The wonderful Red Hat software project for easily managing wired and wireless networks on Linux, NetworkManager, is preparing for its first major release in over two years. NetworkManager 0.7 has been in development for a long time with many improvements made, but there has been no formal release. However, Fedora in particular has been shipping with the latest NetworkManager code for some time.

Among the improvements in NetworkManager 0.7 are faster connection times, more reliable wireless networking, improved D-BUS API, multi simultaneous network device support, enhanced support for different wireless security modes, and PPP integration. The PPP integration means that many mobile broadband / cellular cards (SM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS/HDSPA/HSUPA/EVDO) are now supported "out of the box" by NetworkManager.

The main mastermind behind NetworkManager 0.7, Dan Williams, mentioned on his blog that this new release will finally be out soon. As one other note, he's also ported the PPTP VPN plugin to the version 0.7 code-base. On the GNOME Wiki he has made a list of items that are currently blocking the release. These blocker items range from missing documentation to GNOME Keyring issues.

Dan Williams has delayed some of the Bluetooth enhancements for NetworkManager until version 0.7.1 or 0.7.5. In addition, IPv6 support will likely be missing from the 0.7.0 release.

No ubuntu o unico " problema " a meu ver é as placas 3g c isto ja ficam a funcionar lindamente ? ;)
 
Já tenho a correr a versão do svn e até agora parece-me bem :) Mas um programa destes precisa de sobreviver a mts coisas, por isso só o tempo dirá quão bom ele está (diga-se de passagem que fazer melhor do que o q já tinham feito, não era dificil).
 
Penso que nunca foi dependente do GNOME.
Isto porque, se não estou em erro, o networkmanager é um projecto e o gnome-networkmanager/nm-applet é componente distinto.

Sim, o NetworkManager é uma plataforma independente do ambiente gráfico. Já corrigi problemas no software e não há nada dependente de Gnome/KDE/gtk/qt, é um simples programa em C++ que usa o dbus...

O nm-applet é que é outra conversa, é dependente de GTK mas qualquer pessoa com KDE ou outro ambiente gráfico qualquer (sem ser o Gnome) apenas tem de ter as libs da gtk.

Além disso, dão imenso jeito para fazer interfaces facilmente de aliarem ao Glade :)

Estou ansioso que saia isso. Estou farto de andar com shell scripts manhosos para me ligar à eduroam... pelo NM consigo, mas ele não guarda as definições.. mas isso, julgo eu (!), é um problema do gconf.
 
Alguém consegue usar a nova versão com Dynamic WEP (802.11x) -> PEAP -> MSCHAPv2 no eduroam? A mim fica que tempos a tentar autenticar e nunca funciona.

PS: A usar Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS

Distro: Slackware 12.1
 
Certamente que é preciso usar alguma flag para compilar sem o keyring, pois tal como mostrei no meu último post, no proprio site oficial eles dizem que é distro e DE agnostic.
 
Para slackware usei estas opções para instalar:
E precisa dos packages libnl e dhcdbd.

./configure --without-gnome --with-distro=SLACKWARE

Mas ainda não esta a funcionar. Existe pouca documentação sobre isto. É uma questão de procurar mais info.

EDIT: Para mim o wicd continua a ser uma boa opção. E ja o usei em eduroam.
