DailyTech previously reported analysts believed NVIDIA was a prime candidate for an Intel acquisition. Other analysts predict Intel is unlikely to acquire NVIDIA. Nevertheless, there’s interest in NVIDIA from other tech companies. Joe Osha, an analyst for Merril Lynch stated “We don't think there's a solid rationale for a deal and we don't think it's going to happen." According to sources it would appear other industry players were interested in NVIDIA, though no formal negotiations have occurred.
Craig Barret, Intel Chairman had this to say about the rumors "We treat investments and things of that sort like fine wine and we never discuss them before their time, so we don't comment on rumors of that sort.” Other analysts such as Doug Freedman from American Technology Research remain skeptical over a possible Intel acquisition.
Speculation of a NVIDIA purchase rumors began popping up shortly after the AMD and ATI merger.
Osha said in his research note that it was wrong to assume that Nvidia must be a potential target for Intel just because AMD was buying ATI. "What AMD wanted out of its deal was a workable platform strategy. Intel has that already."
"There's been plenty of speculation this week regarding whether Intel might acquire Nvidia," wrote Merrill Lynch analyst Joe Osha in a note to clients published Thursday.
"We don't think there's a solid rationale for a deal and we don't think it's going to happen."
"I don't think its real," Freedman said of the speculation. Buying Nvidia would get Intel into "all sorts of businesses ... it doesn't match up with the core business," Freedman said.
"You're talking $12 billion, $13 billion, because Intel would have to pay a 20 percent premium," Freedman said.
Intel said to be seeking strategic partnership with Nvidia
Intel may raise its stake in Nvidia so that they can form a strategic partnership to oppose the merger of AMD and ATI, according to sources at Taiwan-based motherboard makers.
Nvidia shares climbed last week on speculations that it could be acquired by Intel amid the general disbelief that the chipmaking giant could ever do that.
Instead, Intel, which currently holds about 8-10% of Nvidia shares, may seek to form a strategic alliance with Nvidia by raising its stake in the GPU (graphics processing unit) vendor, according to the sources.
The partnership would imply that Nvidia decreases product developments for the AMD platform and devotes more efforts to IGP (integrated graphics processor) chipsets for the Intel platform, the sources said.
Nvidia is also evaluating the possibility of such a partnership, the sources claimed.
The US$5.4-billion merger between AMD and ATI is expected to be completed this quarter, posing a strong challenge for both Intel and Nvidia.
