DOOM III: NEW DETAILS!
New info on id Software's breathtaking, scary first-person shooter has emerged!
16:14 Unless vou've been in hibernation for the last week, you'll know all about the thundering storm that id Software's DOOM III created at E3 this year. Everyone who filed in to the title's dedicated booth to see what all the fuss was about came out a few minutes later with their jaws on the floor. It was only a recorded demo on display, but what was seen was enough to turn even the hard-line anti-PC fellows into gibbering wrecks.
New details emerged from US interviews today.
According to the developer, with DOOM III all efforts are being focussed on creating the most terrifying, ultra-realistic single-player experience possible. To this end it has been working tirelessly on the title's environment, which it believes will be key to portraying the game in the way it desires. The developer has bridged the gap between the static element and the object that can be influenced physically by the player, meaning that the familiar environmental rules found in the current generation of first-person shooters have been thrown out the window.
Head coder John Carmack claimed today that the environment is a living entity, almost an enemy in itself, as players progress down a corridor or through a room, never quite sure of what's going to be thrown at them or how objects will react to their presence. This, hopefully, will add bucket-loads to the already tense atmosphere of the game.
Seeing as DOOM III is more of a revisit to the original game than anything else, it comes as welcome news that id has chosen to switch the button-pushing, key-collecting progressive gameplay of DOOM for missions, objectives, and character interaction. Unfortunately it's still remaining vague about guns, ammo and artefacts, probably because they have yet to be finalised, but the developer has hinted that there will be a selection of new goodies and some old favourites to hand, one of which appears to definitely be the BFG. And the chainsaw may well be making its way back too. If it does, expect lots and lots of bloody dismemberment.
Monsters-wise, we're in pretty much the same dark boat as the guns, ammo and artefacts. Again we're being promised some old faces - the Revenant, for example - and new blood, and we've already seen the Imp and the Demon (that's the creature in the bathroom scene screenshot).
No doubt more information will be released soon.
