Os últimos drivers ATI têm problemas com algumas placas x1000 cards (x1400, x1600, x1600 pro):
Se sax bloquear, ao carregar o driver, e se conseguir encontrar algo do género disto em /var/log/SaX.log:
(EE) fglrx(0): PreInitDAL failed
(EE) fglrx(0): PreInit failed
então deverá desactivar o framebuffer na consola.
edite /boot/grub/menu.lst e remova a instrução vga=xxx da linha do kernel.

O Sax2 irá iniciar o seu programa de configuração no X. Poderá fazer mais algumas alterações aqui, mas fica ao seu critério.
Já tentei várias soluções, deste retirar o framebuffer (pus "vga=normal" na linha do kernel no grub) até desligar o monitor durante o arranque. A primeira tentativa produziu exactamente o mesmo problema. A segunda ainda foi pior pois o computador bloqueou completamente não tendo alternativa senão fazer um reset à máquina...

tou mm a beira de comprar um portatil com uma HD2600, o meu unico problema são os problemas que possa vir a dar com linux. alguem com uma destas consegue dizer se é facil por o beryl/compiz a funcionar? problemas de performance?
ja agora, como acham que vai ser o suporte da ATI nos proximos tempos? vao continuar a desenvolver os drivers? ha hipotese de chegarem perto da nvidia? lol

[*] Several image brightness and gamma-correction issues were resolved. Setting the gamma correction using xgamma, fglrx_xgamma, xorg.conf and in OpenGL games will all work as expected now.

[*] Video playback will no longer look blocky when playing a video file using a video player that utilizes the XVideo extension
