Huawei P40 unveiled with 50MP camera, P40 Pro adds 90Hz panel, 5x tele cam

It's that time of the year again - Huawei and its partner Leica are starting a new chapter in smartphone photography. The smartphone manufacturer also did much to improve the hardware on the front of its P40 flagships and it hit a new milestone in wireless charging speeds.

Huawei P40 Pro

The Huawei P40 Pro takes inspiration from both the P30 and Mate 30, but surpasses them both in terms of features. Huawei's usual drive to perfect the camera is as strong as ever, but this year the company did much to improve the screen as well.

gsmarena_003.jpg

It calls it an "Overflow Display" with four curved edges, all sides sweeping down to the frame of the phone. Another notable change is move away from the wide notch and towards a smaller (if not really "small") pill-shaped punch hole. It houses the 32MP front camera (capable of 4K @ 60fps video capture), which finally has autofocus - we think that's vital for good quality selfies.

gsmarena_108.jpg

The 6.58" OLED panel supports 90Hz refresh rate. Its resolution is 1,200 x 2,640px. The P40 Pro features an in-display fingerprint reader that's 30% larger than before, so it's easier to hit (it's also faster). There's also an infrared face scanner on the front as an alternative method to secure payments.

The best feature on the Huawei P40 Pro is its camera hardware. The main camera features a 1/1.28" sensor - larger than even the Galaxy S20 Ultra's 1/1.33". It has 50MP resolution and a RYYB color filter. Huawei promotes Octa Phase Detection AF, which means that 100% of pixels support phase detection autofocus. The optics include Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and an f/1.9 aperture.

Huawei retains the periscope design for the zoom camera from the P30. Its focal length is 125mm and has a 12MP RYYB sensor and OIS. Huawei labels this "5x zoom" but these can get a bit confusing, so focus on the millimeters instead.

We're not done yet. The ultrawide angle Cine Lens camera has a 40MP sensor and an 18mm f/1.8 lens. Also on the back is a 3D Time of Flight (ToF) sensor, along with a color temperature sensor.

gsmarena_102.jpg

P40 Pro's videography skills include 4K @ 60fps video capture. The Super Steady Telephoto Video feature is available to enhance the OIS. The ultrawide camera can shoot HDR videos and can boost ISO up to 51,200 in the dark. The phone can go slow with 4K time lapses and fast with 7,680fps slow-motion videos.

The Huawei P40 Pro is powered by a 4,200mAh battery. It matches the 27W wireless charging speeds of the Mate 30 Pro. The phone can also charge at 40W over USB-C as well.

P40 Pro's is dust and water resistant (IP68) and will be available in several colors: Black, White, Silver and Gold.

The Huawei P40 Pro will be available from April 7 starting at €1,000 with 8GB of RAM and 256GB storage. Storage is expandable, but you'll need to use Huawei's new NanoMemory 2 cards. Even though those cards take up one of the SIM slots, you can still have two lines active as the P40 phones contain an eSIM.

While you wait, you can check out our full Huawei P40 Pro review. As you can imagine, the camera section is particularly interesting.

Huawei P40

Huawei made a choice about the size and shape of the screen on the Pro and not everyone will love it. The Huawei P40 serves as an alternative that costs less to boot. In previous years the non-Pro model always felt like the clumsy sibling that few people like but the P40 may change that.

It's more compact thanks to its 6.1" screen, the OLED panel is all flat (the glass above it is beveled, though). It has 1080p+ resolution, so it's close to the Pro in terms of sharpness. However, it misses out on the high refresh rate and offers only the standard 60Hz.

gsmarena_010.jpg

The main camera on the back is the same 50MP "Ultra Vision" module with the extra-large 1/1.28" sensor. The selfie camera has a 32MP sensor and but loses the autofocus feature (it is still capable of recording 4K video at 60fps). There's no IR face scanner on the front, but the phone does have that larger in-display fingerprint reader.

The zoom camera has an 80mm lens with OIS and an 8MP sensor, the ultrawide camera uses a 16MP sensor and 17mm lens. These are basically the same specs as the P30 and Mate 30 tele and ultrawide cameras.

gsmarena_101.jpg

Like the Pro, the Huawei P40 is powered by a Kirin 990 5G chipset. Besides the integrated 5G modem, this chip also has the advantage of the 7nm+ EUV process (the 990 4G is built on an older 7nm process). However, the Pro model has a 4 layer SuperCool system (graphene film + vapor chamber), which the vanilla P40 lacks.

gsmarena_008.jpg

gsmarena_009.jpg

The vanilla model has basic protection from dust ingress and water splashes, IP53.

The battery is somewhat smaller with 3,800mAh capacity and it's missing wireless charging altogether, relying only on 22.5W wired charging.

The Huawei P40 will cost €800 when it launches on April 7, there's only one memory configuration available - 8GB of RAM and 128GB storage. Again, you can add more storage if you get a NanoMemory 2 card.

We took the Huawei P40 for a spin, check out our hands-on review for more details.

Software

Huawei is launching its new phones with Android 10 and its AppGallery. Today, the company announced new features and partnerships to expand its software platform and replace much of the Google-provided ecosystem.

MeeTime is a an voice and video call app with screen-sharing. It can also serve as a video streaming platform for other products, e.g. drones and action cameras, and apps (so it can be used for customer support, for example).

gsmarena_115.jpg

Celia is the new voice assistant that supports English, French and Spanish. It can handle anything from basic tasks (e.g. adding reminders, making calls) to AI-powered features like AI lens and AI touch shopping.

Huawei partnered with several companies (including TCL) for a Google Cast-like protocol. It also developed a system for simple wireless content sharing between devices. Onehop simplifies first time connections.

The Huawei P40 Pro+ ups the ante with two telephoto cameras and 40W wireless charging

The Huawei P40 Pro+ is the Pro model dialed up to 11. The biggest improvement is to the zoom cameras (yes, plural), but Huawei also hit a new benchmark in wireless charging.

gsmarena_998.jpg

The plus model uses a periscope lens with a focal length of 240mm, almost twice as long as the one on the P40 Pro (125mm). It's backed by an 8MP image sensor and feature OIS. That's the longest lens on mobile yet, but Huawei had to craft a unique design to achieve it:

gsmarena_110.jpg

The Pro+ has an additional telephoto camera - 80mm lens - to bridge the gap between the extreme telephoto and the regular camera. This gives you more flexibility and allows you to capture high-quality photos at various distances.

The P40 Pro+ is the first phone to achieve 40W wireless charging. We've seen prototypes from competitors, but Huawei is the first to make it official. Wired charging for the 4,200mAh battery is 40W. Reverse wireless charging is supported, of course.

gsmarena_111.jpg

The phone uses the same Kirin 990 5G chipset with 8GB of RAM as its siblings, but comes with more storage - 512GB is the only option.

Huawei also upgraded the phone's exterior, which is made out of durable ceramic - it's as tough as sapphire says the company. It needs 5 full days in the kiln to form properly and is machined with a special cutting head to achieve some of the tighter curves of the design. It's available in Black and White and is still IP68 water and dust resistant.

gsmarena_112.jpg

The rest is unchanged, including perks like the largest image sensor in modern smartphones - the 1/1.28" 50MP sensor with RYYB filter and 100% phase detection coverage. There's also the 40MP ultra wide-angle cam, the color temperature sensor and 3D ToF sensor on the back.

gsmarena_109.jpg
gsmarena_105.jpg

The P40 Pro+ has the same 6.58" OLED panel with 90Hz refresh rate as the regular Pro. The 32MP selfie cam (4К/60fps video) is joined by a secure IR face scanner, which can be used as an alternative. There's also an in-display fingerprint reader (that is 30% larger than on the previous generation)

gsmarena_201.jpg

The Huawei P40+ Pro will cost €1,399 and will be available in June.

Huawei unveils gaming and glamour cases for Huawei P40 Pro, wireless charging case for P40

Alongside its usual roster of silicone and flip cases, Huawei unveiled a couple of unique designs for its new flagships. Some are just pretty to look at, others add functionality to the phones.

The first is a Gaming case for the Huawei P40 Pro (which we imagine will fit on the P40 Pro+ as well, since they have identical dimensions). It adds two shoulder buttons on the "top" side of the phone (when held horizontally). The case simply connects over Bluetooth, you'll see a prompt as soon as you put it on the phone.

Then there's the Huawei P40 Wireless Charging Case. It's an old school solution to an old problem, specifically adding wireless charging to a phone that doesn't have it natively. The good news is that it goes up to 22.5W, which maxes out the wired charging capability of the phone.

There was a similar case for the Huawei P30 as well.

Next up is some glitter chic for the P40 Pro. The Glamorous Case is embellished with Swarovski crystals. It comes in a handmade brocade box with black velvet lining, Huawei even perfumed it up with a flower-scented card.

Huawei P40's first render leaks, to feature a curved 6.57" screen

Recently something that looks like an official render of the Huawei P40 started going around the web accompanied by some display specs as well. The original tweet from a few days ago reads 6.57-inch FHD+ AMOLED panel supporting HDR and covering 100% of the DCI-P3 color space - something you'd expect from a flagship phone. Although, something tells us this is all about the Pro version. Oh, and it will have two punch-holes to house the front-facing cameras on the front.

gsmarena_000.jpg

As far as the leaked official render is concerned, it doesn't reveal much except that it's co-engineered with Leica, which isn't to anyone's surprise and also comes with a curved back and front panel. However, judging by the image, the curvature isn't as extreme as on the Mate 30 Pro, meaning no waterfall screen. Other than that, the camera bump seems a bit thick.

Of course, all of this comes a bit too early as the P40-series are expected to land sometime in March, as they usually do, so all of this might be inaccurate. Stay vigilant.

Última edição:
Huawei P40 Pro might come with a penta camera setup and notchless display

The Huawei P40 and P40 Pro are coming in March 2020 and we already got a glimpse of their designs through leaked renders last week, which revealed the P40 duo will sport rectangular camera islands on the back.

The images didn't reveal the total number of rear cameras, but thanks to a recently leaked image, we know the Pro variant will come with a total of five snappers on its back - a 64MP Sony IMX686 main sensor joined by a 20MP ultrawide, a 12MP periscope telephoto (10x optical zoom), a macro camera, and a 3D ToF unit.

The image shows off the P40 Pro in blue color, with the four cameras stacked on top of each other, and the periscope unit placed on the right.

gsmarena_003.jpg

The P40 Pro is rumored to arrive with a screen measuring 6.5" to 6.7". Previously leaked renders didn't tell us whether it will be a notched or notchless display, but a leaked panel of the P40 Pro reveals it will flaunt a notchless screen with slim bezels.

gsmarena_002.jpg

It's unclear whether the P40 Pro will come with a pop-up selfie camera or an under-display one, but we should know more about that as we inch closer to the official unveiling.

Leak: Huawei P40 Pro Premium will join P40 and P40 Pro, have 10x zoom camera

Yesterday, we saw renders of the Huawei P40 Pro with four cameras on the back, a knock against rumors of a penta-camera setup. Today, new renders appear that show both four and five cameras – what’s going on?

The second set of renders come from the reliable @evleaks. What seems to be happening is that Huawei will add three new phones to the flagship P-series instead of the usual two. Apple did it and so did Samsung, so why not Huawei?

gsmarena_002.jpg

Having a closer look reveals something even more interesting – the premiere model (the one with five cameras), dubbed Huawei P40 Pro Premium Edition, has a periscope telephoto lens with 240mm focal length.

Assuming that the main camera has a 24mm lens, that’s 10x optical zoom. Compare that to the four camera model, the Huawei P40 Pro, which has a 125mm periscope lens. That should be 5x optical zoom.

Both versions have an 18mm ultra wide camera. The two additional cameras on the P40 Pro Premium are probably a dedicated macro cam and a 3D ToF sensor. The P40 Pro will have a ToF sensor, according to Teme, another leakster covering the P40 phones.

As for the base model, the Huawei P40, we already saw that it will have a 17mm ultra wide and a standard 80mm telephoto lens (so, 3x optical zoom). According to Teme, the Huawei P40 will have a 52MP main camera (1/1.3” sensor), 40MP cine camera (1/1.5” sensor) and an 8MP tele camera.
