Step by Step procedure to recover and set your Windows NT Administrator password.

Turn on the computer and wait to see what the screen saver is. The default screensaver for Windows NT is the logon.scr. This screen saver is activated after 15 minutes (900 secs) of inactivity at the logon screen. If the screensaver is different please refer to it instead of logon.scr in the following document.

A. If you can log into the machine with any regular Windows NT account, do the following steps from the command prompt.

1. copy %WINDIR%\SYSTEM32\LOGON.SCR to %WINDIR%\SYSTEM32\LOGON.ORG .
2. copy %WINDIR%\SYSTEM32\CMD.EXE to %WINDIR%\SYSTEM32\LOGON.SCR .
3. logoff, in 15 minutes (900 secs) you will see a DOS window appear.
4. you can now create a new user with Windows NT administrator priviledges or change the Administrator information. Utilities such as ADDUSERS.EXE, USRMGR.EXE and MUSRMGR.EXE are provided on the Windows NT Resource Kit.
5. copy %WINDIR%\SYSTEM32\LOGON.ORG to %WINDIR%\SYSTEM32\LOGON.SCR .
6. after you are done, you can type exit in the DOS window.


B. IF you can't log into the machine with any regular Windows NT account or you can't overwrite logon.scr, do the following steps.
*** That harddrive will be known as E: and the Windows NT directory will be known as WINNT for the instructions below.

1. remove the harddrive from the original machine.
2. place that drive in another Windows NT machine.
3. copy E:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\LOGON.SCR to E:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\LOGON.ORG .
4. copy E:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CMD.EXE to E:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\LOGON.SCR .
5. place that harddrive back into its original box.
6. boot up the original box and wait 15 minutes (900 secs) you will see a DOS window appear.
