emory-Tech and Toshiba develop triple-layer HD DVD / DVD

In a joint project, Memory-Tech and Toshiba today announced that the two firms have developed a one-side, three-layer disc for both DVD and HD DVD formats. The new technology will pave the way to higher capacity hybrid storage on a single disc.

The new disc is an addition to Toshiba's existing DVD TWIN format, which support both DVD and HD DVD storage types. The three-layer discs will allow for either two HD DVD layers and one DVD layer, or two DVD layers and one HD DVD. When configured to the former, close to 35 GB can be stored (30 GB of HD DVD and 4.7 GB of SD DVD). Alternatively, the technology can also accommodate a dual-layer DVD (8.5 GB) and one HD DVD layer (15 GB).

Mas porque é que desenvolveram isso?

Tirando o factor de ser possível, não acho que seja nada prático! Não veleria mais a pena tentar adicionar + 1 camada ao HD-DVD?
E leitores para isso? Já vai ser suficientemente complicado ter um leitor hibrido de hd-dvd e blu ray, quanto mais esse formato.

Sinceramente, não estou a ver qual é uso possível para isso.
 
Valeria a pena caso a camada de DVD normal pudesse ser reproduzida nos leitores DVD normais...
Um pouco como os SACD com camada de CD ;)
 
Um meio de poder ver DVD's HD em leitores de DVD comuns, e vice-versa.
Compras um filme que tem, no mesmo disco, versões HD e "normal" :D

O que é que é melhor q um disco q suporte DVD e HD-DVD? Q tal um disco q suporte DVD, HD-DVD e Blu-Ray?

A patent application has been filed for a disc that would play two competing high-definition DVD formats which, if successful, could help resolve a battle that has divided Hollywood and confounded consumers.

The patent application was filed by three Warner Bros. employees, two of whom are engineers for the company.

The "multilayer dual optical disk" would have one layer of data in the standard CD or DVD format, a second layer able to play one high-capacity format and a third layer for the competing high-capacity format.
