Microsoft on track to meet Xbox 360 sales targets

3.3 million units shipped worldwide to date

Microsoft has confirmed that it has shipped over 3.3 million Xbox 360 consoles worldwide, putting the company back on track to meet its global sales target following massive component shortages at launch.

The news, which has been confirmed by Microsoft PR, was initially reported by Dean Takahashi, a San Jose Mercury News reporter and author of two books on the Redmond giant's entry into the console gaming sector. His most recent work looks into the launch strategy of the first next-generation console and is titled The Xbox 360 Uncloaked: The Real Story Behind Microsoft's Next-Generation Videogames Console.

Takahashi claims to have been given unparalleled access to key figures with Microsoft and its relevant partners in order to research his latest book, and believes he is perfectly placed to comment on the progress of Microsoft's ambitious tri-continent hardware launch strategy, which has been plagued from the outset by component shortages and a damagingly low retail supply until recent months.

According to Takahashi, the 3.3 million figure is believed to be the number of units sold through, rather than shipped. "In any case, both of those numbers shouldn't be that far apart because the 360s are still flying off the shelves," he added.

Microsoft had initially hoped to sell six million units by the end of its fiscal year, having launched the console last November in the US, followed by an early December launch for Japan and Europe.

The company has since revised its goals, expecting to sell between 4.5 and 5 million by the same date, meaning approximately 1.7 million units will need to sold in the next couple of months - an achievement Microsoft is pushing hard to meet, ramping up production to around a million units per month throughout its various manufacturing partners.

Sony has stated that it plans to sell 6 million PlayStation 3 consoles by the end of March 2007, which - assuming the Japanese manufacturer is not impeded by similar component issues - leaves less than six months following the worldwide launch this November to achieve sales figures Microsoft has yet to attain. If successful, the year-long lead on the next-gen market that Microsoft so desperately wanted may turn out to be rather a wasted opportunity.

Xbox 360 shipments tip over 5 million; 15m targeted by mid-'07

Microsoft sticks to full-year target as Xbox 360 eats into software giant's bottom line

Worldwide shipments of the Xbox 360 have passed five million units, according to the latest financial report from software giant Microsoft - which also reveals the extent of the losses the company is making on the next-generation system.

According to the fourth quarter report for the three months to June 30th, Microsoft shipped 1.8 million units of the Xbox 360 during the period - up from 1.7 million units in the third quarter, and 1.5 million in the pre-Christmas holiday season.

That brings overall shipments to over five million units, with the lion's share of sales being in North America - where over 3.3 million units have been shipped, compared with just 1.3 million in Europe and a diminutive 400,000 in Asia.

With the five million unit point reached by June - just as the firm promised last year - Microsoft reiterated its target of selling (or at least, shipping) ten million units of the console by the end of the year - and added another ambitious target, namely the sale of 15 million units by the end of the next financial year in June 2007.

Looking at the financial side of things, the Xbox 360 is causing a serious impact on the firm's bottom line at this point in its lifespan - with the Home and Entertainment Division, whose revenues come primarily from the Xbox and its software, recording healthy revenues of $1.14 billion, but losses of $414 million.

That contributed to an overall fall in Microsoft's quarterly profits - although the firm did still turn in an enormous $2.83 billion in profit, this was down from $3.7 billion in the same quarter last year.

Microsoft boasts healthy attachment rates for Xbox 360

Marketplace service proves popular with Live users

Microsoft has published a new set of stats for the Xbox 360, revealing healthy attachment rates for software and accessories and a high download rate for Xbox Live Marketplace.

Following the recent release of titles such as NCAA Football 2007, Prey, Chromehounds and Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-Earth II, all of which have secured a place in the 360 top ten, the software attachment rate rose to 4.6 games per console this month. The Xbox 360 also has the highest accessory attachment rate among consumers, with 2.9 units sold per console.

Microsoft also announced that more than 80 per cent of Live users have downloaded content from Xbox Live Marketplace - bringing the total number of downloads to more than 46 million.

Almost 70 per cent of Live users have downloaded music videos, movie and game trailers, and 65 per cent have downloaded at least one game from Xbox Live Arcade.

The number of Xbox Live Arcade downloads since launch now stands at more than 8 million, and the most popular titles are Geometry Wars, Uno, Bankshot Billiards 2, Marble Blast Ultra and Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting.

Microsoft did not reveal how many Xbox 360 consoles have been sold, but reaffirmed that it plans to ship 10 million units by the end of the year, with a library of more than 160 software titles. The Redmond giant went on to predict that between 13 and 15 million consoles will be shipped to retail by the end of the fiscal 2007 period next June.
