Installing linux
I've choosen Knoppix (version 3.2 dated 07/2003) because of its hardware detection and easy set up. Once it's been installed I've modified /etc/apt/sources.list and /etc/apt/apt.conf to match SID's and run "apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade":
-------
root@quinipt:/home/quini# cat /etc/apt/apt.conf
APT:efault-Release "unstable";
APT::Cache-Limit 10000000;
Apt::Get:urge;
root@quinipt:/home/quini# cat /etc/apt/sources.list
# Security updates
deb http://security.debian.org stable/updates main contrib non-free
# Unstable / SID
deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian unstable main contrib non-free
deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian-non-US unstable/non-US main contrib non-free
-------
Here you can get the output from dmesg.
Touchpad
-Despite Knoppix sets X (v.4.3) to use any mouse (ps2, usb and serial), I had to change protocol from IMPS2 to PS2 in order for it to work. I sometimes use an usb mouse with no problems.
Wired LAN
-Works fine (8139too module).
Wireless LAN
-Doesn't work, no linux drivers.
Modem
-I've found a driver at Smart Link, but I haven't tryed it (no need).
ACPI
-I've downloaded vanilla kernel 2.4.22 from kernel.org and ac1 patch from linuxhq.com; here you can download my .config file .
It powers off, screen turns off after x minutes under X, cpu runs cooler and fan is always never on.
Centrino's speedstep
-AC1 patch adds centrino's advanced speedstep. This feature together with cpufreqd and cpudyn makes it work really cold: it runs always at 600mhz despite it needs more power. Cpudyn speeds the CPU up when needed and lows its speed when not.
Battery life
-Of course it depends on the use; my experience with this laptop, thanks to cpufreqd & cpudin, is about 4 hours battery life time.
DVD-RW
-290LMi models have a DVD-RW recorder. Mine's Toshiba SD-R6112, able to record DVD-R at 2x, DVD-RW at 1x, and 16x/10x CD-R/RW. I've been able to record all kind of media using Xcdroast & cdrecord.prodvd (non free, but free for a non commercial use).
PCMCIA
-It seems to be working fine out of the box.
USB 1.1
-Seems to work fine, as I usually use a Logitech usb mouse. Modules loaded are usb-uhci, input and mousedev.
Despite this I haven't yet been able of syncing my Palm m515 via usb. It seems not to create the apropiate link to /dev/usb/ttyUSB1 8-?
USB 2
-Untested. Insmoding ehci-hcd module shows:
-----
ehci_hcd 00:1d.7: Intel Corp. 82801DB USB2
ehci_hcd 00:1d.7: irq 10, pci mem e0a05000

PCI: 00:1d.7 PCI cache line size corrected to 128.
ehci_hcd 00:1d.7: USB 2.0 enabled, EHCI 1.00, driver 2003-Jun-19/2.4
usb.c: USB disconnect on device 00:1d.2-2 address 2
hub.c: USB hub found
hub.c: 6 ports detected

Firewire
-Untested. Insmoding ohci1394 module shows:
-----
ohci1394: $Rev: 1010 $ Ben Collins
ohci1394_0: OHCI-1394 1.0 (PCI): IRQ=[11] MMIO=[e0001800-e0001fff] Max Packet=[2048]
ieee1394: Host added: ID:BUS[0-00:1023] GUID[00023f3744005b60]
-----
IrDA
-It seems to have a supported chip by SMC, but I haven't been able to make it sync with my Palm m515 8-(
Insmoding smc-ircc shows:
-----
found SMC SuperIO Chip (devid=0x5a rev=00 base=0x002e): LPC47N227
SMC IrDA Controller found
IrCC version 2.0, firport 0x230, sirport 0x3f8 dma=3, irq=4
IrDA: Registered device irda0

Extra buttons
-This laptop has got 2 extra buttons, called P1 and P2. You can give them any function using acme.
Sound
-The intel integrated sound card works after setting it through /etc/int.d/alsa-autoconfig
3D (DRI)
-Works fine (tryed tuxracer at 1024x768 )
Este é o relato de alguem que percebe bastante de linux. e mesmo assim, tem de utilizar "truques" para poder utilizar o portatil razoavelmente bem (nao há suporte nativo de ACPI, nao há UDMA, etc)
a minha duvida reside no seguinte:
