Well, here are some impressions after about an hour and a half with the game. These probably won't be very valuable to people since other people have already written stuff, but oh well.
So far I am very pleased. I think this is going to be the real deal all-around, even with the stuff they added. Oh, and here's my character! She needs new clothes so she can stop being ugly. :\
- Very, very pretty. And very smooth. The sprites aren't as noticeable as they were in screenshots, at least to me. Once you're actually playing, they tend to blend in.
- Perspective presents a nice median between the old overhead style and DQ8.
- Story is already taking some unexpected twists!
- Visible enemies are not obnoxious like I feared they would be. They work kind of like Earthbound, except not nearly as aggressive. Some don't even chase after you at all.
- Music is 100% Sugiyama so far.
- Battles are pretty quick, though certainly not as fast as DQ4/5 DS. Still faster than 8, though.
- Equipment no longer takes up your characters' inventory spaces. Due to that, we're back to 8 inventory spaces from 12.
- Speaking of menus... they're kind of slow. Not DQ8 NA slow, but slower than every other one... especially the equip menu.
- In place of party talk, there's a general outline of the story so far when you press Y.
- As the Q&A said, barrels/pots/dressers do have contents that respawn periodically. In addition to that, there are blue chests that have random loot and they also get new contents after a while. Don't worry, red chests still seem to have set loot.
- Difficulty is just right, as usual.
- I'm a bit concerned about the number of monsters in battle, as I haven't fought more than three yet... will this be another FF3 DS? I hope not.

Friendly Tokyo retailer breaks street date. Epic RPG obtained in advance.
If you've been following my Twitter, you'll know that I managed to get my hands on Dragon Quest IX just a bit ahead of its Saturday release.
Here are some of the pics I posted in the Twitter feed.
I've only managed to play for a few minutes so far, but here's a quick summary. There are no spoilers in here, but if you're looking forward to DQIX, I'd suggest you avoid reading since the surprise of the experience will be lost.
When you first start up the game, the intro movie and staff roll plays out on the top screen. The video is typical low DS quality, but with the Sugiyama score and fantastic art, it's definitely worth a watch.
Get to the title screen, and you have two options at first: start up the game, and set up Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi setup is just a general setup for your DS. There's nothing game related in there. As previously detailed, all the Wi-Fi connectivity is built directly into the game through Ryudo's Pub and the like.
Selecting to start the game, I was taken to a character creation screen. Creating a character in DQIX is a simple process. You make adjustments in seven areas: gender, body type, hair type, hair color, face type, skin color, and eye color. Each of these offer eight to ten pre set options. It's not as powerful as Level-5's White Knight Chronicles character creation system or even Nintendo's Mii system, but it's simple enough that you can make your own personalized Toriyama character in just a few seconds.
After creation, your character spawns angel wings and floats off into the sky. The game kicks off immediately, with some mysterious dialogue (all text, of course -- there's no voice in DQIX), then a view of the small village of Wolloro. The camera pans around a bit, showing the townfolk leading their peaceful lives, then flies up to reveal two angels -- you, along with Izayal, one of the previously announced characters (Izayal is the bald angel). Apparently, Izayal had asked you to protect the town in his place. He was worried at first, but says that because of your hard work, the people of the town are able to live happily.
Suddenly, Izayal sees something that catches his attention. Rikka, another character introduced by Square Enix before, and her grandfather, are walking to town. A couple of Slimes and a Zuccini emerge from a tree and take cover behind a rock, apparently planning to ambush the two. As guardian angels, you won't stand for that! Izayal leads you in a dash towards the foes.
This first battle gives you a quick sampling of the game's battle system. Not much has changed from the game's Jump Festa showing, it seems. You have exclusive control of your character's menu. Izayal is controlled by the CPU.
Following your quick battle, Rikka and her grandfather make it to town. Rikka, although unaware of your intervention against the enemies, says that their safe arrival was surely due to the protection of the guardian angels. The two are unable to see you.
Izayal and your character zoom off back to the heavens. And that's where I stopped my early play session in order to deliver these impressions.
Stay tuned for more on Dragon Quest IX and its launch, both here and at my Twitter.
Summary:
As you may have heard, a little title called Dragon Quest IX launched in Japan on July 11. There were lines. With the preliminary data in now, it looks like there is a reason for these lines – Dragon Quest IX has set the all time record for weekly video game sales in Japan even though the title was on sale for only two days. Believe it or not, not only is this the top week ever for a video game in Japan, but it is the strongest week one sales ever seen in a single region for a title released on a single platform. The previous record holder was Halo 3 in the Americas, which launched back in September 2007.
Key Trends to Watch:
- How many units of Dragon Quest IX will sell in week two to four? The answer will determine whether the title ends up selling an impressive 4.25m to 5.0m or an even more astonishing 5.0m – 6.0m in Japan alone. Remember – the DS base is 27 million units in Japan.
...
- Hardware sales. With millions of Japanese people buying a single game this week, interest in video games may be reinvigorated significantly in Japan over the short term.
...
DS Software – Nine DS games charted in the preliminary data. Dragon Quest IX topped the chart with the biggest week one opening ever seen in Japan. The game sold an estimated 3,049,000 units, shattering the previous record held by PS1’s Final Fantasy VIII which sold 2,592,000 week one. On a regional basis (i.e. either Americas, Others, or Japan), only three games had ever topped 2.5m units week one. Halo 3, with 2,844,000 units week one was the previous top opening for a game in a single region. Most of those sales were in the United States and Canada – with a population of 330 million or so. Dragon Quest IX topped 3.04m units in a country of 127m. In other words, a game with the same impact in the Americas would have to sell about 7,500,000 copies week one. There is just nothing like Dragon Quest IX in Japan. In distant second place, Tamodatchi Collection rose from last week to 76,000 units on the huge increase in DS hardware sales. Kingdom Hearts 358/2 sold another 10,000 units. Pokemon Platinum, Sloan to Michael and Infinite Route sold between 5,000 and 10,000 units each. Crayon Shin Chan, Taiko Drum Master: Seven Island Advetnure, and Mario and Luigi 3 came in between 2,000 and 5,000 units each. Expect DS hardware sales to rise astronomically due to the July 11 launches of Dragon Quest IX and a new red colored DSi – to 135,000 to 175,000 units for the week.
