve will now support a wide-screen view mode (imagine playing Counter-Strike like you were looking at a DVD movie) and support for widescreen monitors. Even if you don't play the game in wide-screen mode, the game kicks into that visual mode when your players dies and you go into ghost mode mode waiting for the next round to begin.

In addition, the user interface for the mod has gotten a makeover with some Windows-like functionality that should make things like changing video, audio and other options much easier While we didn't get a chance to check it out during our brief playtest, Valve also plans to release a new version of its debut Half-Life mod Team Fortress Classic at the same time as Counter-Strike 1.6.

Valve Software is using the release of Counter-Strike 1.6 as its big test of its next beta version (2.0) of Steam, their broadband content delivery system (although it seems like this version will allow people with a 56k modem to download Counter-Strike 1.6). The Steam client will be the only way to get the new version of the mod. In our playtest, we did have some initial problems with getting Steam to work the way it should but the folks at Valve worked quickly and diligently to fix the problems and get us playing 1.6. The Steam client shows all of the various Half-Life official mods in its Games mode (including Opposing Force, Deathmatch Classic and Ricochet). The client also include the Friend feature which allows people to find and chat with fellow players and join them in games. The Servers feature allows people to find Half-Life based servers without having to start the game first.

While our experience with the 1.6 version of Counter-Strike was very brief, the addition of two new cheap rifles along with the tactical shield for the counter-terrorists will be more than enough to shake up the somewhat familiar tactics for this popular multiplayer mode. We will soon see if players will like or hate this major update to this uber-popular multiplayer mode when it is officially launched on Thursday.

1.6?
meu deus lol
