Dell selling AMD chips. But why?

Dell has quietly started selling processors from Advanced Micro Devices, AMD, that range in speeds from 2.0GHz to 2.8GHz with price tags starting at $219.27 for the Athlon 64 3500+ to $1,102.91 for an Athlon 57-FX. AMD chips are still not available inside Dell PCs, however, is this quiet move a small glimpse of things to come?

On Thursday, Dell reported its third-quarter earnings, which fell to $606 million, or 25 cents per share, from $846 million, or 33 cents per share, a year earlier. Dell ended the fiscal third quarter with $12.3 billion in cash and investments.

So with the loss in the third quarter earnings, Dell could be looking for a way to bring new customers into the fold. "Is this the first step in bringing in AMD systems to the Dell market?" independent analyst Roger Kay asked rhetorically. That will depend on how much Dell succumbs to customer pressure, he then speculated.

Está mesmo a Dell a repensar a sua estratégia? Bem penso que se eles avançarem mais para AMD nunca vão querer separa-se da Intel, talvez tentar o melhor dois dois mundos?


PS - Sei que isto começou a ser discutido no tópico da AMD, até fui eu que postei a noticia, mas acho que merece um novo tópico, estamos a falar sobre a Dell.
 
ja era tempo de mudarem para melhor mas como disses-te dificilmente vao largar assim a intel num instante.

é natural que mantenham as duas pois a amd ainda nao tem a capacidade de produçao necessaria
 
Duvido que mudem. A intel já esteve pior. Agora pode não ter processadores muito interessantes mas está mais perto disso do que estava há alguns meses atrás.
Dentro de alguns meses chegarão ao mercado os "P5" descendentes do P-M e mesmo que não batam os A64 da altura serão com certeza muito mais comptetitivos. A Dell continuará a ter a ter os seus descontos especiais e a coisa ficará em águas de bacalhau.
 
Sim mas agora há um processo judicial a correr, por isso convém ter produtos para "encher o olho" e manter as aparências!
