Industry Insider Report: Intel Readying Dual-Core Desktop Dothan

It’s a known fact that Intel has failed to deliver a viable desktop solution since it launched its Prescott microprocessor. In addition to delivering a poor and expensive solution, the abundance of technologies with its 915/925 chipsets left the platform at an almost destructive state with memory and motherboard manufacturers frustrated at the lack of sub-par sales.

Though Intel never admitted to the poor architecture it was retailing (which was a smart move), information regarding Intel’s upcoming plans started roaming the Computex show floor this year. After Intel realized the problems it was having, it changed its focus to Dothan. As you know, Dothan is a mobile microprocessor that worked exceptionally well in Asus’ P4C800-E Deluxe board, thanks to its independent socket adapter for socket 478. Numerous users tried out Dothan and it worked exceptionally well.

Finally, it looks like Intel has learned from its mistake and secretly prepping a surprise for the rest of the industry. According to the information we received, Intel is currently working on a desktop, dual-core Dothan microprocessor with SSE3 instruction set that Intel plans to launch sometime in the future. Whether the launch will take place this year or in 2006 is currently unknown.

In addition to the news from Intel, our sources reported that at least one of the tier-one motherboard makers is currently working on a motherboard solution that would support Intel’s upcoming microprocessor. The insider revealed that the solution is expected to be a solid overclocker for those of you who look for such options.

In other words, Intel is working on an answer to its simmering Prescott. Dothan is expected to bring interesting performance numbers from Intel’s side, and Intel may not be too far behind from AMD if that’s the case. Until further details are revealed, all we can do is wait and hope that Intel finally has worthwhile to bring to the market.

Talvez o report seja sobre uma versão do Yonah (futuro PM dual core para portateis) para desktop, mas também pode ser o actual Dothan dual core.

Seja como for, penso que é uma boa decisão por parte da Intel.

Old news?

Um dual core dothan para desktop com SSE3 e com uma marca de boards já a trabalhar nele?

Ok, se assim for, apaguem a thread.

Toda a gente sabia, esse é o Yonah:

"Mobile - Yonah, previously disclosed 65nm mobile-optimized dual-core processor. Expected to ship by the end of 2005 with its official introduction in the first quarter of 2006. Yonah is part of Intel's Napa mobile platform. "

Thanks.

Merom ->mobile
Conroe->desktop

Dothan é o actual single core.

Qd se referiam ao Dothan e não havia aínda codename, chamavam-lhe Banias 2.
