Opera Drop Solaris Support

In order to ensure a consistently high quality browser across our most popular desktop platforms we have reluctantly decided to drop support for Solaris. This will allow our UNIX development team to focus all of their attention on bringing Opera for Linux and FreeBSD up to final release quality, meaning that a 10.5x release for these platforms will happen as soon as feasibly possible". Opera assure us that this will have no effect on the existing Linux and UNIX ports.

Opera 10.53 Beta for Linux and FreeBSD released

Today we released the first beta version of Evenes for Linux and FreeBSD. The build is the same as the one that was posted as a release candidate on this blog on Friday.

Get Opera 10.53 Beta for Linux and FreeBSD

You can also read more about this release on Choose Opera. If you've been waiting Opera 10.5 to stabilize before trying it on your Linux or FreeBSD system, now is your chance. Try it and keep reporting any issues you have, help us make this the best release for Unix ever!

Some of you have asked about the mysterious 'Changed EULA' that appeared in the changelog for Unix in the last snapshot. This is part of an effort from Opera to make it easier to distribute Opera in the package repositories of various open source operating systems. Ruari has more information about that on his blog.

NOTA: É a versão deste post.

Performance, Speed Dial enhancements, and bug fixes

A new snapshot is ready for testing.

We have included a few things we have been working on, and that we are only adding to the main builds now. In addition to various bug fixes for mail, and cross-platform and Mac-specific bug fixes, we have tweaked DOM performance a bit. Please be on the lookout for regressions there.

There are also a few visual tweaks for Speed Dial, but you may have to do a clean install to get the new default background.

Já cheguei a perder todos os meus mails por usar snapshots como browser de dia-a-dia :P

Mas está lá o aviso, quem usa é por conta e risco. Faço sempre backups antes de instalar snapshots, e uso-os com versão de dia-a-dia.

Opera 10.60 Alpha 1: Speed, eye-candy, and bug fixing

We are now preparing for a 10.60 release, which we aim to synchronized across all desktop platforms. This alpha will give you noticeable gains in performance, an improved user interface (UI), and lots of bug fixes.

Performance!

Our Core team never rests, and we have noticeably increased Opera's performance once again. You should see performance improvements for both JavaScript, DOM and CSS.

UI improvements

In addition to the visual tweaks you have seen already, such as the Speed Dial facelift, we have also been making further UI enhancements. You will notice that the O menu button now says "Menu" for easy discovery, and instead of hard to read thumbnails for internal tabs, we have replaced them with icons. The tab hover previews have also received a facelift.

On Windows, we have disabled the Windows 7 taskbar previews by default, as they were causing frustration for people with a lot of open tabs. You can enable them from the Tabs sections of the Preferences dialog.

Carbon-neutral?

Following the major rewrite of the Opera Framework for 10.50, which replaced Carbon with Cocoa, we have gone back and removed as much Carbon code as possible. The few things that are left are loaded dynamically, which should improve performance.

Also for our Mac users, please note that Java only works if you have installed the very latest Java update on Mac OS 10.5 and 10.6. There is no Java support on Mac OS 10.4.

Unix

For Unix users, this obviously means that there will be no 10.5x version. However, we are aiming for synchronizing the 10.60 release across all platforms, and Unix will benefit from all the improvements since 10.5x.

Known issues
  • Icon replacements for internal pages are stretched in the tab hover previews
  • Webfonts are broken on Mac and Unix
WARNING: This is an alpha build of Opera. It is released for testing purposes, and there may be serious bugs and unfinished features.

Sem dúvida a melhor versão do Opera que usei até hoje em Linux, apesar de alpha, é mais estável que as últimas versões 10.5x que usei no OS, consome menos memória e está ainda mais rápido.

Que problemas são esses?
