Motherboard makers: Intel’s dual-core Presler has stability issue

Charles Chou, Taipei; Jessie Shen, DigiTimes.com [Tuesday 15 November 2005]

Sampling Intel’s 65nm dual-core Presler processors has revealed some stability problems, according to unspecified motherboard makers, adding that the problematic CPUs include the 2.8GHz 920 and 3.0GHz 930 series.
Launch of end products based on the Intel Presler core may be pushed back from the January 2006 date originally scheduled by system vendors, the makers noted.

Samples of Intel’s next-generation Yonah processors, on the other hand, also built using the 65nm manufacturing process, have gone through tests smoothly, the makers indicated. Launch of dual-core Yonah-based products is expected to take place in January of next year as originally planned, the makers added.

In related news, motherboard makers express optimism about shipments in the fourth quarter of this year because supply of entry-level chipsets have improved due to more output from Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) and VIA Technologies and Intel’s recent move of restarting the production of its 86GV chipset line.

"Netburst" goes out in a bang (almost literally) ;)

NEWS
Intel is predicting that its microprocessors will hit 10GHz by the year 2011. In addition, it is currently working on a system bus that is 10 times faster than its upcoming 400 MHz (4*100MHz) Pentium 4 system bus, working at effective speeds of around 4 GHz.

What will we do with all that processor power? Intel is working hard to bring high-end applications to your desktop featuring much more video, speech interaction, and more complex and functional user interfaces.

ROB'S OPINION
Hopefully, most of you are familiar with Moore's Law, so this doesn't come as a surprise to you. If not, Moore's Law states that the number of transistors in a common microprocessor will double every 18 months. As well, it can be applied to processor speed and many other computing/technology metrics. This law has more or less (no pun intended) held true since the transistor was invented. So, assuming that early 2001 is a time when 1 GHz processors are rampant let's see what we get if we apply Moore's Law:

early 2001: 1 GHz
mid 2002: 2 GHz
early 2004: 4 GHz
mid 2005: 8 GHz
early 2007: 16 GHz
mid 2008: 32 GHz
early 2010: 64 GHz
mid 2011: 128 GHz

This is very interesting indeed. Intel appears to be underestimating progress in 2011 by a full factor of 10. Even by doing that, it's still making headlines with its predictions. Some will call this crazy, but those that yell the loudest have the shortest memories.

I want my 8 Ghz, damn it !!:x2:

Asus jumps the gun with final Presler specs

1066 MHz FSB, 4MB cache inside the core...

ASUS REPS sent out a press release with details of its Intel 975X, CrossFire supporting a "workstation" motherboard. Under the name Pentium Extreme Edition 955, Intel will deliver two 3.46GHz clocked cores on the same substrate. Did we say two cores? Unless you've been living under a rock, the thing is that Intel decided to raise the yield by putting two cores on a substrate and make 'em work together. Very brave concept indeed, only problem is - it has some stability problems for now.

Each of the two cores comes with Hyperthhreading technology, making a total of four threads in Windows Task Manager. Each core also spots 2MB of L2 cache, bringing a total of 4MB cache - a record in consumer CPU area - OK, Extreme Edition isn't exactly consumer, but it ain't a Xeon either. With the price set at $999, Intel is heavily under pricing AMD's FX-60 and 5000+, which will sell for a daunting 20% more.:n1qshok:

Imagine if we wrote that Intel would undercut AMD prices just one year ago, we would probably hear the sound of men in white uniforms coming to pick us up.

Biggest news of the whole 955 CPU is the launch of Vanderpool Technology, VT or simply - virtualisation technology, which will tie the four cores together and enable multiple operating systems to run at the same time. Can't wait to see Mac OSX and Windows running on the same machine, but hey, there's an Apple saviour tech inside, also known as La Grande technology. TCPA is a bad bad thing.

You will be able to plug the CPU only into motherboards that support 1066MHz FSB, which means Graphzilla's nForce4 SNAFU-Breaking Edition, and the latest 975X chipset. Also, a big surprise is the support for the CPU coming from the "Blast from the Past" of the chipset world - both 865 and 875 Kicking PAT Gelsinger Edition.

This also means you'll be able to have a sleek new 65 nano CPU on a motherboard with AGP graphics and DDR-I memory. So, if Nvidia and ATI do not want all these AGP users to spend money on their precious 7800 or X1800 boards, that money will probably end up in Intel's or AMD's pocket. Because the 955 certainly packs a punch of power.

Anyway, luau with the new Extreme Edition is set for January 16th. µ

Face it, Netburst is dead.

CPU a 4.5 Ghz.
