Parece que a lista de bugs ainda é maior que a lista de fixes :D

E os 8.5 estão para sair.

All of the Catalyst Linux driver releases this year have been... well, boring. There have been a few bug fixes in each release and new product support for the latest ATI/AMD GPUs, but no major features have been introduced in several months. However, during this time we've been telling you to get ready for an interesting summer and that "we have reason to believe AMD does have some Linux work under development that could make 2007 look boring compared to this year." It was in 2007 that AMD had introduced their brand-new driver with AIGLX support. Well, with the release today of Catalyst 8.5 the monthly Linux driver releases are becoming more interesting and we should have several exciting months ahead. What does today's Linux driver bring to the table? We'll give you the run-down in this article, but to get you started there is now Catalyst AI, Linux 2.6.25 support, and a much improved 2D performance!

There are several fixes and a few general improvements with Catalyst 8.5, but one of the new features is support for DKMS in AMD's graphical installer. A few months ago, the Ubuntu packaging scripts for the fglrx driver had added DKMS, or Dynamic Kernel Module Support. This Linux framework makes it possible to have kernel modules automatically rebuilt when booting into a new kernel and therefore making the system easier to maintain when upgrading the kernel. With Catalyst 8.5 and later, if DKMS is installed prior to running the graphical installer, it will attempt to create the DKMS kernel module automatically.

With the Linux 2.6.25 kernel having been released last month, Catalyst 8.5 introduces full support for this latest kernel. Some of the fixes in this release include the X Server no longer failing to initialize in some cases with the RS780 IGP, restoring TexturedVideo so that it's enabled by default on X Server 1.4, video playback improvements, fixing a soft hang when using dual-head fglrx on Ubuntu 8.04, and last but not least is fixing a segmentation fault in AIGLX and corruption when evicting compressed textures. Like most releases, there are also updated packaging scripts for many of the distributions. In preparation of other work to come, Catalyst 8.5 for Linux adds a libatiadlxx.so file.

While support for DKMS and the Linux 2.6.25 kernel is great, the Catalyst 8.5 most dramatically brings improved 2D performance. With this fglrx 8.49 driver, users should notice much improved 2D performance, especially with the KDE translucent shadow effects.

Further enriching the ATI Linux experience for gamers, the fglrx driver now supports Catalyst AI! This option added to the AMD Catalyst Control Center Linux Edition makes it possible to enable or disable specific driver optimizations. This option has been found in the Windows Catalyst driver for the past four years or longer, but it's finally appearing on Linux. At this time Catalyst AI is just found under the "More Settings" area with a slider bar for toggling this feature. The Catalyst AI options are just standard and advanced. We first hinted at Catalyst AI for Linux last October when the fglrx 8.42 driver was introduced. Also added to the AMDCCCLE in version 1.10 is a MipMap detail level adjustment. This setting can be adjusted so mimapping is done with performance or quality in mind.

In addition, this release also has PCI ID support for several new ATI GPUs. Among the GPUs with added support in Catalyst 8.5 include the RV770, M98, ATI Radeon HD 3690, and FireStream 9170.

The most interesting developments with this driver release are improved 2D performance and Catalyst AI, but Dynamic Kernel Module Support also goes a way into improving the installation experience for this proprietary driver and the Linux 2.6.25 support is needed for some of the newer Linux distributions. The bug fixes are also important additions to this driver.

E cá estão os 8.6

In AMD's usual fashion, this afternoon they have announced the release of new display drivers for both Linux and Windows. The Catalyst 8.6 release for Linux introduces a few bug fixes, version 2.0 of their driver installation API, and a few unannounced features are present. As always, we have the run-down for you on this month's changes.

Starting with the fixes for Catalyst 8.6 / fglrx 8.50 there are just a couple. The Linux fixes address corruption issues with full-screen OpenGL games, the system no longer hanging when logging-out with AIGLX enabled, a partially black screen after switching monitors on the RS780 / Radeon HD 3200, corruption in second server generation with some ASICs, X server crash while launching the AMD Catalyst Control Center on RHEL-4 x86_64 with a Radeon R520GL, and lastly is vsync not working properly in OpenGL. The Linux release notes mention a total of 21 issues resolved.

As is the case almost every month, the distribution packaging scripts for ATI's driver build / installation process have been updated. This month, however, Catalyst 8.6 brings their second-generation API for this installer. Version 2 of this driver package builder contains a number of enhancements, which will benefit both the package maintainers and end-users. Packaging script maintainers can now utilize an option for automating the installation process. On supported distributions, the user can simply run driver-title.run --buildandinstallpkg and it will not only build the driver package(s) but will proceed to install them using your distribution's package management system.

With version 2 of this API, end-users can now just call --buildpkg (or --buildandinstallpkg) without having to supply the distribution name/release and Catalyst suite will automatically attempt to determine this info. The main distribution to already have updated packaging scripts that comply with this new API is Ubuntu. Over the coming months, more of these packaging scripts should be updated as well.

That covers the official changes within Catalyst 8.6; however, that's not the exhaustive change-log. This driver is about 3MB larger than Catalyst 8.5 as it introduces some new yet-to-be-announced modules and other work. One of these is amdxmm. In addition, with X-Video there are now four available video formats available, and two of those are UYVY and YUV2. The YUV2 is great for those using MythTV and TVTime. There's also other work underway with the ATI/AMD Linux driver and we will talk about that on another day.
Unlike some of the other Catalyst earlier releases this year, Catalyst 8.6 is a rather interesting beast. It includes version 2.0 of their new packaging/driver installation API, a few bug fixes, and other important work. To the dismay of some users, Catalyst 8.6 for Linux doesn't support the Linux 2.6.26 kernel or X.Org 7.4 (X Server 1.5).

"A big part of it (about two thirds of the driver update, in fact) is a late-dropping AGP/DRM update that adds support for some new Intel and ATI graphics cards. And a big part of the arch update is the inevitable def_config updates, of course. I'm not all that happy about the timing of the support for the new cards, but at the same time I also hate delaying new drivers. Obviously the hope is that it can't cause any regressions, since the added code is almost entirely for stuff that simply wasn't supported at all before."

Since last month's release of Catalyst 8.6 for Linux we've seen the introduction of the Radeon HD 4850 and 4870 graphics cards and we've been allowed to share with you that CrossFire is coming to Linux along with other yet to be announced features. Today AMD has released the Catalyst 8.7 Linux driver and it doesn't deliver any new ground-breaking features, but it does bring a few improvements.

In fact, the new features in this release are just bringing official Ubuntu 8.04 and SuSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 SP2 support. In addition, there is early support for OpenSuSE 11.0 and Red Flag DT 7.0.

There are also a few fixes such as preventing freezes when resuming from OpenGL screensavers, images failing to display after installing the driver, corruption when switching displays, TV standard changes, fixing an X segmentation fault with Textured Video, and other fixes but nothing major. Of course, this is also the first ATI Catalyst driver release that officially mentions the Radeon HD 4800 series support.

There isn't too much for an end-user to see with Catalyst 8.7, as you can see from the release notes, but just wait and see what they have in store. Download the x86/x86_64 8.7 Linux driver here. Discuss this Linux driver in the Phoronix Forums.
