With a multiyear contract and an intention to push Cell into a number of imaging-related fields, Mercury Computer Systems becomes the first big win for STI.

In a strong indication of Cell's potential beyond the consumer electronics space, IBM has signed Mercury Computer Systems as it's first outside customer for Cell. With a multiyear contract to develop custom computers and workstations around the chip, targeted industries at this time include medical imaging, seismic analysis, and the defense industry. And though the initial projects all seem to center around imaging of one form or another, Mercury Computer Systems is so confident in the Cell's abilities that they are currently investigating applications as divergent as avionics equipment for future fighter aircraft.

Says Mercury CTO Craig Lund: "This will be the exact same chip as in the Playstation."

Industry analyst Richard Doherty was quoted by Reuters news service as saying that this customer announcement by IBM might be the first of several in the coming months, with useage outside of the Playstation 3 console possibly exceeding the 80-100 million units expected to ship through that channel. An example of another potential customer at the moment is audio industry poster child Bose, which is designing a future suspension system for the automotive industry and looking at Cell as the possible brains of the system.

Though there is a long way to go before anyone will be able to judge whether Cell can be successful outside of the console industry, it seems that with this announcement the first step has been taken.

O Cell a ser comercializado fora da PS3 :)
