PS3 Mass Effect 3 (Bioware)

Mass Effect composer explains ME3 absence ( Jack Wall: It was "time to move on". )

Earlier today we learned that Requiem For a Dream composer Clint Mansell is scoring Mass Effect 3, taking over from series mainstay Jack Wall. Why the change? Well, it was just time to move on, Wall has revealed.

In an email to Eurogamer, Wall confirmed that the split was entirely amicable, and wished the studio well with the forthcoming sequel to its sci-fi RPG saga.

"I have had a great relationship with the folks at BioWare having done three games with them. We're all still very good friends, so nothing dramatic," he explained.

"I think it was just time for a change. I'm so proud of the work I've done on the ME franchise and I so appreciate the kind words about those scores from people like yourself.

"It was just time to move on. I'm working on some very exciting projects and look forward to when I can announce them, but also very much wish the dev team at BioWare all the best on ME3."

Wall has a long history in the game music biz, stretching all the way back to SegaSoft's forgotten 1998 PC shooter Vigilance. Other scores on his CV include Myst III, Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow, Jade Empire and the first two Mass Effect games.

Electronic Arts is delaying the release of Mass Effect 3 into early 2012.

Casey Hudson, Executive Producer of the Mass Effect series, made the announcement through the game's official Facebook page.

"Mass Effect 3 will be released in the first three months of 2012. The development team is laser focused on making sure Mass Effect 3 is the biggest, boldest and best game in the series, ensuring that it exceeds everyone's expectations."

Perfeito.

Novos detalhes:

A slew of Mass Effect 3 magazine coverage has been absorbed and summarised by the internet.

Non-spoiler information first, courtesy of NeoGAF.

Mass Effect 3 develops melee fighting and each character class will have a special move. An Engineer will use an Omni-tool fire lash attack, for example, while an Adept will throw people back and stun them.

In Mass Effect 2, powers were upgraded three times and customised at the top, fourth tier; did you want a wider impact zone or a more focused blast? In Mass Effect 3 a Vanguard can tweak Charge to first slam an opponent harder, then do more damage, then be used more often.

What's more, powers can combine - a Concussive Shot can work with Cry Ammo to freeze a large area.

In Mass Effect 2, enemies advanced on Shepard's spot of cover throughout the battle. BioWare will enhance this for Mass Effect 3, abolishing the use of a single hiding spot for each battle. And movement will be essential to tackle some of the new game's harder enemies, as Shepard manoeuvres, undetected, to a rear blind/weak spot to deliver the fatal blow.

The opponents Cerberus will throw at Shepard include heavy troopers with enormous armour and Assassins with the same biotic capabilities as you. There are also Phantoms who wield blades. But, don't panic, this time Shepard can do a roly poly. Or a commando roll, whatever you want to call it. Among other new moves.

Stop reading now to avoid story and character information. I mean it: look away.

Your Mass Effect 3 squad will be smaller than your ME2 squad, which had 12 recruits. "We're focused on a smaller squad with deeper relationships and more interesting interplay in Mass Effect 3," Mass Effect overlord Casey Hudson explained.

"And we're bringing everyone back - every main character is in Mass Effect 3 somewhere."

Confirmed as Mass Effect 3 recruits are Garrus, Liara, Kaidan, Ashley and Tali (depending on if they're alive). Wrex sounds to be in the balance. Each character's equipment will be updated.

There are apparently no new romance options in Mass Effect 3. BioWare revealed that 70 per cent of Mass Effect 2 gamers weren't loyal to their Mass Effect 1 love interest. And this will have repercussions in Mass Effect 3.

Shepard has become an enemy of Cerberus because Shepard joined the Alliance. Why did Shepard do that? Because Cerberus is working with the Reapers. Why? We don't yet know.

Throughout Mass Effect 3, Shepard will venture to the homeworlds the Asari, Turians, Salarians and Quarians. And, of course, Shepard will explore Earth, including a Seattle-Vancouver mega-city before and after a Reaper attack. Shepard will also explore Mars.

Finally, the biggest spoiler. Stop looking.

Shepard can pilot a 50-foot Cerberus Atlas mech. And he'll need firepower like this when fighting a 600-foot Reaper on one of the massive levels. The scale of Mass Effect 3, BioWare said, will dwarf not only previous Mass Effect games, but also anything Unreal Engine 3 has been used for.

Skip ME3 sidequests, get "minimal" ending

Dodge Mass Effect 3's myriad sidequests and you'll be punished with an unsatisfying endgame, developer BioWare has revealed. Executive producer Casey Hudson told PC Gamer that players who take the time to explore the game will be rewarded with an "amazing" conclusion.

"If you do a little side quest, or you go off and do a major plot, these things contribute to the war effort," he explained.

"If you just rip straight down the critical path and try and finish the game as soon as you can, and do very little optional or side stuff, then you can finish the game. You can have some kind of ending and victory, but it'll be a lot more brutal and minimal relative to if you do a lot of stuff.

"If you really build a lot of stuff and bring people to your side and rally the entire galaxy around you, and you come into the end game with that, then you'll get an amazing, very definitive ending."

BioWare to move away from sci-fi/fantasy? - Zeschuk: "It's something we discuss a lot."

BioWare is considering moving away from its traditional sci-fi and fantasy roots and dipping its toes in more realistic waters, according to found Greg Zeschuk.

Speaking in an interview with Gamasutra, Zeschuk explained that it was a topic that regularly came up for discussion as a way to broaden the appeal of its games.

"As we look forward, that's something we consider more and more," he said. "It's interesting, I think. Initially, I remember, the debates were kind of entertaining. I think our context initially was from a very traditional RPG perspective.

"So, think of the discussion 10 years ago. Okay, [compare] Baldur's Gate to current day... You look to where both Dragon Age II and Mass Effect 2 and then 3 have evolved to, and it's very, very different.

"You can imagine the cop drama set in the Mass Effect sort of framework. You can imagine a spy adventure in that context. I think actually that what's happened is our ability to conceive and understand different game contexts has evolved. Then that starts opening up new platforms into things that are maybe less traditional than we have historically [done].

"We're not confirming anything today, but it's something we discuss a lot, because one of the things we want to do is really try and broaden our appeal, broaden our reach, sell more units, get more fans."

BioWare's last release was fantasy RPG Dragon Age II in March, while sci-fi dominates its current development slate with Mass Effect 3 and MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic.

We're not confirming anything today, but it's something we discuss a lot, because one of the things we want to do is really try and broaden our appeal, broaden our reach, sell more units, get more fans
