NVIDIA cancels 8800 GTS 512MB OC models

Apparently NVIDIA has forbidden it's board-partners to sell any more pre-overclocked GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB cards according to a source at the Dutch Tweakers.net forums.
We (Guru3D) have spoken a couple of board partners and although they are not too frenzy on acknowledging this, it seem to be correct. Current batches of "OC" models are allowed to be sold yet the new batches to be released on February 2008 may be sold only at default clock frequencies.
While it's not very clear what the precise reason for this action, it is clear that the OC models perform just as well as a 8800 GTX and close to the Ultra, which will go EOL (end of life) in ... February 2008. It makes sense to assume that board partners are only buying the 8800 GT & GTS cards right now opposed to the GTX & Ultra thus this would leave NVIDIA with a serious overstock issue. Ehm NVIDIA, why not make the GTX & Ultra cheaper ? Or is there an issue with the actual G92 that NVIDIA refuses to disclose ?

A explicação é simples:

BFG Releases the 8800GTS OC2 512MB Water Cooled Edition

Gainward 8800GTS 1GB GLH Review

The G92 is a well know NVIDIA chip, the latest added to NVIDIA's lineup, first in the form of G92-112, a cut down version in 8800GT, and then a few weeks later in 8800GTS 512, as a full G92 with 128 shader processors. In a normal GTS card, its core clock is 650 MHz, and Gainward's card operates at 730 MHz. It seems quite a lot, which it is. Still, it has to be said that any stock 8800GTS can reach this clock, and we have seen a few pieces to reach 850 with no additional cooling. The shader clock is increased from 1625 to 1825, and the memory now operates at 1050 MHz, which is just a little less than the 8800Ultra (1080 MHz). When you combine that with 50% more bus width in Ultra's favor, this card still lacks the necessary memory throughput really dethrone the Ultra. Of course, there is the issue of only 16 ROP units in the G92, which is also one of the reasons that G80 is still the flagship.

Gainward's card also has a custom designed cooling solution, which is more efficient than the original design. There is also a back panel that serves as a memory cooler, because half of the memory chips are on the card's backside. The PCB is standard Gainward red, unlike the green NVIDIA PCBs.

Overclocking
Maximum stable frequency for the core was 860 MHz, and memory went up to 1130 MHz. Those are superb results, which shows us that Gainward has handpicked these chips to be used on these cards. The cooler is quite capable to cool the card very pleasantly to your ears even at such high clocks.
