Apple's iPhone 14 Pro Max leaks in renders showing no notch and no camera bump

Next week, on September 14 to be precise, Apple is holding its grand unveiling event for the oft-leaked iPhone 13 family. Despite the negative connotations in some places, countless leaks have "confirmed" (as much as any leak can) that the company will in fact be using the number 13.

That means next year we're getting the iPhone 14 series, and today the first renders of the iPhone 14 Pro Max have been outed. We're not kidding, and that's not a typo. It's a strange world we're living in, for sure.

As you can see, the design isn't overall a huge departure from what Apple's been doing lately, but there are two rather shocking elements, and both are things that are 'missing'. We're talking about the 'trademark' iPhone notch, which is completely gone and now replaced by a single center-mounted hole punch selfie camera, and also about the fact that the cameras on the rear are flush with the rest of the phone's back - there's no camera bump, hump, island, whatever you want to call it, it's gone.

The phone doesn't look overly thick, though, so assuming this incredibly early leak is spot-on, that's quite the engineering feat we assume - to have flush cameras like that isn't easy considering how much 'inside space' they need.

Regarding the notch disappearing, apparently this doesn't mean Face ID is gone too. The source claims the rest of the sensors for that will be hidden under the display - sort of like the under-display selfie cams we're starting to see in the Android world. That doesn't sound incredibly likely, but it is very early still in this phone's development cycle, so things could still change.

Otherwise, what we see is a metal frame, unsurprisingly, with antenna bands all over. However, this time it's said to be titanium (and that was rumored back in July, actually). The design is highly reminiscent of that of the iPhone 4, with the round volume buttons and all, so fans of that will definitely rejoice. On the other hand, the port at the bottom is still Lightning, so fans of USB-C have been shunned yet again.

The renders are not actually leaked from Apple themselves, they're instead created by an artist based on schematics and information provided by unnamed sources. Note that the colors aren't finalized yet, and also that no details about what's inside the iPhone 14 Pro Max have been outed at this time, but a past rumor talked about it having a 6.7-inch screen, and a 48 MP main camera (outputting 12 MP pixel binned images), with 8K video capture support.

It kind of goes without saying that you should take all of this with a pinch of salt, considering the fact that we're about one year removed from the actual official introduction of this leaked model.

Analyst: iPhone 14 Pro duo to switch to dual punch hole design

Today’s Apple event will be an important one as it will bring a new iPhone SE (among other things), however, that will be old hardware at a new, lower price. The high-end iPhones are not due for an upgrade until September and rumors of one particular upgrade have surfaced once again – the notch will be replaced by a punch hole.

This change has been rumored often enough, but different analysts offer different timelines as to how it will happen. Mark Gurman of Bloomberg suggested that the Face ID system will go under the display this year, Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants offers a more gradual timeline that is divided into three steps.

First, the notch turns into a punch hole – two punch holes, in fact, a pill-shaped hole for the Face ID module and a round hole for the selfie camera. This is dubbed the “pill + hole” design. Young expects that the design will be exclusive to the two iPhone 14 Pro models, while the vanilla phones will still use the notch design (similar to the current refresh rate split).

Second, all iPhone 15 models in 2023 will switch to the dual punch hole setup and it is the holes may be smaller than this year. However, it’s not clear how much smaller.

The final step is to move the Face ID module under the display. That won’t require a huge redesign as the key obstacle is that one of the layers of the OLED display is not very transparent to the infrared light used by the face scanner. There are three ways to fix that: replace it with a different, more transparent material, use a “backside laser drilling” or use a different pattern for the cathodes that drive the OLED pixels.

Young believes the latter approach will be chosen, saying that one supplier is already qualified to enter mass production. But this doesn’t necessarily mean that the under display Face ID will be ready for 2023 – in fact, the analysts thinks it unlikely.

One potential challenge is that such a change requires that the display team and the sensor team collaborate on the issue and such a simultaneous change takes longer. Also, Apple prefers to dual source components to keep costs low and supply stable, so a second supplier will have to qualify as well.

Whether the under display design is ready for 2023 or pushed back to 2024, there is no mention of a fingerprint reader. Last year Gurman reported that Apple trialed UD readers, but wasn’t happy with the design and abandoned it.

Metal molds show only two sizes of iPhone 14: 6.1" regular and 6.7" Max

We’ve seen CAD-base renders of the iPhone 14 series before, now it seems that the design is close enough to final to start producing metal molds, which will be used in the making of cases for the phones. Photos of just such molds have started circulating on Weibo, confirming that Apple will reduce the size options for its main series from three to two.

As you can see from the labels, there will be two 6.1” models and two 6.7” models. That’s right, the mini is out, a non-Pro Max is in. Keeping with tradition, only the Pro models will have a third camera on the back - a telephoto module.

The 14 generation will miss out on periscope cameras, but is reported to feature an upgraded main camera with a 48 MP sensor. This should enable 8K video recording and better digital zoom. Note that analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that only the Pro models will get the new sensor.

The camera bumps on the two Pro models are expected to be bigger and thicker than the 13 Pro duo, likely to accommodate the new camera hardware. The non-Pro models may stick to the same camera hardware, but it goes further than that – we’ve seen rumors that they will use the Apple A15 chipset from last year, while the Pros will get the new A16. This new chip should bring extra processing power to handle the 8K video capture.

The most important changes this generation may be on the front, not the back. For the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, anyway, they are expected to switch from a notch to a dual punch hole design. The iPhone 14 and 14 Max will likely stick with the notch, but they should at least get bumped up to 120 Hz refresh rate.
