"Today does it exist three competing DVD recording standards:

DVD-R and DVD-RW
DVD-R/W was the first DVD recording format released that was compatible with standalone DVD Players.
DVD-R is a non-rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 88% of all DVD Players and DVD-ROMs.
DVD-RW is a rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 69% of all DVD Players and DVD-ROMs.
DVD-R/W supports single side 4.7 GB* DVDs(called DVD-5) and double side 9.4 GB* DVDs(called DVD-10).
These formats are supported by DVDForum.

DVD+R and DVD+RW
DVD+R/W has some better features than DVD-R/W such as lossless linking and both CAV and CLV writing.
DVD+R is a non-rewritable format and it is compatible with about 84% of all DVD Players and DVD-ROMs.
DVD+RW is a rewritable format and is compatible with about 70% of all DVD Players and DVD-ROMs.
DVD+R/W supports single side 4.7 GB* DVDs(called DVD-5) and double side 9.4 GB* DVDs(called DVD-10).
These formats are supported by the DVD+RW Alliance.

DVD-RAM
DVD-RAM has the best recording features but it is not compatible with most DVD-ROM drives and DVD-Video players. Think more of it as a removable hard disk. This format is supported by DVDForum."

"What is DVD-5, single layer, DVD-9, dual layer, DVD-10, double side? is it 4.7GB or 4.37GB?
DVD-5 is a single layer DVD that stores up to about 4 700 000 000 bytes and that is 4.37 computer GigaBytes where 1 kilobyte is 1024 bytes (4 700 000 000 / 1024 = about 4589843KB / 1024 = about 4482MB / 1024 = about 4.37GB). So why does it says 4.7 GB on the DVDrs? Because they are not using computer GigaBytes, they use standard kilo where 1 kilobyte is 1000 bytes. DVD-R/W and DVD+R/W supports this format.

DVD-9 is a dual layer DVD which can fit up to 7.95 computer GB which many commercial DVDs are using today(a DVD-9 is basicly two special DVD-5s pressed together). DVD-R/W and DVD+R/W does not support this format.

DVD-10 is a double side DVD that stores up to 8.7 computer GB, double side means that you burn on both side on the DVD. DVD-R/W and DVD+R/W supports this format."

um +RW da HP custa à volta de 4.5 € -> 900$
um -RW da Sony custa à volta de 17 € -> 3590$

A HP é a HP...

Virtually every news story about Microsoft joining the DVD+RW Alliance got it all wrong, so allow me to restate a simple fact, lest there be future confusion: Microsoft's decision to join the DVD+RW Alliance does not mean that it is backing DVD+RW exclusively. Instead, the company intends to continue investigating competing (and, frankly, superior) recordable DVD formats, including DVD-R and DVD-RW, for inclusion in Longhorn, the next Windows version. Here's the official word: "Microsoft is a member of many, many standards bodies," a Microsoft representative told me earlier this week. "In joining the DVD+RW Alliance, Microsoft is demonstrating our effort to continually evaluate providing built-in support for writeable DVD and other media formats. As we announced at WinHEC in 2002, Microsoft plans to provide native support for Mt. Rainier (DVD+RW) in the next version of Windows, and we continue to evaluate providing native support for other media formats as well (DVD-RW, DVD-R and others)."

http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1103-807602.html

E estes 2 parágrafos chamaram-me à atenção:

"As for consumer preference, DVD-RW is seen as mainly for people looking to record video and then play it on consumer DVD players. That's because to store new files, the disc must first be erased entirely.

The DVD+RW and DVD-RAM formats are seen as having the upper hand for data storage because they allow people to store and erase files in the same way they can on a hard drive. Spofford said that the software for DVD+RW drives does not yet enable people to randomly store data, but he added that a software patch will be available soon."
