Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) - Tópico Geral

Estive a testar no ultimo mes as duas edições (XFCE e Gnome/Cinnamon) com os varios repos (UP3/latest, UP4/incoming, testing, sid, sid/experimental).

O Mint XFCE é quase tão leve como o Mint 12 LXDE mas mais funcional e completo. O Mint Gnome com o Cinnamon 1.4 está a ficar bom. Pena é os updates de muitas centenas de MB e em alguns casos de mais de 1GB! Ainda bem que vai haver respins!

Não sei como o Clem escolheu o MATE como desktop principal para o proximo respin do LMDE mas a decisao é dele. Acho que com a existencia do Mint XFCE o desktop principal devia ser o Cinnamon mas parece que o Clem quer mater o MATE como desktop principal do LMDE porque é um clone do Gnome2. Espero que para o Mint 13 LTS ele escolha o Cinnamon.

Acho um pouco estranho ele optar por manter um repo para congelar o LMDE com Gnome 2 mas é mais uma possibilidade de escolha para quem ainda não decidiu se prefere MATE, Cinnamon, XFCE... ou SoluOS.

Desde que o repo latest passou para o UP4 que os servidores não se aguentam, é preferivel adiar o update ou apontar para o Debian testing. No futuro o Clem espera resolvir isto copiando nos mirror o incoming para o latest ou dar mais tempo para sincronisar os mirror.
 
Eu, mal o SolusOs lance a definitiva nos netbooks passo a ter esse em vez do Mint. Mint 8 nos netbooks para já :) e só vou tirar pq de facto SolusOs está demasiado bom .
 
O maior problema do SolusOS é a instabilidade do Ikey. Se não fosse isso o LMDE hoje seria mais parecido com o SolusOS, o Ikey teria já tido tempo para fazer o novo instalador para o LMDE/SolusOS, melhorado outros promenores e apresentado o LMDE com LXDE e com Fluxbox. Como o Ikey saiu da equipa do Mint isso não aconteceu.

Quanto mais o Ikey afasta o SolusOS do Debian mais dependente do Ikey ficam os utilizadores da distro. Se por um lado quero ver o que ele faz, testar a distro, aprender e aproveitar o que for possivel para o Mint por outro não vou usar a distro em computadores que não os meus porque não quero correr o risco de instalar uma distro que é suposta durar mais dois anos (base Debian 6 stable) para passados uns meses pifar porque ninguem sabe do dev principal. Primeiro o Ikey vai ter de provar que consegue manter a distro em condições e depois sim passo a utilizar o SolusOS envez do LMDE. Como é o contrario que se passa parece que vou continuar a utilizar LMDE durante mais uns tempos.
 
Não, este tem o Debian como base. O Mint MATE-Cinnamon tem o MATE como default mas ambos estão instalados, para usar o Cinnamon tens de fazer logout, escolher o Cinnamon e logar.
 
Já testei os 3 desktops (MATE, Cinnamon e XFCE) e não encontrei bugs ou problemas. Se continuar assim pode ser apenas uma ou duas semanas mas se forem descobertos problemas pode demorar mais ou mesmo necessitar de uma segunda RC.

A versão (32bit) XFCE usa 105-110MB de RAM depois do boot no Vbox, o Cinnamon 160-165MB e o MATE 170-175MB. Se preferes algo mais leve o XFCE é preferivel.

Esta RC pode ser uma boa opção para ti se não recuperares a tua instalação. Espera pelo anuncio oficial da RC, lê as notas de lancamento e experimenta.

3. What is a semi-rolling distribution? Updates are constantly fed to Debian Testing, where users experience frequent regressions but also frequent bug fixes and improvements. LMDE receives “Update Packs” which are tested snapshots of Debian Testing. Users can experience a more stable system thanks to update packs, or switch their sources to follow Testing, or even Unstable, directly to get more frequent updates.
4. How does LMDE compare to the Ubuntu-based editions? Pros:

  • You don’t need to ever re-install the system. New versions of software and updates are continuously brought to you.
  • It’s faster and more responsive than Ubuntu-based editions.
Cons:

  • Although it’s using Romeo for unstable packages, LMDE continuously changes as it receives updates and new software. Compared to a frozen version of Linux Mint which changes very little once it’s publicly released, it’s not as stable. Things are likely to break more often but fixes can also come quicker. For this reason, LMDE requires a deeper knowledge and experience with Linux, dpkg and APT.
  • Debian is a less user-friendly/desktop-ready base than Ubuntu. Expect some rough edges.

  • About the installer: The live installer is developed from scratch with Debian in mind. It’s configurable and it can be re-used by other Debian-based distributions. We noticed a lack in live technologies and in live Debian installers, so we’re happy to take the lead on this. If you’re a developer and you’re interested in using it, have a look at its source repository and don’t hesitate to contact us so we can help you fork it and merge upcoming changes between our two projects.
  • About the media: It comes as a liveDVD. Locales work differently in Debian and the package base requires more space.

Alguém me consegue explicar porque não consigo instalar as drivers da ATI (mesmo pelas explicações dadas no site) no Mint? Tentei instalar manualmente e não dava, tentei pelo repositorio do debian e quando fiz reboot, o X estava marado. Já é a 2º vez que tento e falho miserávelmente...

Como preciso do portátil para trabalhar acabei por instalar o Ubuntu 12.04. Mas estava a gostar do LMDE, será que alguém me dá umas dicas??

Alguem usa esta distro? Que dizem?

Uso Arch ha anos mas n tenho tempo actualmente para configurar tudo ao milimetro. No entanto, prefiro o conceito de rolling distros.

É bastante porreira, é basicamente Debian Testing com uns pozinhos de Mint... Quando tive instalado não tive nenhuns problemas, sem ser instalação das drivers da ATI... Mas isso foi noobice...
