Pure Anarchy

Premièring to the world very, very soon, Contrast is a mystery centred around cabaret, live jazz, fairgrounds, acrobatics and illusions.

But it’s no ordinary show! Through the marvels of modern technology, Contrast is coming to a Steam platform near you, louder than radio, faster than telegraph and more risqué than Lady Chatterley’s Lover! No more waiting in line for popcorn, no more pushy crowds, no more scalpers, this is the real deal!

This kind of experience ain’t cheap though, folks – there’s a catch. A little girl, Didi, needs some company – she’s a good kid, but she’s got some family troubles and is livin’ in a complicated adult world. She really needs a pal to help her out – and this is where you come in.

You, the mystery audience member, will play Dawn, an enigmatic young lady tasked with helping Didi as she explores the world of Contrast. You will need to use Dawn’s tricks of light and shadow (through clever special effects, you will be able to become your shadow, at will, whenever your shadow appears on a wall!), and summon up all your improvisational skills to move the story along.

It's been a while since our first look at Contrast
Though the news on the upcoming platformer has been slim, Contrast has not gone unnoticed, as it looks to be a unique addition bridging the gap between current and next-generation consoles. Now, Compulsion Games offers up a new trailer that reveals more about its heroine, Didi.Didi is a young girl who is struggling to understand her parents. To cope with adult situations beyond her control, she creates and befriends an imaginary figure by the name of Dawn. Players can solve puzzles and platforming obstacles by playing as Dawn, as Didi watches.Dawn can climb across silhouettes of strategically placed objects. She can even take the form of a shadow, expertly maneuvering through the dark streets of a setting that's part vaudeville, part film noire."You're growing up fast— you used to be scared of the dark," Didi's father remarks in the trailer. Little does he know, darkness and shadows may have become her greatest allies.

If Contrast interests you, be sure to check out editor Kim Wallace's feature on upcoming under-the-radar titles, as Contrast is one of eight titles she mentions.
Who knows? You may find other hidden gems to splurge on in the coming months.
Contrast will be coming to PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC, and PlayStation 4.

Joystiq - 3/5
The adventure's warm outcome remains worth pursuing despite these issues, which seem exacerbated in a game that doesn't bother with too much filler. There is a certain purity to admire in Contrast, spotted throughout its dream-like world and theatrically contrived platforming, but it's just a little too concise and a little too thin, like a fleeting shadow.

Gamespot 5/10
Many of Contrast’s individuals parts are beautiful, special, funny and even a little profound. Viewed as a whole though, with a little distance, the end result is confusing and difficult to look at. Contrast is rushed, messy, and, just like that, it’s done.

Polygon 4.5/10

There are collectibles throughout Contrast that shed a bit of light on the narrative, but the ultimate explanation of Dawn's existence is cursory and unrewarding. And despite a few strong moments, the game more often flounders in its efforts to mix substance and shadow into an enjoyable cocktail. The alchemy of Contrast doesn't quite pay off, and in the end, the game feels as insubstantial as the shadows that populate its world.
