Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse Preview

    3DO is something of a whipping boy in this industry. They have a (deserved) reputation for putting out mediocre games well before they're ready (if they'll ever be ready) to hit store shelves. But I believe in giving the benefit of the doubt; when I first heard about Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, my interest was piqued by the news that famed and extremely talented comic artist Simon Bisley would be handling the main character designs, and that they intended to give it a respectable development cycle before kicking it out the door. After seeing the game in action at their "Editors' Day," I feel that this was the right reaction, and I think there's a good chance that 3DO will finally be vindicated in the eyes of both the press and gamers.

    Goth Gaming

    In the wake of popular franchises in games and movies like Blade and Devil May Cry, it's pretty apparent that fast action with a demonic bent is near and dear to the hearts of a lot of people. These titles blend stylishness with an unambiguousness of purpose and plenty of justice -- which feels pretty comforting in today's world, doesn't it? In Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, you're playing as an outcast angel called Abaddon in a battle against the supreme powers from the Book of Revelations, trying to prevent the final days from coming.

    Abaddon is an angel that isn't wanted in Heaven or Hell; he's a dark figure, with scraggly hair and a black trench coat, and definitely looks more comfortable crawling the gritty New York streets than it seems he would be in an ethereal paradise. He's assisted in his journeys by "the Chosen," a group of human warriors culled from, well, the dregs of society -- a serial killer, a young prostitute, and a corrupt politician -- making him look pretty swell. When you're desperately trying to prevent the end of the world, you take your help when you can find it, obviously.

    Thanks to Simon Bisley's talented hand -- hey, I'm not a comics fanboy, but I can recognize quality -- the characters are extremely evocative and the production artwork looks great. In the game, they help bring the world of Armageddon to life; of course, they're assisted by extremely competent artists that have brought their sensibilities to the game and filled it full of disturbing, chilling imagery.

    The Stink of Death

    At the event, I couldn't get enough of one of the environments: a blood-soaked hospital. I have a taste for the macabre, and was particularly impressed that the smeared, dried blood was faintly brownish while the puddles of fresh gore were rose-red and reflective -- and if Abaddon walks through 'em, he leaves a trail.

    The other environments on display were similarly detailed, and chock full of human suffering. The Castle of Famine, for example, was full of creepy carvings and dead, tortured human bodies strung from hooks in the ceiling. This is not a cheerful game; it's oppressive. In the words of the 3DO representative demoing it for me, "We want you to really hate these guys," referring to the Horsemen. With sights like that, mission accomplished.

    There are still, unfortunately, scant details on the gameplay. What we do know is that Abaddon has both guns and swords at his disposal. Sure, he looks like Dante and quacks like Dante -- but from what I've seen the combat in the game seems a bit more methodical and tactical than the frenetic action of Devil May Cry. Even more lamentably, there were almost no details on just how the Chosen would help you out during the game -- although I was assured that collecting them for your battle against evil isn't purely for plot reasons. They'll follow you around, and their abilities will help you surmount obstacles -- beyond that, we just don't know yet.


    Beyond the graphical and art prowess of the game, attention is being further paid to both the look and feel of the game with the judicious application of Hollywood talent. On the voice end, we've got Traci Lords, Lance Henriksen, and Tim Curry voicing characters -- sort of the A grade of B stars who are habitual offenders on the video game circuit. No complaints there. Motion-capture choreography is being handled by Smashcut, who've been involved with great films like Fight Club, The Matrix trilogy, and The Crow. They were also involved in Dead to Rights, though, so it's clear that their touch on a game does not necessarily turn base metal into gold.

    If I am struck by anything about Four Horsemen, it's definitely the mood. I'm so looking forward to finding out how this game turns out; while as a rule I don't particularly go crazy for action and adventure games, I'm up for anything that has a great hook. Like Sony's Primal, a bit of macabre, modern-day fantasy does the job. What the success of Four Horsemen will come down to is if 3DO's new attention to detail and commitment to quality will make a difference in the final game. Can they turn heads with it? I think they already have.

    Let's hope it is, in the end, for the right reasons -- it's clear that a lot of developer attention is being paid to quality, but unless the gameplay matches up it'll just be another in a string of embarrassments. I am eager to see that not be the case, as I'm really intrigued by what they showed off. Here's to hoping that the E3 version will bring high-quality playability to the equation, cleaving doubts from expectation.
