Reading the top of the CPU's heat spreader, you can easily tell that this processor is based on the "Northwood" core, as it has 512k of L2 cache. The chip runs at 800 MHz front side bus and at 1.525V core voltage, and remains similar to previous Pentium 4 processors in terms of heat production and power consumption. Our test platform, Asus's P4C800-E Deluxe, worked perfectly with the 3.4 GHz Pentium 4 right out of the box, even without a BIOS update. The Pentium 3.4 GHz is based on the "D1" stepping of the Northwood processor core, which was also used for previous 3.2 GHz processors.

The performance gaps between these three chips (Athlon64 FX-51, Pentium 4 3.2 GHz Extreme Edition, and Pentium 4 3.4 GHz) are quite small, and we’d say of these three chips, the 3.4 GHz is a much better value. Intel is being surprisingly modest with the 3.4 GHz pricing, keeping this chip under $500, and only about $50 more compared to their 3.2 GHz Pentium 4. Considering this chip will also be compatible with a huge load of motherboards already on the market, we’d think it should sell fairly well.
