Report: First PS3s Made for Europe
Sony Computer Entertainment's European boss says that the initial PlayStation 3 manufacturing run will be comprised of European PAL units.
In an interview with Next-Gen.Biz' Euro media partner MCV, SCEE president and CEO David Reeves said, “I hope we will be day and date with US and I hope that we’ll get the same quantities as US as well. I don't think we’ll be disadvantaged. In fact I believe the first PS3s being manufactured are being made for Europe – which is a first."
In the past, Europe has been an afterthought for software and game hardware manufacturers. The European PS2 launched about a month after the North American release, and nearly nine months after Japan. Sony is planning to change this with a simultaneous worldwide PS3 launch in November.
Even though Europe seems to be getting some of the first PS3s off the line, exactly how many will be allocated to the region remains uncertain.
“Between November 17th and December 31st we'll hope to put them in as many European territories as we can, even if we have to place small seed quantities on day one," Reeves said.
Reeves also commented on the console's hefty price tag, saying that it's "actually a steal," when you take into consideration the high price of dedicated Blu-ray players and the PS3's gaming capabilities.
