DS Trackmania DS

Última edição:
Can you confirm any preliminary details regarding modes on offer and the numbers of players Trackmania DS will support yet?

Firebrand Games:
You really need to talk to Focus Home Interactive for that, but the game will have a full 3D track editor just like on PC with immediate access to the racing, high speed 60hz action which is true to the original look and feel. The game will offer 4 player support.

Is this a one-off deal for TrackMania, or will Firebrand become the ‘driving’ force behind future TrackMania games on consoles?

Firebrand Games:
I am afraid I cannot comment on that other than to say we are huge fans of TrackMania and also console specialists so we would obviously wish to support the future of the game.

What sort of hurdles have you faced when attempting to translate the PC game over to DS?

Firebrand Games:
The physics required as well as the real 3D world editor demanded expertise and effort from our R&D team. It was a challenge to shrink what the PC could do onto a much less powerful platform. We are very confident in our team’s abilities and I am proud to say that we have exceeded what we thought possible and I am sure players will love the game on DS as much as on PC.

Entrevista:

What makes TrackMania different than other DS racing games?

Dan Fletcher:
TrackMania DS is an entirely new entry in the TrackMania series – and the first ever console installment of the franchise. For those who haven’t experienced TrackMania before, the basic gameplay is quite different from other racing games. The aim is to race around tracks as quickly as possible to beat pre-determined times in order to achieve medals; the twist is that these courses are filled with huge jumps, loops and other obstacles that need to be navigated successfully in order to finish the race. The main difference to other racing games is the presence of the 3D Track Editor and the ability to save custom tracks and share them with your friends. This essentially, means the replay value of the game is effectively limitless.

I know a big part of the TrackMania franchise is to create and share tracks. Did you have any problems with this on the DS?

DF:
We didn’t really have any problems in implementing the functionality to create and share tracks. We are lucky that here at Firebrand we have some really talented and experienced guys that relish these sorts of opportunities to create games that push the hardware and bring something new to the DS.

How big of a track can we create, and how many of them can we save on our cartridge?

DF:
Big! The Track Editor has been optimized for the DS to provide fantastic gameplay and the ability to build large tracks on the same scale as the licensed tracks within the game. There are over 200 pieces that can be used within the editor and an essentially limitless number of different track combinations to experiment with. The exact number of tracks that can be saved on the cartridge is still to be confirmed.

How will sharing tracks work? Only with friends or will you have a database of tracks we can access?

DF:
Tracks will be able to be shared locally with friends.

TrackMania DS won’t have online track sharing or online play, but it will come with a great suite of multiplayer options that will allow the player to play against their friends on both the official tracks and custom tracks that they have created.

TrackMania DS has the option of playing with up to eight players on one DS via the Hotseat mode”. It can also be played with up to four players at the same time using only one copy of TrackMania DS through Single Card Download Play. Finally, it can be played by up to four players simultaneously using Multi-card Play, racing on either the official tracks, or any custom tracks that the players may have.

Obviously the community aspect is a big part of TrackMania on the PC and the features we have added to TrackMania DS stay true to that ethos. Given the portable nature of the DS, we’re encouraging fans of the game to meet, exchange tracks and race against each other directly. As great as online gaming can be, it never really matches the enjoyment of competition that comes when you and your friends are racing against each other in the same place.

Will the track editor be as robust as the PC version?

DF:
The Track Editor is extremely robust. It was the sole tool used to create the pre-built tracks within the game, which means the player is able to create and share tracks that match those found in the solo mode.

How many different cars are available and do they handle differently?

DF:
We have stayed true to the original TrackMania PC games in terms of the cars and their handling. We have 3 different environments in TrackMania DS; Stadium, Desert and Rally and each environment will use a different vehicle with handling unique to that environment and the driving surfaces contained within it.

What kind of modes can we expect to have in the game?

DF:
TrackMania DS will feature a variety of new Single and Multiplayer challenges designed exclusively for the Nintendo DS. Single player will contain Race, Puzzle and Platform modes and there are a variety of multiplayer options that can be enjoyed with one or multiple consoles.
