Our galaxy. Its an awe inspiring, beautiful, vast place; with billions of star systems, planets, moons and asteroid fields just waiting to be explored, and exploited. The triumverate superpowers of the Empire, Federation and Independents dominate their core system volumes and constantly skirmish to outmaneouver one another on their frontiers. Outside their influence, in the vast majority of the galaxy, anarchy reigns supreme and spectacular discoveries await the bold.

Its dog-eat-dog out there – you need to keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.

Whether you want to trade for profit between systems, take part in multiplayer co-op mission alliances, free-for-all group battles and team raids to bring down planetary economies, even tip the balance of power in the galaxy (for your own advantage, of course..), or simply explore the wonders of the galaxy (and who knows what you’ll find out there..) is up to you.

Your second-to-second actions could have you taking the roles of trader, pirate, bounty hunter, leader, team player, opportunistic assassin, grand schemer, and more. You are at the centre of the action any time, any place and any way you choose – each action has a consequence, and influences the galaxy around you.

Starting with a few credits and a basic starship, carve your own path through the richest, largest gaming sandbox ever created, set against a backdrop of raw anarchy, galactic powerplays and intrigue. Do whatever it takes to upgrade your ship’s hull, engines, weapons, defences, cargo hold; constantly improve your capabilities and influence on your journey towards the most coveted rank in the history of gaming - ‘Elite’.

Fight, trade, hunt your way across a giant galaxy of billions of star systems, starting with a basic starship and a few credits. You can make money from trading goods between the many star systems, by destroying pirate ships (and collecting bounty), or even by attacking traders and collecting their cargo (which in turn will get a bounty on your head!). There will be missions too, and exploration. Most people will do some combination of these things. Upgrade your ship and specialise in one activity - have a trader with a huge cargo bay, or use the space for weapons and maneuverability.

Real Freedom - Go where you like, be what you like - pirate, bounty hunter, trader, assassin, or some mix of all of these.

Trade - Buy low, cross dangerous space lanes, evade or destroy pirates en route, then sell high, if you make the journey!

Fight - Take on the pirates or be one yourself

Progress - Get your pilot rating all the way from "Harmless" to "Elite"

Explore - Head out to the far reaches of space and discover amazing sights

And the best part - you can do all this online with your friends, or other "Elite" pilots like yourself, or even alone. The choice is yours... (mais no kickstarter)

Elite: Dangerous screenshots and video are coming, Braben says

Screenshots and video of Elite: Dangerous, the PC exclusive due out in 2014, are coming, David Braben has promised.

The Kickstarter for the game launched this morning with just a logo and a few hundred words from the Frontier boss, who is asking for £1.25 million to fund the project.

This bare bones launch, and Braben's admission that the Kickstarter is "a means of test-marketing the concept to verify there is still interest in such a game that extends beyond the individuals who regularly contact me about the game, and raising the funds to do so", drew some criticism.

Speaking to Eurogamer today, Braben acknowledged this negativity, but insisted the reaction has been “mostly positive”.

“I've replied to a few of the posts on Kickstarter and elsewhere,” he said. “It's mostly positive. As with everything there's been some negativity. You develop a thick skin over time. I know people care. And the fact people care is always a good thing, even when they say, 'oh no, don't do it this way,' or, 'why is it like this?'

“We will put more content on it with time. We didn't want this to be a one shot thing. But that is definitely something we will be doing.”

Elite: Dangerous fully funded with 52 hours to go

Elite: Dangerous, Frontier Developments and David Braben's follow-up to his classic space trading series, has reached its Kickstarter goal of £1,250,000 with 52 hours to go.

If the total tally climbs to £1.4 million by then a Mac version will be released approximately three months after the PC version in March 2014. At £1.5 million an additional 10 playable ships will be added.

A new reward tier has also been added at £25, which grants backers a digital copy of the game upon release along with 500 credits to the game's default starting option. Anyone who already pledged over £25 will receive this bonus.

Elite: Dangerous will have 100 billion star systems

Elite: Dangerous will live up to its precursor’s reputation for truly huge game worlds, David Braben has promised.

Speaking with PCGamesN, Braben said Elite: Dangerous is set in a randomly generated Milky Way with over 100 billion star systems, including our very own Sol.
Each system can have up to 100 objects in it, leading to plenty of opportunities for the player – a “truly giant galaxy of vast numbers”.
Unfortunately, you won’t be able to land on these planets at launch; that feature is coming later. Instead, you’ll be doing a lot of flying around, with Braben saying this aspect of gameplay is more like the original Elite than its successors.

“I think in many respects it’s more comparable to Frontier in terms of the way the galaxy works, that sort of thing. But in terms of the way you fly it’s much closer to Elite. We’re going to have Newtonian physics,” he said.
“But the way that we apply the fly-by-wire layer over the top of makes the combat feel really visceral and seat-of-the-pants, rather than [as in Frontier] jousting at huge distances.”

Braben said Dangerous is set 50 years after Frontier: First Encounters, so kicks off about 3300 AD, and will feature the Thargoids in some capacity.

Elite: Dangerous was successfully Kickstarted and is expected on PC in March 2014 and Mac a few months after that.

Hm..
