Nintendo estimated to have sold more than 600,000 Wii consoles at launch
November 20, 2006 11:39

The least expensive of the three third generation gaming machines had a smashing start: At least if we believe NexGen wars, a website that tracks game console sales, Nintendo had sold more than 667,000 Wii consoles by Monday noon, more than double of what Sony was able to sell of its Playstation 3, which was estimated to have sold about 259,000 units initially and will remain in very limited supply until the second quarter of next year.

Microsoft, which has a one-year lead over its two competitors, has sold about 7.1 million Xbox 360 units so far.

While Nintendo had a much more generous launch allocation for the Wii available than Sony of its PS3, the bright white device still sold out within minutes. More than 1000 people were waiting in line at the main launch store, the Times Square location of Toys R Us. The average electronics store reportedly had between 60 and 100 Wiis available, while the PS3 was limited to less than 40 at large Best Buy locations and five to ten units at other retailers.

Ebay sales for the Wii have been brisk after launch, but are lacking the pricing dynamics of the PS3, which reached prices of more than $10,000 in the hours after launch. By Monday noon, there were 30,000 Wii consoles and accessories for sale through the online auction site. Including one or two games, Wiis were changing hands for about $300 and $400. Playstation 3 sales have cooled down considerably, with 60 GB models currently selling in the $1100 price range and 20 GB versions ending up at about $700.

Wii launched with game 20 titles. Nintendo said that the portfolio will increase by 13 by the end of the year.

Retailers Hail Wii Launch

Nintendo Wii got off to a flyer yesterday with major retailers reporting sell-outs. Although Nintendo has not released official figures, day one sell-through should be at well over a million.

Nintendo says it will have shipped up to 4 million units by the end of the Holiday sales season. Circuit City spokesman Jim Babb told Siliconvalley.com, “There were enough people in line to snap up almost all the units of the Nintendo Wii that we had in stock, so it was an instant sellout.”

Although Wii has appeared on eBay for around $500, it’s thought unlikely that these inflated prices will be sustainable, as new stocks arrive. Unlike PS3’s launch, buyers were interested in the games, rather than a quick profit. Babb added, “The people we saw today were much more likely to take these games home and play them and love them rather than flip them on eBay.”

Nintendo’s new Wii games console got off to a flying start in the United States this weekend as Amazon.com sold out of the machines in less than 60 seconds.

The world’s largest online retailer said on its American website: “We sold out of our initial supply of the Wii on Sunday morning, November 19, in less than one minute. We expect to receive periodic shipments of the Wii from Nintendo throughout the holidays.”

Ops, Too late:

"We are currently unable to offer this item. It may be out of stock at the manufacturer. If you would like to purchase this item, we recommend that you occasionally check this page to see if it has become available. "

Pelos vistos ainda duraram uns belos 5 a 10 mins...lol.

Wii Sets New Amazon Record

"We expected a high number of people to visit the site today but the response was phenomenal."
Yesterday, we reported that Amazon's UK website would soon start taking pre-orders for the Nintendo Wii the following morning. While we reported that this would probably act as a lifeline for many of you, we did not expect the following...
While we expected the console to be sold out, we didn't anticipate how quickly it would do so. Due to heavy traffic at the Amazon UK website, pre-orders weren't being taken until 9.30 a.m. Within seven minutes, the whole lot had gone!
Amazon.co.uk’s console and videogames manager James Schall said: "We expected a high number of people to visit the site today but the response was phenomenal."
The Wii has also become the fastest selling item ever on Amazon UK, a record previously held by Coldplay's X&Y album, and Harry Potter. Not a shabby record to hold by any means, especially with the fact that orders were filled up within such a short amount of time.

In a recent ZDNet poll, readers said they would prefer getting a Nintendo Wii for Christmas over either a PS3 or XBox360. A Gamasutra survey of games industry professionals showed them favoring the Wii by a huge margin (Disclaimer: I used to be a game designer myself). News organizations questioning people standing in line for PS3's showed that most intended to sell them, but most of the people in the Wii line intended to play them.

Both casual and hard-core gamers are excited about the Wii. Here are some typical comments:
"I waited in line for 13 hours to get the Wii at midnight. It is by far the greatest interactive game console yet. By the way I am a 56year old mom."

"I'm all about the gameplay, and Nintendo's clearly going to deliver. Is Sony? I'm not seeing any evidence of that so far."

"I will be picking up a Wii for two reasons. First, Zelda, and second, it's the first console that I think I will be able to play with my 3 year old son"

"As of right now, there's nothing on the launch list for Sony's PS3 that catches my eye as a must-have title. Nintendo, on the other hand, is making a massive statement with releasing two of their 'older crowd' franchises at launch, Zelda and Metroid."
The poll is still open. What do you think?

Not Yet On Sale, Used Wiis Wanted In Japan

When people line for Wii pre-orders, chances are it will be a success. And when stores start putting up signs offering to purchase those consoles at prices slightly higher than retail, you know in your heart of hearts that the new console is going to flatten and destroy Japan.

The Nintendo-centric Super Potato in Den-Den Town has put up notice that it will purchase "used" Wiis for 1,000 yen above the 25,000 fixed sticker price. Not expecting Yahoo! Auction craziness, but rather, consoles snapped up fast and sequestered away to people's homes for the upcoming New Year's holidays. Brian Ashcraft

Fingers Crossed! :D

Custa assim tanto esperar?

Wii is a massive hit - 600,000 First-Week Purchases Attracting Veteran and New Gamers
November 27th, 2006

REDMOND, Wash., Nov. 27, 2006 - Built on a foundation of pure fun, Nintendo’s new Wii™ video game system sold through to more than 600,000 consumers in the Americas in just its first eight days of availability. That’s a rate of nearly one per second continuously since the Nov. 19 launch. Including just first-party software and accessory sales, Wii instantly has become a $190 million business in the Americas.

During the Thanksgiving holiday shopping weekend, there was plenty of conversation across the nation about the high demand for the Wii system, with the acknowledgment that if you see one, you’d better buy it.

“Even with sales already in excess of 600,000 units, demand continues to exceed supply, as it’s clear this is one of the ‘gotta-have’ products for the holiday season,” says Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. “We’ve shipped retailers several times the amount of hardware the other company was able to deliver for its launch around the same time - and we still sold out. Given the inclusive nature of Wii game play, we’re seeing this new form of video gaming is already a huge hit with gamers and newcomers alike. It continues to be a phenomenal launch.”

The system also is succeeding in its stated mission of reinvigorating current players, while attracting new ones. Every Wii system includes the five-game Wii Sports™ software, which is the talk of the Internet, featuring countless reports on how previously devout non-gamers have suddenly been converted via the amazing new way games are experienced using the system’s remarkable controller. At the same time, the masterful The Legend of Zelda®: Twilight Princess, a favorite of avid gamers, already has achieved sales of more than 454,000 units in the Americas, representing more than 75 percent of all hardware purchasers.

Licensees, pleased not only with the sales performance of the Wii, but also its creative development capabilities, are publicly sharing their comments:

“Madden NFL 07 is a great example of how the Wii gives players a whole new experience on their favorite games,” says EA Studio President Paul Lee. “EA’s creative teams are working to build more Wii features into some of our most popular franchises.”

“The creativity we’ve been able to unleash on the Wii system with our game Red Steel has been eye-opening for our development teams,” explains Ubisoft President Laurent Detoc. “Having the opportunity to design and develop entirely new game-play experiences using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk is both exciting and rewarding.”

Classic games also are proving to be a hit on Wii, which offers downloadable access to 20 years of the best of Nintendo®, Sega Genesis® and TurboGrafx16™ hits via the system’s Virtual Console™ feature.
