Power Member
Xbox 360 to Add More than 85 Enhancements with the Fall System Update and Raise the Bar for High Definition Interactive Gameplay and Entertainment

The fall update ushers in the 6th generation of Xbox Live, the world's largest online gaming & entertainment network with four million members and growing everyday

Beginning the morning of Tuesday October 31, owners of the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft will be able to download a free system update that will provide more than 85 new features and enhancements, including support for native 1080p games and movies, faster Xbox Live Arcade game list display times and even more choices when it comes to video playback options.

This free update will be distributed via the Xbox Live online gaming and entertainment network to all members (Xbox Live Silver and Xbox Live Gold) with no disc or hard drive required. Gamers without an Xbox Live account can easily sign up for free by connecting their console to a broadband Internet connection. Once online, downloading the update is fast and simple, and provides instant access to features such as:

Expanded HD Display and Video Playback Options
* With 1080p resolution, gamers now have the ability to enjoy both game and video content in the best HD resolution currently available.
* Expanded video playback options increase the ways gamers can enjoy video content on Xbox 360. It is now possible to stream WMV video from a Windows PC running Windows Media Player 11 or Windows Media Connect.
* Gamers can now play video files from data CDs and DVDs, as well as from storage devices like USB 2.0 flash drives and Xbox 360 Memory Units.
* Xbox 360 will support 50hz HDTV display modes, providing viewers greater choice in how they watch DVD and HD DVD content.

Xbox Live Arcade Enhancements
* Keeping up to date on Xbox Live Arcade games is now even more convenient with the ability to automatically download newly released Xbox Live Arcade trial games. This eliminates the need to manually search for new downloads on Xbox Live Marketplace each time a new game trial is released.
* Fast enumeration of games: you'll see the games in your Xbox Live Arcade collection appear almost instantly. Get in and play right away.
* With so many games to choose from, Xbox Live Arcade added new sorting options such as "Recently Played" and "By Category." These enhancements make managing Xbox Live Arcade collections faster and easier than ever.
* A new expanded Friends Leaderboard within Xbox Live Arcade allows gamers to compare themselves directly against their friends and view leaderboard details of their top 10 friends.
* A new expanded Achievements View within Xbox Live Arcade lets gamers view their full Achievement details for their Xbox Live Arcade games including descriptions, icons, allotted Gamerscore and more, right from the Xbox Live Arcade dashboard interface.
* The "Play Now" launch feature has been streamlined. Selecting "Play Now" after downloading a game in Xbox Live Marketplace now bypasses Xbox Live Arcade and takes you directly to the game.
* Xbox Live Arcade now offers a "Tell a Friend" feature. Select this option from the game info screen to send any friend on your friends list a message telling them about the Xbox Live Arcade game.

XNA Support
* Amateur game designers will be able to test and play the games they create using XNA Game Studio Express on their Xbox 360 systems when it launches later this year (separate download and subscription required).

These features and enhancements are just some of the improvements gamers can expect as part of the fall update. For a complete list of updates, visit http://www.xbox.com/live.

Microsoft is committed to providing Xbox 360 customers with the best online experience possible and delivering added value to Xbox Live Gold subscribers. Those subscribers will enjoy exclusive early access to special Xbox Live Marketplace content, such as game demos, free game add-ons, free community videos, and free gamer pics and themes for up to one week in advance of their general release. Paid downloadable content remains available at the same time for both Xbox Live Silver and Xbox Live Gold subscribers.

Through these regular updates, the way gamers are connected to their friends and entertainment is constantly evolving and improving. With more than 4-million Xbox Live members to date, Xbox 360 has proven itself as the premiere gaming platform of choice.

Grandes novidades :)

The Xbox 360 November '06 Fall Update is heading your way

TEAMXBOX

The Xbox 360 November '06 Fall Update is heading your way

Hello everyone,

Wow, only 5 months have passed since we first posted about the Spring update. The release process never seems to slow down but as tired as we all are, I’m still excited to be talking about our third major update to our system software for Xbox 360. Later tonight (or early in the morning depending on your location) the November ’06 update will go live and with it you will get to see the work we’ve put in over the last 5 months.

Coming out of Spring we looked really hard at all the feedback each of you provided. We are always listening to our Product Support people. We dissected the replies from Major Nelson’s blog and of course we review the feedback from the Xbox.com forums. In addition we are all gamers, and we are passionate about making our product better. This will be the third evolution of our system software and with it I’m super proud of what we’re delivering. I’m hoping that you guys will be too.

Back in my original post from June I explained the concept of ‘Your Games, Your Friends and Your Lifestyle’. This is still something we pivot around in our planning for Xbox 360 and it provides a good framework to talk about some of the changes we’ve made with this release.

For Your Games, we invested heavily in enabling new experiences. The Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel is an awesome accessory and we worked around the clock to make sure that there was support in the system for this cool new experience. Wireless is where it’s at in the Next-Gen and this is why we’re excited to also provide support for the Xbox 360 Wireless Headset as well. People loved not being tethered to the console with their controllers before, now they can be totally wire free when online with their friends using the new Wireless Headset. And they can be wireless to their console when tearing up the laps using the new wheel.

Here on the 360 Team we all love Xbox Live Arcade and from all the downloads of games we know you do as well. The Arcade team did an amazing job in improving their part of the dashboard this release. Being able to auto-download new titles….seeing your friends scores from the Arcade page….improving the enumeration speeds, are all part of the improvements in this area. We’re really proud of how well Arcade has done since launch but now we get to look forward to the games you guys may create via XNA Express. We worked closely with the XNA team to ensure support was in this release for developing your own games and running them on a retail Xbox 360 console. I’ve seen some of the really cool games being developed on XNA Express that have just blown me away. Enthusiasts and hobbyists around the world have been anxious to develop games on a next-gen console, and now they can.

For Your Lifestyle, we decided to focus heavily on video with this release. One of the ‘loudest’ feedback items we heard over and over was around not being able to stream videos unless you had a Windows Media Center Edition PC. I can’t even begin to count how many conspiracy theories there were around why this limitation was in place. With this update we can now dispel all those theories. We are now streaming videos from your XP / Vista PC and you can even play them back from USB 2.0 drives or data discs if you’d like. I know we are going to get a lot of feedback on the codec support we provided with this release. Let me save everyone the trouble….we know that WMV is not the only video format out there….we know that people want more choices…. and we know folks will want other codecs like H.264 / Mpeg4 / Divx / etc. Our approach from launch day last year is that we listen to constructive feedback and while I can’t promise anything for the future, I can promise that we will listen and will improve our system software over time. Some things are just not doable because of legal or licensing issues, but where possible we really try to drive new digital entertainment experiences for your lifestyle. Additional codec support is already something we’re thinking of for the future.

In addition to the streaming video support, we spent a huge amount of time getting the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player support baked into the system. I’ve been playing movies on my final production HD DVD unit and I’m amazed at the picture quality and interactive features built into the HD DVD movies. I hope everyone else gets a chance to the player out. Once you’ve gone HD, you just can’t go back!

We also worked closely with our co-workers in Zune to make sure the experience with a Zune device is handled really well on the Xbox 360. We expect that streaming videos, music and pictures will be popular with folks and I look forward to increasing the support between the two devices. Also with the Zune software on your PC you can stream AAC encoded files to your Xbox 360, something that wasn’t possible prior to this release.

With this release out the door, we’ll take a step back, collect our breaths and start to get ready for the next one. Post your feedback because we love to hear about how you’d improve and make this system better. We believe that incredible software and world class services are what make us stand out in this next generation. Your feedback guides us on what to improve or add.

Now it’s time to find some time for in-depth ‘product testing’ on some of the new games coming out. I’ve had a chance to play the final version of Gears of War and Viva Pinata, and both of them are amazing. I’m really looking forward to Rainbow Six: Vegas, as I had a chance to meet the dev team and help them integrate the Xbox Live Vision into the game about 11 months ago.
Below is the full feature list of changes with this release.

Ainda agora diz o update ao saint row :)

Saints Row product update on its way

Volition's announced an update to Saints Row that will remedy some of the problems you've encountered in the game, as well as remedy the issues that plagued multiplayer games. Heck, we even get extra hairstyles.

They've yet to announce the exact time when the update will be up on Xbox Live, but the developer's website said they'd be giving people notice "later today." One note though. You will need to update your game with this download if you want to play on Xbox Live. That being said, you can review the changes below and after the jump and watch out for its release on Live. Enjoy!

Added player options to enable v-sync during cutscenes and/or gameplay, with warning that it will affect framerate.

Gostei desta feature do update do Saint-Row, qualquer jogo devia ter esta opção, no fundo, the power of choice...

Transcode360 Update: Streaming from non-MCE, Transcode 360 v1.0 and more

Transcode360 Update: Streaming from non-MCE, Transcode 360 v1.0 and more

The Fall Update
I'm of course referring to Microsoft's latest dashboard update (and not this long overdue post!). Those of us hoping for a wider range of video formats will have been disappointed to find that the streaming media enhancements on offer are limited to WMV over Windows Media Player 11 and Windows Media Connect.

I should point out that non-MCE computers will not be able to take advantage of transcoding solutions (including Transcode 360(info)) until developers can figure out how to 'plug-in' to Windows Media Player 11 and/or Windows Media Connect. Though if Microsoft is using a standards based UPNP implementation (which I believe it has with respect to music and photos), then I would expect someone to knock up a transcoding solution not too far down the line - that someone though, is unlikely to be me.

You'll have noticed that since Beta 4 I've been updating the site less frequently. While I'm keen on my 360 and software development in general, my priorities have changed with the happy discovery that I'm going to be a Dad very shortly! I will no doubt still find the time to dabble/tinker about with XNA and Media Center stuff in general, but likely not to the same extent I could in my XboxMediaCenter(info) hay day.

So what of T360, My Movies and Vista? In the run up to Xmas I'll be tidying up the code, versioning (releasing a 1.0 final build) and updating the publically accessible subversion source code repo here. I'm definitely open to offers of help managing the forums, and if there are any keen C# developers out there I would consider handing over the reins (I'd need to evaluate a patch/diff submission to get an idea of aptitude etc.).

There is finally a beta build available on the My Movies website (forums) which can be evaluated. My Movies does not include T360, you need to install both. When My Movies is running over an Extender (e.g. 360) it will detect that T360 is installed and offer you the option to stream the movie from within the My Movies interface.

A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to replace my production Media Center 2005 build with Vista with the view of doing some T360 development/testing. Unfortunately I encountered a number of hardware compatibility issues with my setup which meant that I had to revert to MCE2005. I'm still very keen to put together an easy to install Vista-friendly build, and with some help from the forum regulars I plan to get this done around the same time as 1.0 (i.e. before the end of year - OK I hope to get it done a lot sooner, but I'm giving myself plenty of slack!).

In winding down the project, I want to thank all of you guys for your support over the past months, its been fun working on this project and I'm thrilled that its been a help to so many folks. If past experience is anything to go by, it won't be too long before I get the itch to cut some code and spin up another project, I just need to find the elusive secret to balancing work, family life and homebrew; if anyone has any insights please let me know!!

The new Windows Media Encoder Studio Edition allows VC-1 (Mpeg4 Advanced) encoding:

So it does support the HD-DVD codec, VC-1, unlike some of you were saying :-P

'Unlike earlier versions of the Windows Media Video implementation, VC-1 is transport and container independent. This provides even greater flexibility for device manufacturers and content services.'

Fall update bricking lots of 360s [Updated]
Posted in Xbox 360, Hardware, Xbox Live by Curry on November 1st, 2006 at 12:00

November has barely begun but Microsoft has seemingly already won the Screw-up of the Month award. Yesterday’s big Fall Dashboard Update does a lot of good things to your 360, like 1080p support and WMV streaming. And it does some bad things, like reducing a lot of Xbox 360s to 4kg paperweights.

Update 13:29: Xbox Support is currently stating if you call them that a fix should be out within 2 days to solve the problems. For possible resolutions they’re suggesting meanwhile check this forumpost. Still no official word from Microsoft via the regular channels.

As our Dutch friends at Fok! Games have discovered, there seems to be a fatal error in the latest update causing recently purchased or replaced Xbox 360s to die on their owners (translated and summarized for your reading pleasure):

When you do the following with your new Xbox 360 you will be getting a fatal and permanent “System Error”. That means you should not do this!
Boot the console.
Select the language.
Select “I am a member of Xbox Live”
Mandatory dashboard update will download and install.
The system will reboot and show the 360 logo.
You’ll get “System Error E71″.

When you get this error the 360 is dead and cannot be revived anymore: you will need to take it back to your store for replacement or contact Xbox Customer Support.

The administrator of Dutch games site Insidegamer has reported this happening to his own 360, but the complaints are found on many forums such as the TeamXbox forums. Until more news is released on this from Microsoft, we suggest using an offline profile if you’ve bought your 360 recently and haven’t connected it to Live before.

In possibly related, or just as possibly entirely unrelated news, Xbox-Scene is reporting that Xbox 360s with a combination of certain Toshiba-Samsung TS-H943 DVD drives and certain hacked firmwares have been bricked by the update, this time giving an E66 System Error. Confirmation of this is abundant on the scene forums, and those in the know have already found out that restoring the original firmware will at least fix the problem, and accounts nor console is banned from Live after the repair.

Both situations seem to be unrelated to our previous report about people getting banned from Live because of their console incorrectly believing it was modded. Reports suggest though that the system’s problems in both cases are entirely related to the DVD-drive and which firmware version it is using. Whether this means Microsoft is actively seeking out modded firmwares and screwing up big time on the detection or on the actions to be taken is anyone’s guess.

We’re looking forward to Microsoft’s explanation, and will report the minute we hear more about this. Meanwhile we wish those currently owning a $400 paper weight the best of luck with resolving their problems hopefully as quickly as possible.
