Xbox 360 Still Selling at a Premium Price

Microsoft's Xbox 360 still commands a premium price tag two months into the retail channel. Online retailers like Amazon.com and Walmart.com have seen stock trickle back into inventory and have been sold in premium cost bundles.

Walmart.com's recent Customer Choice Bundle with Hard Drive that includes an Xbox 360 premium edition, extras and six games at $838.52 is sold out at the online division. Amazon.com's Xbox 360 bundles, which range from around $700 - $1000, have also reappeared and quickly sold out to customers.

The Xbox 360 remains in limited availability in most retail locations. Analysts blame production problems that may involve any of the 1,700 parts required to assemble one unit.

Tech Update: MemCard Drivers, bf Packer, Raw Dumps, DVD Auth. Encrypted

o let's start with the hotswap method. I think everyone here already knows that the TOC of the original game is a fake one, so you have to load a big DVD (data or movie, more than 8Go) in your drive, then stop it (my software has a function for that), and replace by the game you want to backup.
Now the DVD drive thinks that you have a big DVD loaded, so it let you access all the Xbox DVD sectors (nearly 4000000). But because your hotswap DVD is larger than the Xbox DVD, you have to find the difference between the two DVD, to compensate the shift of the second layer (layer1).

The software has a function to find the shift, it's called 'Hotswap/Find magic number'. To do that, the software use some 'bench marks' on layer0 and layer1. These bench marks are already known by the software, and stored in a little text file (provided with the software). So for now you have to use a known game to find the magic number. When you have it, you can replace in the drive the known game by an unknown one. And if you want the software to add the unknown game to thje database, you just have to clic on 'Hotswap/Add game to database' and choose a name for the game.

Coming not so soon to a 360 near you…

Well, we’ll have another World War 2 FPS for the 360, this time from EA and tentatively set for Q4 06 release… Medal of Honor: Airborne. This time we’ll be out with the 82nd and have some interesting options, including non-linear play, full airborne drops, and the promise of historically accurate details. As a history buff, and having spent quite a bit of time studying the 82nd’s history, I’m definitely interested in seeing how this game develops.

Also announced is a new Star Trek title, Star Trek: Legacy, in development with a projected release in Q4 06 as well… I’m not a huge Trek fan, but the description I read stated the game would incorporate long timelines including all the major series, fleet commands, and large multiplayer options. Let’s hope this doesn’t turn out to be a captain’s log…

4 new XBLA games coming soon?

During his CES speech, Peter Moore announced there were more games coming to the XBLA by March, dropping a couple names like Street Fighter II, Texas Hold 'Em, and Marble Blast Ultra. Well, don't look now, but the official Xbox Live Arcade website has now added 4 new titles, including the aforementioned marbley one. Newcomers include:

* Crystal Quest: The 1987 classic is back. This updated and enhanced version allows you to pilot your ship through 60 waves, collect crystals, and evade baddies.
* Marble Blast Ultra: ...navigate your marbles through moving platforms and dangerous hazards, or go head-to-head in ultra blast multiplayer mode, racing to collect gems to see who ultimately wins all the marbles.
* Feeding Frenzy: Eat anything that's smaller than you and swim clear of everything else. The more you eat, the bigger you get, and the bigger you get, the closer you come to taking on the fearsome Shark King.
* Astropop: Match four bricks, use combos and powerups to score big points! Two different gameplay modes, coupled with 33 challenging bonus rounds, offers hours of extraordinary replay value for players of all ages.

I don't see any of them showing up in the Marketplace yet, but how far off could they be if the websites are up already?

Rumble Roses XX further exposed

Revealing reports from Japan give more details on Konami's girlish grappler; numerous costumes will be available online.

Just recently, Konami announced the Japanese release date for Rumble Roses XX, the Xbox 360 game featuring fit, fighting femmes. As the March 30 release date approaches for the wrestling game, more information on the game has trickled out.

According to reports from retail sources in Japan, Rumble Roses XX will feature dozens of characters, 30 swimsuits, and 40 miscellaneous costumes. What's more, Konami is planning to release additional costumes that can be downloaded from Xbox Live.

Konami has also added more entrance animations for the wrestlers, packing in about an hour's worth of wrestlers making their way to the ring. New stages in the game include outdoor areas, such as a skyscraper, beach, pool, and Death Valley. There's also a street stage, which plays like a fighting game and doubles as a tutorial, allowing two combatants to duke it out outside the confines of a wrestling ring.

By connecting to Xbox Live, players will be able to compete with other players in tag-team matches. In addition, there's a customization mode where players can change the look of their character by tinkering with elements such as their body measurements and costumes.

Rumble Roses XX will also feature a Queen's Match mode, where the characters fight in swimsuits and face penalties if they lose. Players can also take screenshots during the match and upload them online.

Konami has not yet announced a release date for Rumble Roses XX in the U

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat Update

It seems the Xbox 360 version of Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is to receive a complete overhaul, instead of the straightforward port many had expected. Eurogamer were recently meet up with the guys at EA and were able to play the latest build for 30 minutes.

EA noted that because the animation systemes used between the PC and Xbox 360 version are completely different, it would have been near impossible to simply port it over. Don\'t worry though, the Xbox 360 version is going to have many improvements over the PC version. Not only will the graphics be designed to take advantage of the Xbox 360\'s power, every conceivable item on your player\'s body will be individually modelled and animated.

Also worth mention is the medals to advance your rank would not be available online and offline. Look out for this killer title in March, it has already taken the PC gaming market by storm and will probably do the same to the Xbox 360. Call of Duty 2\'s days may be numbered as king of the 360 shooters.

Google Maps On Xbox 360

Google maps is one of the coolest things around of the moment, miles better than any of the competition. Someone has put together a solution that combines the Google Maps API (the thing that makes it all work) and Windows Media Centre Edition.

The idea is you stream from your Windows Media Centre PC with the Media Centre Extender and voila, Google Maps on your Xbox 360.

Useless in many ways, but still very cool.

PDZ Dark Agent Guide

Finishing PDZ on dark agent can be tough, not only due to the lack of in-game saves but you first must unlock it. It seems help is at hand though as videos of all 13 mission are obtainable for your viewing pleasure.

The videos are all well done and have been edited to provide useful tips at key points in the mission. Despite showing the dark agent setting they will prove useful for anyone struggling with the game. A multi-player video is availble although this seems more of showcase for the guys killing streaks.

Insert DoA4 big stick joke here; arcade stick reviewed

Like fighting games but miss the feel of a real, authentic arcade joystick, complete with 6 perfectly arranged face buttons, and an 8-way joystick with just the right amount of audible "click"? For $60 you can get Hori's officially licensed arcade stick for Dead or Alive 4. How do we know it's just for Dead or Alive 4? Cause it says so right on it!

Of course, the controller can be used with other titles, although DoA4 will recognize if you're using it and adjust the controls accordingly. With support for the Xbox 360 headset and a USB connection, it seems like an ideal way to get your classic arcade game on. Xbox Solution is unequivocal in their praise, gushing, "This has to be the best overall arcade stick I have ever bought. The only one that comes close to it is my Neo Geo arcade stick and that was a lot more expensive. No fighting fan will complain that the stick is not centered or that the buttons don’t respond right away. Hori has made the perfect stick for the best fighting game to come to a console."

I'm imagining that a more popular use for this stick isn't going to be Dead or Alive 4 so much as it will be Street Fighter II. Hopefully SFII will be cheap enough to make that $60 price tag a little less bothersome.

Xbox 360 Prepares for African Debut

With Microsoft still struggling to provide enough units of its next-gen system to American and European gamers, it simultaneously prepares to launch in other markets. Huh? Yes, an Australian launch is well underway, and Microsoft is eyeing the South African market as its next launch ground.

An article in My Broadband looks into the possibility of the Xbox 360 launching very soon in Africa, with the higher-ups at Microsoft looking at all the circumstances revolving around launching in that country. According to the article, representatives of Microsoft wait on an official nod from the main headquarters to go forward.

We are in the process of evaluating a number of things, including market economics, distributorships and loyalty to Microsoft products," she says. "SA is ready for another console game after the market has been dominated by one supplier [Sony] for the past seven years," White says. "Timing will also be critical, because we will have to factor in when our main competitor would introduce its newer versions."

We'll watch to see how this global strategy continues to work out.

Revisiting the DVD-9 Limitations on the 360

When the 360 was announced, and later as it was launched, gamers everywhere have wondered whether or not Microsoft made the right choice in not including a next-gen drive such as HD-DVD to allow for more space to accommodate the more complex gaming experiences promised on the 360.

While there has been much argument on the matter, Games First takes a look at the issue and dives head-in to try to answer the question on everyone's minds: Will we run into a speed block later on?

The short answer is no. The authors argue that most 360 games today take up about half of the space available on a DVD-9 disc, and games with complex environments don't necessarily hog gigabytes of information. They study the increase that Xbox 1 games had over the life of the system, and make some strange findings.

We find that there is often a misconception about how big an Xbox 360 or Xbox title really is. For example, people often assume that Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind has a large filesize since it contains an extremely large gaming environment. However, Morrowind is actually one of the smallest games on the Xbox, only 900 megabytes big.

Take the screenshot above as an example. Azurik and Far Cry. There is a world of difference, and it seems that Far Cry WOULD require more data, but it turns out Far Cry is only 500 megabytes larger, not a giant leap. Be sure to check out the article. It's a good read.

360 to Get Japanese RPG

The Xbox 360 has been performing poorly in terms of overall sales in Japan, with a hesitant consumer market yet to fully embrace the new system. One of the likeliest reasons that the machine didn't fly off the shelves was its poor launch titles (by Japanese standards).

Without a game to truly reach out to the Japanese, the 360 has struggled. Microsoft hopes to turn that around, as it prepares for the release of a Japanese RPG that is, according to IGN, based on one of the most popular games in that country.

The title probably won't make it to America, but we're sure gamers in Japan are excited about it. The Xbox 360 will get its second Japanese RPG on 3/23 in the form of Tengai Makyo Ziria. Unlike the recently released Enchant Arm, this title isn't original. It's actually a remake of a classic PC Engine CD RPG, a game that ranks among the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest titles as one of Japan's most favorite games of all time.

1,000 Demo Units for Australian Gamers

Australian gamers will soon be able to test drive the new Xbox 360, with Microsoft distributing 1000 demo consoles to retailers across the nation in February.

While Microsoft hasn't finalised which stores will be receiving 360 demo units, it has confirmed which next-gen titles will be on show. Game titles for the demonstration units will include Project Gotham Racing 3, Kameo: Elements of Power, Peter Jackson's King Kong The Official Game of the Movie, and NBA Live 06. A large selection of video game trailers will also be shown on high definition Samsung plasma television screens.

Two versions of the console will be sold in Australia, which at this stage is set for a 2 March launch. The Xbox 360 Core System, which comes with a console, composite AV cable and wired controller, will retail for AU$499.95. The upgrade Xbox 360 bundle, which includes the console, 20GB hard drive, media remote, wireless controller, component cable and Ethernet cable, will retail for AU$649.95.

wxRipper v1.2 and wx360 v1.6

I just released a big update of my tools, you will now be able to find the 'magic number' immediatly, without having to scan an unknown Xbox 360 DVD.
So there's no longer a difference between known and unknown games, they will all be detected/dumped the same way.

The advantage of this method is that you will be able to use wx360 directly to open the content of the DVD without having to dump it first. After doing the hot-swap you'll just have to open wx360, select the DVD-drive and click the DVD icon.
wxRipper will thus have a feature to find the 'magic number' immediately, without scanning the Xbox 360 DVD. The features related to dumping did not change.

XCM360 Faceplate "Ocean Blue" Revealed and Case Concepts Considered

As you can see, the picture above is the first photo released of a production color for the new TeamXtender.com's XCM360 Faceplate line. It's a thing of beauty. More interestingly, They sent me a collection of photos. Nay, make that concept renders/ideas for the Full 360 Case they are making.

Concept "X", Concept "Square"

It's pretty clear that TeamXtender is watching and listening to the members of the scene, and some designs are definitely scene inspired. Trying out ideas for Window designs from the looks of it. Probably looking for more feedback, so if you have any, post in the forum thread that follows. I'm eager to see these come to market in one form or another. I'm sure many of you are too.

Ghost Recon preview - coming along nicely

I’m sure you all remember how everyone had been disappointed by the really bad version of GRAW that was presented at X05. Low resolution textures, bad framerate, aliasing, bugs everywhere, there wasn’t much good to say for this game except a few good ideas. Well a bit more than 3 months GRAW is back and can boast to be the most impressive game I’ve seen running on a Xbox 360. Yes, it’s that good!

Being one (of the few, apparently) that has been looking forward to this game since the beginning, it looks like things are only getting better. I never spent much time with the past Ghost Recon games, but for whatever reason this one has really captured my interest. Keep your eyes on this one!

Japanese celeb promotes Kameo, succeeds

In an effort to boost the awareness of Rare’s quirky 360 platformer, which is just over the horizon for Japanese gamers next month, Microsoft hired out TV actress Kaori Manabe during an encouraging press conference last Thursday. Taking advantage of a huge 5.1 surround sound and big-screen setup at a local movie theater, guests had the opportunity to witness the celebrity pick up the controller in a fit of competition to see how many monsters she could take out in 90 seconds.

She killed 22. In any case, she seemed to enjoy herself: "It's fun and I can't stop playing," she said with obligation sincerity.

False alarm: back-compat still on track

Apparently the post from ActiveXbox that's been getting linked all over the web -- even here -- was a little short on details. They wrote that Microsoft's David Reid "[had] stated that the team who [did] the BC work are on holiday throughout January and will start work on priority titles when they return."

The Xbox team's Cesar Menendez clears the confusion up for us saying, "The Backwards Compatibility team is still working on adding your title to the list. Just because David Reid said (back in December?!) that they were going on vacation, doesn’t mean that all BC efforts have been halted."

The back in December comment refers to the Major Nelson podcast that the information was gleaned, inaccurately, from. In it David Reid said, "...right now, I’ve got a lot of guys going home on vacation, and you’re not going to see another [update] in December.%uFFFD We are looking at the spring, for those top games that we want to get up there, and you’re going to see more of this happening in the future.”

We've learned our lesson Cesar, scout's honor! Now, could you tell us when the next update is gonna be?

XBMC versus XBOX 360 and MCE

XboxSpace has an interesting, if cursory, comparison of the open-source media player for the original Xbox, the Xbox Media Center (XBMC), and the Xbox 360's Media Center extender functionality. The feature list on XBMC is monstrous, supporting many of the most popular codecs, streaming from SMB volumes, iTunes streaming, and more. The major shortcomings are that it requires a modded Xbox to run and additional storage capacities are strongly recommended.

The Xbox 360's functionality on the other hand is notably sparse in comparison, featuring limited codec support, video streaming only from MCE, and a similarly small 13GB hard drive. They conclude, "In sheer terms of Media Center functionality, XMBC is superior to the 360 in every respect. It is an application that you have to use to understand just how good it is."

What is upsetting is that this functionality far surpasses Microsoft's own, but they refuse to allow even trivial concessions like DivX support. Let's hope future Dashboard updates, and maybe even Vista, expand the feature set.

The Xbox 360 GPU - Interview with B. Feldstein ATI VP Engineering

Microsoft revealed that the Xbox 360 will feature a custom ATI graphics processor that clocks in at a blistering 500 MHz, with 48-way parallel floating-point dynamically scheduled shader pipelines and 10 MB of embedded RAM. Do all those numbers mean nothing to you? Don't worry.
We had the chance to interview Bob Feldstein, Vice President of Engineering, ATI Technologies, Inc., to learn more about the development and power of the Xenos GPU.

* TeamXbox: Before we continue, we never had the chance to clarify the correct name of the Xbox 360 GPU. Some call it Xenos, others C1. Sometimes it was known as R500. But the rumor was that ATI wanted to avoid that codename because it could make the Xbox 360 GPU look less powerful than ATI's R520 PC part. So, what is the Xbox 360 GPU codename?
* Bob Feldstein: The Xbox GPU had nothing whatsoever to do with the PC products. R500 was never an internal name for the Xbox. Internally we called the GPU, interchangeably, C1 and Xenos. C1 was a code name defined before we had the contract, Xenos was the project name after the contract was won - but C1 stuck in everyone's minds. Once we started calling it C1, it was hard to change.

* TeamXbox: The interface to the system's memory is 128-bit. Isn't this a bottleneck considering the bandwidth-intensive tasks performed in the GPU? Why was a 128-bit bus selected when PC parts already implement 256-bit buses in their high-end editions?
* Bob Feldstein: Excellent question because it gets to the heart of what is right in the system design. We have a great deal of internal memory in the daughter die referred to above. We actually use this memory as our back buffer. In addition, all anti-aliasing resolves, Z-Buffering and Alpha Blending occur within this internal memory. This means our highest bandwidth clients (Z, Alpha and FSAA) occur internally to the chip and don't need to access main memory. This makes the 128 bit interface to system memory, and the ensuing bandwidth, more than enough for our needs because we are offloading the bandwidth hogs to internal memory.

* TeamXbox: When the Xbox 360 GPU features were unveiled, Nvidia expressed doubts about unified shader architecture, particularly about its performance. Do you think Nvidia's comments are due to no Nvidia part, not even the RSX, having a unified shader architecture yet?
* Bob Feldstein: Oh yes. Very much so.

We just heard back from Microsoft about the rumor that the company has stopped manufacturing the original console [note x-s: or "distributing" as I think MS stopped making the original Xbox long time ago].
In a nutshell, their official response is that they do not provide details on manfacturing for their console. Here's the longer version, which sorta dances around the question.

"Our plans for the Xbox version 1 platform remain unchanged from what we discussed last year at E3. We expect to continue to sell Xbox V1 consoles well into CY2006. We have more than 800 Xbox games in the portfolio today with many more being added in the coming years. Xbox V1 is a great value for consumers and we expect to continue to see good demand for the platform in CY2006. We don't provide details on our console manufacturing plans for either the Xbox version 1 or the Xbox 360."

Screenshot roundup: Chromehound

Here's a small update that Armored Core fans and other war machine-crazed gamers will appreciate. Thirty new screenshots of Chromehound, FROM Software's mech title, have been released. But instead of "mechs" per se, they are fire powered "hounds" (if it's big, tall and shoots stuff, I don't care what they call 'em).

Don't forget the 12-person multiplayer campaigns over Xbox Live either. This is definitely worth looking forward to.

New titles coming from 3000 AD

The same guys that brought you the Battlecruiser and Universal Combat series have followed suit and announced two action titles for the Xbox 360. One of the games is Hostile Intent - Planetfall, a much more simpler action title than those features found in the previously mentioned series. You should expect much more expansive environments and "space and planetary excursions; first person and vehicular combat as well as a skill based progress system (e.g. from pilot to commander) through a revised campaign system."

A new property is in the works as well entitled KnightBlade - Line Of Defense. Being held in the vast darkness of space and other planetary surfaces, this title includes a first-person perspective and aerial/vehicular combat. These two games are a good bit away, but hopefully we'll hear more about them in the near future.

Joystiq interviews Peter Moore

The problem with interviewing somebody like Peter Moore, and the reason he does so many interviews, is precisely because his jobs it to stay on point and focus his responses. Some of the comments on my post about Dan Hsu's interview lauded his efforts to hold truth to power, and I certainly don't begrudge him that tactic. I might not agree that it was a "shot across the bow" so much as a gnat in the face, and question the presentation of the interview, but I am hopeful that more interviews succeed in pinning down the circuitous marketing-speak the video game industry excels at.

Joystiq's interview with Peter Moore at CES finally went up yesterday; though not intentionally confrontational, it manages to be direct and effective, and they walked away with some notable statements from Moore:

[Sales have] been almost exclusively for the Premium SKU for the Xbox 360. We predicted that and put retail levels in accordingly.

I mean, first of all, Sony’s a great company. They’ve come off two spectacular generations of consoles. You never underestimate the power of your competition. The only thing you can do, the only thing you can control, is your ability to execute flawlessly with your own product...

You don’t think they’re not going to sell out of PlayStation 3s, do you? You think that if I could create a piece of IP so that PlayStation 3s would arrive at Best Buy and they’d sit on the shelves? Come on, it’s not going to happen.

Microsoft to update Xbox 360 dashboard

According to a source close to Microsoft, the problems that are currently being experienced on the Xbox 360 dashboard will be fixed shortly.

The dashboard has a few minor problems, but annoying nevertheless. The screen freezes regularly on PGR3 when you try and access the dashboard, leading to the re-setting of the console. Other complaints include consoles crashing and the overall navigation of the dashboard.

The update will include the following:

1) Fixes for lockups in Xbox 360 games.
2) Additional functionality to the Dashboard.
3) Camera support for the Dashboard so that you can use your webcam.

Radeon equivalent to Xbox 360 over $500

Pundits predicted the next-generation of consoles, specifically the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, would maintain graphical supremacy for at least several years before their PC equivalents arrived on the scene. Of course that wasn't going to happen: specs of the unreleased ATI Radeon x1900 XTX indicate it's very similar to the ATI XENOS GPU found in the Xbox 360.

Both Hard OCP and Tech Reports report that the x1900 XTX sports 48 pixel pipelines, a 650 Mhz processor, and 512MB of 1.5GHz RAM. The Xbox 360 also has 48 pipelines, a 500MHz processor, and 512MB of 700MHz RAM. It looks like ATI may have just one upped the custom GPU design they just sold to Microsoft.

The problem with computer games tends to be that only a couple games even try to take advantage of monster cards like this one; most of them go for the lowest common denominator, opting to build an engine that is scalable enough to look great on all manner of systems.

Here's the real kicker: the x1900 XTX commands a whopping $500 plus! For that price, you could get an Xbox 360 and have enough left over for a game and a Live membership!

Xbox 360 Advertised with Hummer in UK

SANGER_A2 sent us 2 pictures of how Microsoft is advertising the Xbox 360 with a Hummer outside the Southampton University Union (UK) earlier this month. He also told us it was pretty popular with the students and that they had to power it from the mains using a long cable!

Japanese analysts weigh in on next-generation consoles

Credit Suisse's Defibaugh commented that the Xbox 360's sales in Japan were predicted to be low, but its actual performance was even lower. He thinks that the Japanese market will be dominated by the PS3 if the Xbox 360 continues to see sluggish sales in the country.
Daiwa Institute of Research senior analyst Eiji Maeda says that Microsoft isn't out of the race yet; the company had released its console half a year before its competitors, which gives it an upper hand in mass production and cost cutting.

Defibaugh and Maeda both think the PlayStation 3 will have half of the market in the worldwide next-generation console war by the end of 2006, followed by the Xbox 360 at 30 percent, and the Revolution at 20 percent.

HSDEMONZ - I have NOT been contacted in any way by ANY 360 chip 'devs'

We usually don't like to address rumors, but I'm personally sick and tired of the comments and questions I've gotten this past week. So I'm going to address it, and expose the liars. It has come to my attention that people are going around the site and irc, and making claims that I, HSDEMONZ, have been intentionally with-holding information and photography regarding the 360 modchips in development.

These claims usually start with "I sent HSDEMONZ and.." someone else was given or sent documents and photos of the chips in question. Let me state this very clearly, I have received only one letter, it was an emailed reply, from a single "team" (I use that term loosely) which was a reply to my request for chip pricing. That email, was, and has been the only message, correspondence, etc I have been given or received from anyone claiming to have a 360 chip in the works. (The funny part of that email, was that the pricing for chips went higher as you ordered more chips. Seriously, that chip team is either fake or stupid, or both?)

I think that any chip team that wants to be recognized, and respected, would actually try to get in touch with us. I've received no correspondence to that effect. So as of this writing, short of that pricing list from a team I won't name, but was named in the blacklisted411 article we posted news about before, I haven't received anything worth reporting. I post this now so that all of you who have "credible sources" saying otherwise, have played you all for fools. Get new sources folks, they lied to you. Imagine that!

When there is something REAL to post about 360 chips, you'll see it here on this news page.

Microsoft Discusses Japanese 360 Launch Issues

Microsoft of Japan officials reflected on the Xbox 360's faltering launch in that territory. To date, the system has sold less in its first month on shelves than the original Xbox did in its first three days, with only 107,800 units as yet moved.

"It was a lot more difficult than we had imagined. We couldn't prepare the launch titles that we had promised, and it made an impact," said Microsoft of Japan Xbox chief of operations Yoshihiro Maruyama about the difficult launch. Two games in particular were planned as launch, only to see delays: Dead or Alive 4, the new entry in the most popular Xbox series in Japan, missed the system launch by several weeks, and the game's first RPG, [em] -eNCHANT aRM, was pushed back by a month.

Another factor affecting the launch, said Maruyama, was an ineffective marketing campaign based around the 360's HD-video capabilities. "We also received some criticisms toward our promotions, saying that people don't understand what high definition is. The Xbox 360's main appeal is high definition, but we couldn't successfully convey it."

Confirmed: Asia Pacific launch delayed

The rumors were true; the impending launch of the Xbox 360 in Australia and New Zealand, as well as Hong Kong and Singapore (Taiwan?) will be delayed several weeks. From their statement:

In Hong Kong and Singapore, the Xbox 360 will now be released on March 16, 2006. In Australia and New Zealand, the new launch date is March 23, 2006.

The new launch dates have been set due to unprecedented global consumer demand stemming from challenges in ramping supply for a complex product like the Xbox 360. This is a short term manufacturing challenge and steps have been taken to increase supply to meet the strong consumer demand for the console.
Surely a frustrating situation for anyone waiting to get their mitts on one; however, with the current shortages, for those couple weeks, 360s might have been pretty scarce anyways. We're guessing the launches in Mexico, Colombia, and Korea are still scheduled for February then.

MSFT's earnings: "a sigh of relief on Xbox 360"

Microsoft reported better than expected earnings yesterday, and surprised some analysts with higher than expected sales of the Xbox 360. Microsoft's original sales forecasts were greatly altered when confronted with a widespread, and continuing, production shortage. To date, they have sold 1.5 million consoles; 900,000 in North America, 500,000 in Europe, and 100,000 in Japan.

For every console sold, they also sold four games and three accessories, a pretty high attach rate that is sure to decrease when more mainstream gamers purchase the system. The Xbox division lost $293 million for the quarter, versus a profit of $55 million for the same quarter last year.

Overall the sales of the Xbox 360 countered the earlier doom and gloom some analysts had predicted. Dean Takahashi quotes one analyst on his blog as saying, "There was a sigh of relief on Xbox 360." Takahashi reports that Chris Liddel, the CFO of Microsoft, "said [they] would now sell 2.5 million units in the first 90 days of sales, down from an earlier estimate of 2.75 million to 3 million. Celestica will come on board next month as the third contract manufacturer, so [he] believes Microsoft will hits its June 30 target of 4.5 million to 5.5 million units.

Final Fantasy XI release dated

Square Enix announced yesterday that their MMO Final Fantasy XI will be shipping soon to North America, Japan, and Europe, along with the upcoming PC expansion pack, "Treasures of Aht Urhgan." FFXI will be shipping in North America on April 18, with Japan and Europe following just two days later.

Players have been beta-testing the title for a couple weeks now, and we've heard complaints of repetitive gameplay, an agonizing install process, dated graphics, and worse. We've made a wishlist of all the things an MMO on the 360 should do if it wants our hard earned rupees, so the question is: are the FFXI beta testers out there planning on ponying up for the full version?

Oblivion collector's edition impresses

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is getting close. Bethesda Softworks released the packaging art and details of both the regular and collector's editions. The regular version will feature:

* One DVD, no more, no less.
* 48-page manual
* a nice-looking map... ooh, this is gonna be big!

The Collector's Edition will add:

* Different packaging (pictured) which reminds me a lot of the Lord of the Rings special edition DVDs.
* A bonus DVD featuring the usual screenshots, renders, etc., but it also features a making-of documentary. Check out the trailer!
* A collectible coin (a Septim).
* A 112-page "Pocket Guide to the Empire."

It sounds like the guys at Bethesda have really gone above and beyond here...

... but wait! There's more! Bethesda have also posted a very in depth (I'm starting to see a pattern here) Q&A session with fans. If you were hoping you could see your legs in first-person, you might want to sit down.

You can't. But we're sure there's something else in their to please you.

Bungie Gives Hints Towards New Project

The newest Bungie logo has a few tidbits about their new upcoming project. It is not Halo 3 like we told you, but it is something less futuristic. How do we know? Read the quote below from the update.

“A typeface can tell you at a glance, what the game is all about. And typefaces cause endless arguing and headaches. Halo, for example, would have looked completely crazy if we'd used a cowboy-style typeface, or even some classy olde worlde serif (that basically means a typeface with little "tails" on the end points of the letters - Star Wars logo is sans-serif and The Da Vinci Code logo has a serif) like Times Roman. For the Halo games, we used futuristic looking typefaces because those were obvious choices that fit comfortably in the new game. We won't tell you what typeface we're using in the next project, but it is a very elegant solution (that might of course change) and ties in well with some interesting stuff Dave has been doing with illustration and renders. And best of all, I can play with all of this at any time. It's an executable PC file that's spewed out by Director.”
