EA cut down copy protection

Electronic Arts confirmed late last week that the PC version of Mass Effect will not be as heavily protected from piracy as the publisher and BioWare originally suggested; the RPG will no longer use SecuRom's automatic re-authenification system.

The system had concerned some gamers, and was certainly among the most heavy-handed anti-piracy measures we've seen. EA have seemingly decided that this might prove too unpopular, and have confirmed that neither Mass Effect, nor later-2008 release Spore, will use the technology.

Instead, the publisher tell us that Spore will authenticate via the web when you first install it, it'll also re-authenticate when you go online or download new content.

Under this new plan, you won't need the game disc in all the time to play, and you'll also be able to install the game on multiple PCs.

More on the games industry's battle with PC piracy as we get it.

Acho bem.
