Apple revamps the iPad mini, gives the iPad 10.2 new chipset and front camera

Apple kicked off its hardware announcements today with iPads. Both the entry-level iPad 10.2 and iPad mini got new versions.

iPad mini 6 (2021)

The iPad mini 6 got a lot more upgrades, starting with a totally overhauled design with flat edges and curved corners of the screen to bring it in line with the rest of the recently released iPads and iPhones.

Retaining the same footprint as before, the new mini now offers a 8.3-inch display as opposed to 7.9 inches on the outgoing model. The home button with embedded Touch ID is gone with the fingerprint sensor moving over the power button.

The TrueTone feature made it to the iPad mini 6, but more importantly it also got a boost in brightness to 500 nits.

For a more complete multimedia experience, Apple has included stereo speakers in landscape orientation as well.

The newer blocky design allows snapping the Apple Pencil (2nd gen) on the side using magnets.

The new iPad mini employs the latest generation Apple A15 Bionic chipset with a whopping 40% jump in computational performance compared to the older iPad mini as well as 80% leap in GPU performance.

The diminutive table also received an upgraded 12MP main camera on the back with True Tone flash and wider f/1.8 aperture. The front front-facing got another 12MP sensor, this time behind ultrawide lens.

The cullular version of the iPad mini was upgraded to 5G, while the Lightning port has finally been swapped for the far more universal USB-C port.

New 10.8-Inch iPad and 9-Inch iPad Mini Coming in 2020/2021

Kuo in the same note said that Apple is working on two new iPad models, which include a 10.8-inch ‌iPad‌ and an 8.5 to 9-inch ‌iPad‌ mini. These new iPads are expected to launch in the second half of 2020 and the first half of 2021, respectively.

"We predict that Apple will launch the new 10.8 inch ‌iPad‌ and 8.5–9 inch ‌iPad‌ mini models in 2H20 and 1H21, respectively. GIS will be the main touch panel supplier. The two new ‌iPad‌ models will follow iPhone SE’s product strategy, and selling points will be the affordable price tag and the adoption of fast chips. We believe that GIS will be the primary touch panel supplier for these two new affordable ‌iPad‌ models because the company is the largest medium-size touch supplier, thanks to the cost advantages of Megasite. We think that two new affordable ‌iPad‌ models will significantly contribute to GIS’s revenue because affordable models account for 60–70% of total ‌iPad‌ shipments."

Kuo said that he believes the two new ‌iPad‌ models will follow the ‌iPhone SE‌'s product strategy, which means affordable price points. At 10.8 and 8.5 to 9 inches, both iPads would be larger than the current models.

The existing low-cost ‌iPad‌ is 10.2 inches, while the current ‌iPad‌ mini is 7.9 inches. It's not clear if Apple plans to introduce larger-sized tablets or increase the available display size through bezel reduction.

Kuo previously said that Apple was working on an ‌iPad‌ mini with a mini-LED display that could be released as soon as late 2020, but it's not clear if the larger ‌iPad‌ mini mentioned in today's note is the same ‌iPad‌ mini that will get a mini-LED display.

Provavelmente é o que vai acontecer: manter o tamanho da chasis, crescer o tamanho de ecrã diminuindo o bezel (as margens, quiza acabar com elas).
Se assim for, voltarei a ter um mini. Venha ele!

Renders of iPad mini 6 suggest two punch holes: for the selfie camera and for the FP reader

Leaked renders of the iPad mini 6 suggest that Apple is on the verge of a major change in direction – for its tablets and perhaps later on for its phones too. The images come @xleaks7 and CoverPigtou, a collaboration that has a good (though not perfect) track record when it comes to leaking designs of upcoming devices.

Look at the renders and notice what is there and what isn’t there. This tablet could become Apple’s first device to feature a punch hole front camera. And there is no FaceID hardware, the mini will keep using a fingerprint reader.

And not just any FP reader, this one that appears to be inside a punch hole itself (as in, not an under-display reader). Two punch holes and on an iPad mini of all things? These renders should be approached with a healthy does of skepticism.

Even if the selfie camera does go in a punch hole, the FP reader could be relocated to the power button, just like on the new iPad Air. Under-dispay readers are quite cheap too and won’t require the UI to go around the permanent circle of such a reader (they would require a switch to OLED panels, though).

Perhaps, this is less crazy than it sounds – last week Bloomberg published a report, saying that the iPhone 13 will have an in-display reader. That report implied an under-display reader rather than a punch hole though.

Anyway, the last iPad mini had very chunky bezels. Slimming those down will allow the display to grow to 9.15” (up from 7.9”) while keeping the slate’s dimensions essentially the same – 203.2 x 134.8 x 6.25 mm.

Last year Ming-Chi Kuo did predict a 9-inch mini, but the analyst made no mention of such major design changes. Most of the predictions have been centered on the arrival of microLED panels and those are headed to an iPad Pro.

Apple is expected to unveil new iPads in March, so we’ll see how much of these punch hole and microLED rumors prove to be true in a couple of months.
