Nvidia Corp., the world’s largest provider of discrete graphics processors, said at a press conference that it plans to launch its next-generation graphics processor this Summer. The new product code-named GT200 is projected to dethrone the current flagship GeForce 9800 GX2, but it is not clear whether it will also bring new features.

The new graphics processing unit (GPU) for high-end market from Nvidia is projected to consist of about one billion of transistors and feature “around” 200 unified shader processors (more likely to be 192 or 240), reports Golem.de web-site citing Jeff Brown, general manager of the professional solutions group at Nvidia. It is unclear whether Nvidia GT200 sports DirectX 10.1 feature-set or are compatible with DirectX 10 only.

Nvidia’s latest high-end GPUs, which are code-named G92 and G80, consist of 754 and 681 million of transistors, respectively. The previous-generation high-end DirectX 9 graphics chips – G70 and G71 – featured 304 and 278 million of transistors, which means that the current generation high-end chips are more than two times larger compared to predecessors in terms of transistor count. Considering these facts, one billion of transistors inside GT200 is not a surprise.

The new-generation Nvidia GT200 is projected to be released in Summer and Nvidia will start to brief the media about the product starting from May, the web-site reports without providing any additional details.

It is also not known whether Nvidia plans to continue using the GeForce brand-name for GT200, or intends to introduce a new trademark.

Nvidia’s GT200 Set to Be Unveiled in Summer

NVIDIA GT200 MORE INFORMATION

We already reported some information about the characteristics of video card NVIDIA GT200, which will appear at the end of the current block .

Today we can describe the quantity of basic functional units in GT200 chip , since precisely these characteristics will determine the advantage value of this new chip over predecessors. The first forecasts speak, that GT200 will be approximately two times faster than G 80.

The quantity of stream processors in GT200 chip will be equal to 240 pieces. For comparison, g92 chip has 128 stream processors . The number of stream processors was almost doubled ( by 193.3 %). G92 chip had 8 clusters on 16 (8+8) stream processors each, and GT200 has 10 clusters on 24 (8+8+8) stream processors each. So the number of stream processors in GT200 chip reaches 24 X 10 = 240 pieces.

Accordingly, certain cheaper products on base of GT200 chip can obtain a lowered number of stream processors, decreased with 24 pieces step . For example, 216, 192, 168 or 144 pieces. The quantity of textural blocks in one cluster GT200 will grew from four to eight, in comparison with G80. GT200 chip in the maximum configuration can possess 8 X 10 = 80 textural blocks.

The quantity of (ROP) blocks will also grew : from 24 pieces in G80, 16 pieces in G92, and 32 pieces in GT200. The memory system bus in GT200 chip will be 512- bit. In this case video card will be equipped with GDDR- 3 memory , which in its best versions operates at 2200 MHz DDR frequency.

GT200 will also get some architectural innovations. It is assumed that directX 10.1 support will appear .

Fonix... gente rica é outra coisa :o

The announcement period of RV770 and GT200 chips is June or July. If GT200 will be one chip product, then on base of RV770 will be created the successor of two-chip radeon HD 3870 X2.

Associate reports that the announcement of GT200 was initially planned for late autumn in the present year and now NVIDIA can accelerate the release of this product in case of early and successful RV770 announcement . GeForce 9800 GTX and GeForce 9800 GX2 Video card will be soon removed from production.

AMD and NVIDIA will show video card models the base of RV770 and GT200 chips during exhibition computex 2008, ( June ).
