Blu-ray gains ever more momentum, but is this move by MGM really a surprise? By Carl Bender - November 10, 2005 Print Email Yesterday MGM announced it would be throwing it's support behind the blu-ray format in the upcoming format war. With a massive library of over 4,000 movies and TV titles, this certainly provides quite an addition in terms of potential content. But is it really a surprise? With Sony's participation in a consortium purchase of MGM last year for $5 billion, Sony and it's studios have since become the largest holder of catologue video content. Besides the value the movies themselves represented, the purchase of MGM has always been viewed as something that would be brought to bare on the next generation format battle. In a sense, MGM's support has from the very beginning has been a forgone conclusion... because Sony is the owner.
