"Destiny 2" in the Works
Activision Publishing CEO says work has begun on "our next full game release" in the Destiny series.
by Eddie Makuch on November 4, 2014

Today during a post-earnings financial call, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg revealed that development has started on the next "full game" in the Destiny series.

Speaking about the future of Destiny, Hirshberg said: "Work has also begun on future expansion packs, as well as on our next full game release."

A sequel to Destiny is not altogether surprising, given the fact that Activision Publishing has regularly maintained that it has a 10-year vision for the Destiny franchise. According to Activision, Bungie has a Lord of the Rings-sized narrative in mind for Destiny.

In addition, according to Bungie-Activision contract deals that emerged in 2012 called for multiple sequels to Destiny.

Earlier today, we learned that Destiny has 9.5 million "registered users" and that the average player is spending three hours in the game every day.

Activision did not share any further details about Destiny's sequel such as when it will be released or what new content and features it may include.

Asked for further details about the Destiny sequel, an Activision representative told GameSpot: "At Activision we are very pleased at the launch of Destiny and look forward to working with Bungie to expand the universe over the course of our 10-year relationship. We have nothing further to announce at this time."

Kotaku: Destiny 2 delayed beyond planned September 2016 launch

It may help clear things up for players to know this: One of the reasons Bungie has no roadmap is that they may not know exactly what’s coming down the road. Plans for Destiny’s future are constantly in flux. As an example, just last week higher-ups at Bungie delayed “Destiny 2” out of this September, according to people familiar with goings-on at the studio. Although Bungie has not yet announced Destiny 2—which could be called something else to avoid confusion—it was essentially public information that they’d planned to release a new iteration of the game this fall, thanks to a contract leaked in 2012 that revealed the scope of their “ten-year plan” for Destiny. For a long time, Bungie had a schedule of annualized releases that would swap between “full” games (“Destiny Game 1, Destiny Game 2”) and hefty expansions (“Comet 1, Comet 2”). As of last week, that appears to have changed. (Bungie declined to comment.)

But with Destiny, nothing is ever simple. Based on conversations I’ve had over the past few months with people familiar with Bungie, it seems that plans for the game’s future are constantly shifting. At one point, word was that the microtransactions added in October would be cosmetic-only, but soon enough the studio quietly started selling level boosters as well. Bungie’s leadership has also vacillated on what content will launch this year and what they’ll save for Destiny 2, as well as whether near-future content will be free or paid. Even within the studio, people may not be aware of every decision that leadership makes; from what I hear, as of yesterday not everyone at Bungie even knew about the Destiny 2 delay.

One source told me that Bungie has asked the live team—a small group of developers at the studio who regularly come up with these events and other updates for Destiny—to build several new DLC packs over the next year to make up for Destiny 2’s delay. Yet it seems likely those plans will change, too; the live team is small, and that sort of schedule seems as unsustainable as what Bungie tried during Destiny’s first year, which was emotionally and physically exhausting for many on the development team.

Olha, em primeiro lugar, logo no primeiro post desta thread tens "Speaking about the future of Destiny, Hirshberg said: "Work has also begun on future expansion packs, as well as on our next full game release.".

Olha, em primeiro lugar, logo no primeiro post desta thread tens "Speaking about the future of Destiny, Hirshberg said: "Work has also begun on future expansion packs, as well as on our next full game release.".

In January, as we reported earlier this year, Bungie moved its internal target for Destiny 2 from 2016 to 2017. Replacing D2 in this fall’s slot will be Rise of Iron, although it’s not clear what else Bungie will release between then and fall of next year. From what we hear, Destiny 2 was recently rebooted, with Taken King director Luke Smith taking the reins of that project in the wake of a Bungie staff reorganization.

Yea, it's coming to PC. From what I'm told the decision to restructure was made thanks to a major memory ceiling being reached on last gen with regard to the Rise of Iron expansion, which was set to launch in the spring, not fall. Bungie decided to push out D2 since it was behind and needed much more iteration, and took advantage of the Rise of Iron delays to use that as the content stop gap for the fall of this year.

Destiny 2 is being overhauled so that they can build upon it in the future without having to work within the frame work limitations that D1 setup. Right now, the way things play out, we have to introduce playspaces so that players can engage in systems or activities, but it creates a huge barrier that must be overcome on both the networking & design side so, they're going to do more open playspaces that incorporate towns, outposts, etc into more common areas. This means fewer hardlines for areas and having them be gated by menus. Goal is to have players conducting things & making activity decisions while still in control of their character, instead of having to exit out into an activity hub. Think of how in WoW, you hit a button and queue into activities you want to do all while still playing your character.

Major narrative changes are on board for D2. Both in terms of plot direction, pacing & structure. Major focus is going to be on the Cabal & Saturn. Saturn is a playspace is set to be bigger than all of the playspaces currently implemented in the game combined. This is in large part of the scale of playspaces being redesigned, so it'll be both bigger & denser with activities. There's a reason Guardians take the fight to Saturn.

Major changes to the engine are occurring. Their render tech has gone through some major iteration thanks in large part to getting to approach it without having last-gen as a limit. Because of this, they are still undecided what, if any, of Destiny's old content, both in terms of playspace, areas, Strikes & raids, will be available through D2. There is talk in possibly allowing D1 remain as its own client, which flies against how Destiny currently operates, where as the new content renders the old client & content obsolete.

Live team has been going through some iteration so that they may continue to support Destiny with content after a major content drop, but they are stuck between a rock & a hard place. The live team is trying to support a game running on an old engine with its older tools, whereas the bulk of development is on the engine framework & enjoying new tools. Because of this, the Live team is largely handcuffed, so don't really expect a whole lot of post-launch content for D1 in the next year.

However, starting with the launch of D2, we will see far more substantial content dropping in the time between yearly releases, as the game & engine & live team have all been planned to support that going forward. Team is aware that they need more substantial content throughout the year, not just at the end of it.

If they do drop D1 content, it likely won't be permanent - they might reintroduce areas in a more 'D2' fleshed out way. So we might lose temporary access to these places, then regain it or have to fight back for control of it at a later point in the plot. This means we'll get to see older areas or activities through the perspective of the newer content, which also means the older areas might expand considerably by the time we get back to them, since the design goal for playspaces is to now make them both way bigger & way denser with activities.

Edit: New races & factions are planned. No idea on whats happening with regards to classes however. New enemies within factions are also going to be introduced. Take the Sions for the Cabal for example - they are going to get fleshed out in D2.

"Destiny 2 Is Still Coming This Year, Activision Says"

There’s no game I get more questions about than Destiny 2, so here’s a little tidbit for those of you who are desperate for news on Bungie’s next big game: It’s still on track for 2017.

Said Activision in a slideshow attached to their earnings call today: “Full Destiny sequel in 2017 to broaden the franchise’s global reach, which along with follow-on content plans, sets the stage for growth.” In human-speak, that means it’s still planned for this year.

Although some of the folks behind Destiny 2 might crave more time to add content and beef up the game, here’s an interesting bit of news to consider: If Bungie misses this year for Destiny 2, Activision is awarded a hefty chunk of the independent studio’s stock, according to two sources familiar with goings-on at Bungie.

Bungie employees’ stock vesting schedule is also based on game releases, including Destiny 2, which gives them major incentives to get the sequel out this year.

Fans had been worried—mostly thanks to the lack of news—that Destiny 2 might be delayed out of this year, but consider this: with the first Destiny, Bungie started talking too early and wound up showing a number of features and plot points that never actually made it into the final game. This time, they want to avoid those mistakes, which means we likely won’t hear about the game until closer to launch. The roadmap will likely include a Destiny 1 spring update, then a Destiny 2 reveal with a launch this fall.

They’ve got a lot of people on this one: From what I hear, at least three other Activision studios are working on the game in addition to Bungie. Destiny 2 is also coming to PC, and will likely be a total overhaul, so don’t expect to bring your Destiny 1 gear with you.

In other Destiny 2 news, the nonsensical Reddit rumor floating around today (and embarrassingly covered by websites like VG247) is very fake.

Activision Blizzard made over $3.6 billion from in-game content sales in 2016

In-game content sales includes Call of Duty Points, Overwatch Loot Boxes, and more.
